Chocolate, wine and books: oh boy!

It was like a first date. For the first time in my fairly long life, I have joined a book club.

Apparently I have passed the ‘vetting’ process by a group of women who’ve been together for a long time, reading books they might not otherwise read.  I’ve known most of them for years. Several are booksellers, others editors, and, with me, there will be two authors (The lovely Erika Chase is the other one). All are voracious readers and they all know really  how to laugh. They have two rules: you must like wine and you must love chocolate. I’m good with all that.

As I said,  I’ve always wanted to be part of a book club, but my schedule has been haphazard. Plus (and don’t tell anyone I said this) I never want to read something that I HAVE to. However, all that wine, chocolate and friendship is quite seductive. All to say, I am glad I passed that secret screening process and just in time for Tuesday's meeting: the annual Christmas extravaganza. Our hostess, Ulla, provides a sit-down dinner with three desserts in her beautiful home. I was sure glad I'd dropped all those hints. Especially when I learned that the rest of us are not expected to provide a sit-down extravaganza when our turn comes.

I knew I was going to love this group. I knew about their meetings (have I mentioned wine and chocolate?). That’s because two years ago, they gave me an amazingly warm welcome as a guest author at one of their meetings. That meant they liked and respected mysteries. Ever since then, I’ve had my fingers crossed that I’d be back to be one of the group.

Women who love books -- old friends and new: what more could a girl want for Christmas?

Do you love discussing books with friends in person or online or …?
Let’s hear about it!

Shel, you''re such an avid reader with a great sense of humor. You'd be a great asset to any book club! Wish you lived nearby. I'd help out by eating your chocolate and drinking your wine.

MJ -- You are quite correct, our screening process is rigorous, and may also involve wine & chocolate. But you seem to have received a passing grade & got your rule book with the secret handshake. As a group, we have been together for many years, as some people's children who are now driving, did not exist when we began the group. We have fun choosing & reading books, getting together & eating chocolate & drinking wine, and laughing a lot, but most of all, we value the friendship & unquestioning support that we have forged between us, getting us through all sorts of personal and health crises large & small. It is good to have strong women out there who have your back. Welcome aboard, MJ.

Thanks, Mary! So glad to see you here. XO

Wish you were in the neighborhood, Leann!

Thanks, Cathy! I am really hoping all the blackmail pix are destroyed.

There was never any doubt you'd be 'accepted', MJ. Who wouldn't want you in their book club! You do, after all, fit all the requirements -- love chocolate, wine & books. And, you're a lively addition. So, welcome. I just hope all book clubs are as cozy a place to be as ours is.

Thanks, Erika/Linda. I can stop being jealous now! It is good to have you there as an accomplice or I guess I'm the accomplice.

Have fun at your bookclub MJ! I have become a book blogger to be able to talk with friends on the internet about the books we read. It is much harder to find someone in real life to do that with.

I've been wanting to join a book club in a while. This definitely pushes me to go for it. You ladies look so content and spirited... xoxo -S.

It's great that you do that, Aurian. I know you are part of many lovely discussions and commentaries in addition to your blog. That's fun too!.

Glad to be in your Internet book world!

Thanks, Sonia. I hope you find a great group to meet with! There are lots of book clubs in our community, some are more welcoming than others. So I'm lucky and I know you will be too.

Happy reading,

How weird is this that I have few friends in my immediate area who reads. I use to belong to an online book club, but when it came time to discuss the book, one or two never came to the group. That's okay, which is why I love going to Malice and Bouchercon.
