Dear Readers

by Leann

Let me say up front what this is about--a thank you with a giveaway! I have never done one on my own before. It's always been in combination with other writers. But I want to thank all of you who have been such loyal and enthusiastic readers of my Cats in Trouble series.

The first book, The Cat, The Quilt and The Corpse, was a challenge.
How do I get those cats on the page as often as possible? They are the co-stars, after all. The "cat-cam" in the books was designed so Jillian never had to be more than a small screen away from them. Some folks who reviewed on Amazon didn't like that. And one particular person commented that it was just a "bad book." S/he eventually went in and edited that part after a bit of outrage from others, but s/he also said I needed to "get my act together." And here I thought I did have my act together! Who knew?

No matter how many wonderful reviews a writer receives, it's those mean-spirited ones that really stay with us. Thank goodness, it doesn't bother me as much as it used to. I have no control over other people's opinions, after all. The thing is, I judged that reviewer by my standard--that I would never, ever say anything like that to a writer. It takes a long time to write a book, and rewrite it often more than once, and edit it and edit it again. Plus, I don't like to be nasty. Kindness matters. But it doesn't matter to everyone.

That's why it's so important to say thanks to all of you who stop by here and read my weekly blog and leave your often brilliant comments. And along with that, the comments are always kind and polite and caring. I also want to thank you for buying my book during the first week. Release week can make or break a book or a series. You've all helped me keep my job!

Since my inspiration was always Agatha Christie, I thought it fitting that my prize would be this darling Poirot necklace to one random blog reader in the US or Canada.
And if I know you read this blog all the time, your chances of winning are doubled--and yes I know you folks! If you have already bought my book, bless you. I would be happy to send you a signed bookplate. Leave your email in the comment section to be entered to win the necklace. If you'd like a bookplate, let me know that, too.

Thanks again, friends! You've made this another great release week!

I have read some rude - and just plain mean - reviews, and I've never understood how people can do that. It may seem trite, but I was taught "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all". I think it would be different if someone was making a comment in a way that was intended to be constructive. But to just be nasty is so wrong. I think those people must be very unhappy individuals. I have read some books that weren't what I expected and that I didn't particularly like - but that is personal taste. Just because I didn't care for it doesn't make it a bad book - just not my preference. In those instances, I just don't write a review.

Personally, I can't imagine what criticism the person could have had about the cat cam. I would love to have one. And I have read about GPS collars like the one Clyde had and I think they're awesome. Technology keeps moving forward and it's logical that someone who is in a tech business (like Tom) or involved in animal rescue (like Shawn) would use current technology.

I read my books on Kindle (or listen in audio), but I did buy a print copy of The Cat, The Wife, and The Weapon when it was part of the Read Humane promotion, and I would love to have a bookplate for that. You can contact me at PERSONAL_LST @ YAHOO.COM or message me on Facebook.

Pooh negative comments, especially those that are against the writer.

I've followed you from the beginning starting with the Yellow Rose series and I love this one as well. I can't wait to read this one and I would love a bookplate.

Dear Leann, I work in the local library and we can't keep enough of your books on hand. So many of the other workers have also read your books with great pleasure. I recommend them all the time to other quilters and Crazy Cat Ladies. There are NO other cozies quite like your series. Some people are sad haters of everything without a creative ability of their own. Change nothing about yourself or your writing to please them. They cannot and will not be appeased.Love, your dedicated fan.

The Cats in Trouble series is a lot of fun to read. I've only read the first book for the Yellow Rose series. But, I really enjoyed reading the first one and looking forward to continuing the series. I am currently reading The Cat, the Vagabond and the Victim, and enjoying every moment of it. Would love to enter the contest and also, a bookplate please.

Leann, I have read some of those mean and ugly reviews of books, and many times I follow the crumbs backward. I find that they are evidently either not actual names or they have never reviewed another book or the ugly reviews are all they write and they are against a certain publisher or author.

I do not write bad reviews. I have never written a book, but I know the work that must be involved. Would not want to be ugly to someone who has put so much effort into their writing. And just because I do not care for a story it does not mean it is not wonderful. Some people like chocolate but I prefer vanilla. Does not mean anyone is wrong, simply means we have different taste.

I once ran for public office and won with a big margin. That was a good thing, because I had planned to go door to door and ask each anti-me voter why they did not like me. I understand about not forgetting a bad review.

You write well, Leann, so just focus on the vanilla's and forget the chocolate. (Never believed I would say forget chocolate, lightening will strike at any moment.)

I do like this series. I did not use to be a lover of cats (allergic) but I love them now (albeit with a few sneezes). Thank you for continuing to entertain us.

I'm a new reader to your blog and your books. I came over when Duffy Brown joined your group and was happy to discover some authors I've never read. There is NEVER a time for rudeness. As you said, an author spends so much time writing a book that they hope will entertain and please the readers. Once those words are printed, the author has no control. But it's like sending out a piece of you and harsh words hurt. I appreciate the sacrifices an author makes to bring us their stories. You will never please everybody. Just keep doing what you are doing and know that for every one person who rudely shares their opinion, there are hundreds more that love reading your books. grandmabkr at yahoo dot com

Some people who are miserable in their own life hide behind a computer and try to make everyone as miserable as they are. I love your books. The plots and characters are very well thought out and keep you turning the page. You keep right on doing the awesome job that you do and don't let the trolls get to you. I would love to win the Poirot necklace. Thanks for the chance!

I LOVE both of your series, and even had security cameras installed so I can watch my kitties! Shobrock66@gmail.com is my email and I would be thrilled with a signed bookplate! 121 South East Street will bring it winging my way!
This is the best Cat story so far! If they don't like them quit reading them and put them in a Little Free Library for others to enjoy.
Your posts seem much more relaxed, now that you are moved into your new digs. I'll bet the kitties are happier too!

Leann, I have been reading your books since the first yellow rose mystery came out and I enjoy them all. I remember being so thrill at finding the cozy chick's web site as it had many of the writers I enjoy and some beautiful book marks to give away. I was like a child in a candy store. Some time ago, you had a give away of one autographed hard cover of one of your books at this site and I commented at that time. You, generously sent out copies of your books to all that participated that night and I was so thrilled! I want you to know that I gave that copy to one of my grand niece and it been read by many. Any give aways you have, I would love to win. Thank you for creatively bringing joy into my life. Nicole

Thanks so much Vicki. Is that Annie Bear in your picture? :-) Looks a lot like Clyde in the new book!! I may actually get my own cat cam because of Marlowe and his seizures. It would be nice to see if he needs more meds on the next dose or if I need to come home right away! Thanks for reading my books!

I retired in March (yay!) and now have the time to indulge myself in more reading, reading, reading and now following and commenting on the fun blogs I have discovered. Of course, now my TBR list is huge because I've discovered either so many new authors or books and series by some of my old favorites I didn't know existed. That's a good thing, though. And I enjoy reading the posts and reader/blogger/author comments. It feels like a community of friends - and people who understand why I just can't put that book down.

So as far as those negative comments, that is their problem if they can't find anything better to do than be nasty. When I write a review I try to be honest and not just use a cookie cutter formula of happy phrases, but if I didn't like the book why would I want to write a review and discourage other potential readers who might enjoy it? Seems some of these negative commenters think they are either the editor and you need their writing advice (constructive comments are another story), or they are saving the world from a book they think is bad. Whatever - don't let negative comments get you down!

I just discovered the Cat series so am catching up (one of those who has to start with #1 ;-), the newest one sounds so compelling I don't want to miss anything leading up to it) and am using The Cat, The Vagabond and the Victim postcard I got from you as a bookmark. I love all those goodies! The necklace is too cute. Who doesn't love Poirot? And a bookplate would be terrific.

Mean reviews can be really disheartening. There's bound to be someone out there that doesn't like something, and you can't make everyone happy. I for one, am very happy with the books. I've actually purchased and read all your kitty books, up to the kitty mill murder book (which is in progress) in less than a 2 week period. I have the vagabond on my bed side, awaiting it's turn. I needed some serious happiness after my last set of books, and you have done it. Crazy cat lady meets crafts? That's right up my alley! You have turned me on to the cozy mystery books, and it has now become one of my favorite genres. Thank you!

btw, I'd love to be entered: radioactiveindigo@gmail.com, or a book plate.

Thanks!

I always find it odd when I see bad reviews on fiction. I have left 2 truly bad reviews, and they were on "non-fiction". If they had said they were fiction, I would not have been so unhappy. Most fiction, especially cozies (and I particularly love cats included), are here to entertain. They make the reader feel warm. Your books have always been like a nice hot chocolate. I guess it is time I get on my backlog of reviews and put my positive spin forward...

I don't have the latest book but I have the first two and I'd like a bookplate. I love Poirot. PBS only aired two of them recently. There are three more movies (Elephants Can Remember, Curtain, and The Labors of Hercules) to end the series and apparently they will be online on Acorn T.V. In November the DVD comes out. I'm re-reading Elephants Can Remember. I read it years ago when I was a teenager and first started reading Agatha Christie. I try to visit this site often.

I am new to this blog but not new to you as an author. I found this blog through Kate Collins and Duffy Brown on Goodreads. I read lot of books and review them. I believe in being honest in all things and will review a book that I haven't enjoyed (though that rarely happens). However that does not mean that I am mean or aggressive, I certainly never use that space to cut away at someones talent or their confidence. And the people who do that are truly small. If you read a good reviewers blog they are honest and truthful in their words but never hurtful. Lashing out at an authors percieved flaws in either thier writing or personally just makes you out to be an internet troll. Reviews are meant to provide insight from the readers perspective to help other potential readers and to give the authors feedback. I am sorry to you for having to deal with that. You put yourself out there everytime you put out a new book and that takes courage and talent!

I dont wish to take part in the give away as I recently recieved the opportunity to recieve one of Duffy Brown's out of print books from this site. In the interest of fairness I would want some one else to get the excitment of a new book from a favorite author.

Leann Sweeney said...

Thanks so much, Lindsay. Being honest is perfect. I am no stranger to criticism--ask my editor and my critique group!!--and you're right, that's not what I was talking about. "This is just a bad book" is not review quality criticism and says more about the reviewer than the review itself. It doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

I love to review authors books. I won't give a bad review, if I didn't like it I won't review it. Why turn someone away from a book they might thoroughly enjoy. There are some very cruel people in the world who just don't think about anyone but 'self' and in turn hurts others. Blessings, Janet
