Leaving summer isn’t all bad

Everyone pretty much loves fall. Maybe because the leaves change colors, temps drop, Halloween is just around the corner, it’s time to drag out the sweaters, time for kids to go back to school.

For me it’s the food! Then again for me it’s always the food. I love to eat. (I never did understand the protein drink thing. Where’s the crunch? But that’s another blog) Some people eat to live, and then there’s me who lives to eat!

Now that it’s September I’m already thinking apple pie. I love
pie! Pumpkin and pecan are my favs. I even learned to make that lattice top crust so my pie looks cute. ‘course it looks a lot cuter with a scoop of ice cream on top.

And then there’s the pot roast. Fall is so pot roast season. A chunk of beef surrounded by gravy and carrots and potatoes and peas and did I mention the gravy? And what is pot roast without popovers!

I finally bought a non-stick popover pan. Nothing better than bread that is all crusty on the outside and warm and hollow in the inside. Yummmm. And of course it has no calories because of the hollow part.

And then there’re root veggies. I gotta tell you I’m not a
veggie person but roasted turnips, rutabaga, carrots, parsnips, fennel are the best.

But the very best autumn food is doughnuts. Okay, I know you can eat doughnuts anytime but a doughnut with hot apple cider is amazing. A just out of the fryer doughnut and sitting around an open fire on a chilly night with hot cider and the stars overhead is what autumn is all about.

So what about you? Now that September is here what part of autumn are you looking forward to the most?

Happy Autumn!
Hugs, Duffy

I’ll give away two copies of Hot Southern Nights by Dianne Castell…the other me when I wrote romance. Please check back to see if you won. Thanks!

Hi, Dawn. I’m with you on fall but the winter part not so much and they say it’s going to be another doozie here in Cincy. Yikes!

I love the colors, but when they are just past peak...the bronzes, the golds, etc. Food any season! and this winter - sitting in front of the fireplace with a good book!

Fall is a favorite of mine followed by Spring. We love the colors and the pumpkins. My husband loves all the pumpkin items I decorate with this time of year.

Now Winter on the other hand you can keep. I do not like the cold one bit. And here in Jersey they say it is going to be a cold bad winter. I think I will be doing a lot of reading so I had better stock up on books to read!

It is early to say this but I hope everyone stays warm, prepares some good comfort food and huddles in.. (although I am hoping it will not be bad at all)

Hi Duffy! I am right with you on the fall foods, like soups and chili......I can't wait! But the beautiful colors of fall and the crisp temps are my absolute favorite as well as the fact that we will celebrate our 39th anniversary in October!

I love the fire too. The smell of burning wood and all nice and cozy when it’s cold outside.

Hi, Shawn. Yes, we’re supposed to have a bad winter here in Cincy too. So not looking forward to that. I love decorating with pumpkins.

Cooler temps and the smells. Everything smells so crisp and clean in the autumn. Winter too. LOL Maybe it's because I can take a deep breath in cooler temps.

I love a cool crisp Fall day with the wind blowing the leaves down the street.. Not cold but what I call, Sweater Weather. I love the beautiful colors of the trees here in New England and like to go for rides to see them.

I love Fall, too, Duffy. The colors, the cooling temps, the smell of Fall in the air. And of course, the food. Pumpkin pie is also a great Fall food. With vanilla ice cream. I like that better than whipped cream. Pecan pie is a family fave. So much so I gave character Pete my own Southern Pecan Pie recipe, so it's now Pete's Pecan Pie. :)

Hi, Lisa. Once the cooler temps hit it is easier to get around. Sometimes in the summer I feel like I’m swimming in the humidity.

Hi, Diane. I love sweater weather! My fav. And the colors are amazing as well. New England has the best autumns ever. Gorgeous! Lucky you.

Hi, Maggie. Yes to all things pumpkin. Love pumpkin pie. I have a pecan pie recipe too that I love. So darn easy and it always comes out. Pecan pie…the true crowd pleaser. LOL
