An Adventure in Winter Wear

by Deb Baker/Hannah Reed

GUESS WHAT'S HAPPENING WITH MY PHONE

No, that is not a burglar stealing it.

That's me, showing off my new gloves.

I'm really not much of a shopper, but this year I went out to buy new winter outer wear. Scarf, headband, two pairs of gloves. These little knit ones and a more substantial pair for when it gets really cold.

It seems that technology and fashion have once again passed by when I wasn't looking.

For example, can someone explain why my scarf is round instead of having two ends. Are you laughing? You are! Am I supposed to twist it over my head like a rubber band?

If you've addressed this in the comments, thank you.

But this is the really cool new feature in winter wear for those of you who are as clueless as I am. My gloves work with a touch screen! Remember how we had to pull off our glove to answer our phones? No more. And they come in every price range, from the finest leather right down to the knits like these. In fact, I found a pair on Amazon for $1.99!

Makes me wonder what else I've been missing.

Infinity scarves (the round ones) seem to be the latest thing. I only have (and wear) two winter scarves. One is my prized purple one that Heather Webber made for me, and one is a purple and turquoise one that a friend made with yarn that I bought. So the infinity scarves can just stay on the racks. I do, however, ALWAYS need more gloves. I had four pair at the end of last winter. Now I'm down to my one good leather pair and my combination glove/mittens that are knit. Time for more cheap knit gloves...

I have fingerless mittens that I wear. I can answer my phone very easily with them. When I am walking and I first start out and I am chilly, I curl my fingers up inside the mittens and then when I get warmer I can put my fingers out and cool off. I love them! They went missing for a few weeks last spring when someone mistakenly took my jacket instead of hers at church one day. I missed those mittens so much and I was so happy when I got them and my jacket back!

Our oldest daughter lives in Denver, and last year we found a pair of the fingerless mittens at Mast General Store. She can pop the top and use her gadgets. She loves them. I think I will have to indulge in a pair this year.

So that's what they are called. When I bot it, it was looped through a plastic ring. I didn't know it was round until I got home and snipped off the ring. Surprise! But I love the pattern and will figure it out.

Elaine and Jeannie, I love those pop ups too, but, really, try the touch screen ones. You'll like them.

I still have the scarf my late grandmother knitted for me 30 years ago. And I always use it, and don't think it will ever be replaced, though I do have a very soft fleece one ...
As long as the gloves keep my hands warm and not sweaty, I will love them.

I am knitting my sister a pair of ipod gloves. The yarn is merino and cashmere.

I'm indulging in the sin of pride since I bought a new winter coat a few weeks ago. I hadn't had a new one in years. This one has a faux fur lining in the coat and hood, and a washable leather-like outer layer. It's so warm and comfortable, I'm in love with it. My hands get really cold so I wear ski gloves and I have a double knit scarf that is very handy. I've been a fashion failure all my life - partly because I'm a Scrooge when it comes to shopping. :)
