OSCARS: Why Do You Watch?

by Kate Collins

I'm watching the Academy Awards as I write this, trying to think of some witty repartee with which to engage you, but all I can think of is:

1. Why did that person choose that particular dress?

2. Also the hairstyle?

3. Ditto the heels?

4. Huh. So that's what the actor looks like without stage makeup.

5. Was Harrison Ford on something?

6. What does everyone do when they cut to commercials?

7. Do we really care who wins or do we just want to see the dresses?

What would you add to the list? What do you agree with?

I like the red carpet part for the interviews and to see the dresses. I thought the pizza order was a bit odd.

The answer to the first three questions is usually "the stylist chose it".

It's more about the dresses with me, although it's also becoming about guessing who overdid it on the plastic surgery, Botox, and fillers. Yikes.

The pizza bit was a massive waste of time in an already long evening, I thought. It was kind of embarrassing.

Me, too, Shirley. Not funny.

Okay, so about your guesses……. Who overdid it?

I have to confess, I missed the Oscars this year, but I'm intrigued by the "pizza" story and will have to look it up. And Harrison Ford, hmmm, have to google that and see what he was up to. (or on.) Great post!

Kate Hudson, John Travolta, Liza Minelli, and that poor Kim Novak. Yikes.

I didn't watch either. Loved the selfie that Bradley Cooper took. That was cute. But yeah the last time I watched it, Braveheart won Best Picture. :)

For me, I felt so bad for Sydney Portier. It appears he has had a major stroke; he couldn't even read the winner's name, the poor man. I was in tears. And yes, Harrison Ford appeared to be "under the weather, or under the influence" to me. Kim Novak was almost unrecognizable. Why oh why can't they just age "gracefully" like us ordinary people? And Goldie Hawn looked a bit surgically impaired even though she did look nice. She can't look like her daughter Kate no matter what she does, so just go with the flow and be yourself, is my feeling. But they are public personalities and feel they HAVE to look a certain way, which as we all know, doesn't exactly go the way they had planned from the looks of the various surgeries.

As much as I can normally take Ellen on her show, I still don't think some of the "antics" that they did on the Oscars is fun or funny. But that could be just my feeling, but since others mentioned her serving pizza to the first few rows, I guess it didn't sit well with others either.

I did not know who the singer was who had on the red dress and sat on steps with a guy playing to her side. I don't know that song either, but I thought it was terrible. Maybe that is how it is supposed to sound, I have no idea, but it sure didn't sound right to me. She may be a great singer in another location, but it didn't seem to be a good fit for the Oscars and that big stage. (I am older than most of you and so not up to date with current singers so please forgive my lack of knowledge on current singers and music :))

Not to mention Goldie Hawn.

I agree. And I was a trained singer for many years. That first girl in the red dress sitting on steps slipped "into the cracks" as we singers used to say. She was flat, not once, but several times. Whoever put her there with just a guitarist made a big mistake. I'll assume she normally sings much better, so that setting really did her a disservice.

I haven't watched it for ages, I don't watch many movies either. But I did laugh about the selfie with Grumpy Cat :) that is the only one I saw posted on Facebook.

You could tell that Liza Minelli didn't like Ellen's joke about her.

I was disappointed in some of Ellen's jokes. That was one of them.

You sure hit the nail on the head with Kim Novak. I left the room and when I walked back in, she was on stage. It took me awhile to figure out who she was. She looked like a muppet. Not too many actresses choose to age gracefully.

That was based on another of Ellen's attempts to be funny -- take a selfie with major stars. Apparently, they overwhelmed Twitter and it crashed. I guess that was the goal. Yay?

Popularity doesn't always indicate great talent, sadly. Maggie, you were a singer? You've just got all kinds of talent, girl.

I don't even remember when Braveheart came out. That was indeed a long time ago, Krista. But all we really need to do is watch the morning shows to get all the highlights anyway.

The pizza story is getting a lot more attention than it's worth, trust me. Ellen ordered pizza and passed it out to big stars in the first few rows. It was supposed to be funny, I guess.

Kate Hudson, too? Wow.

I'm actually not a big Ellen fan. Her jokes often seem to be a bit too forced and flat to me. I think the last time I watched the Oscars was when Titanic was up for so many awards. In listening to the recap on the radio this morning, I feel sorry for Kim Novak and Sidney Poitier.
