Color My World

By Heather

One of the best things--and most anxiety-filled--about moving to the new house is making it our own. Choosing new furniture, where to hang beloved pictures, and what color to paint the rooms. It's a lot of decisions (some pricey ones, too), and we worry if we're making the right choices.

Currently it's paint giving me palpitations. Our paint decision making consists of bringing a ton of swatches home and taping them to the walls. It works better than you might think.

This week I had to choose a color for my office. My office at the old house was yellow, and I was ready for a change. I brought home a couple of paint swatches and fell in love with "Plum Smoke." It's a deep grayish purple. But it was darker than I thought I wanted, so I kept trying to steer myself toward the spring greens. Yet I always went back to that purple. So I decided to give it a go.

Yes, it's a dark shade, but I absolutely love it and couldn't be happier with the decision. It's a color that speaks to me, and in a room where I need to be super creative, speaking to me is a good thing.

So, here's my office at the beginning of this week:

Yikes!

And here it is now, all purplish. And organized (thank goodness!).

Soon there will be shelves in that cubby to the right of the cabinet.

As you can see, there are still no pictures on the wall (or electrical covers--ha!). I have so many pics that I'm having trouble deciding which to hang where... Baby steps, right?

Remember to, there's no rush really. You can take your time and decide. Your office looks awesome and I agree the color is amazing!

It is a nice color, perhaps a bit dark for my tastes, but you could always paint one wall a bit lighter for contrast if it is too dark in winter. I am surprised your desk is so small though, but since you write such great books, I supposed it is the right size :)
I wish you lots of joy in your office, and my the muse never leave you.

Thanks! Taking time is a double-edged sword. It's totally the right thing to do, but the Type A in me wants everything done, done, done!

It is definitely darker in there, but it's soothing. I write on a mini laptop, so I don't need much space at all. :)

I love the color! You chose right. In this place where we are living temporarily, the walls are a Gulden's mustard yellow--which is the exact same color as my old office at the school. It does NOT lend itself to creativity. I think it might be making me sick!! LOL. I am looking forward to picking out paint! I have a craft room in the new place it will be different than any other room--just like your gorgeous office! Congrats!

I really like the wall color. I am thinking that if the pictures you choose to hang in there bring a pop of color that will warm it up. I love the small window seat. I hope that you find some time this holiday weekend to just kick back and celebrate the fact that you are in your new home.

Love it! I've done every wall color imaginable I think. I've had a red dining room with white trim, a red family room, dark blue walls in our NYC apartment, a whole dining room/living room done in cofffee-with-cream color. A yellow family room. I say go for what pleases you!

That's my favorite color! I want to paint my office that color. Where it you get the paint at?

Purple is the color of creativity. So, it is the perfect color for your writing room. I like to think outside the box with color. I have a tuscan gold with white trim living room. A Cherokee Red kitchen and dining room and my master bath is a Savannah Spanish Moss green. Have fun decorating your new home!

I love the color! I'm a big fan of purple. If "Plum Smoke" makes you smile and connects with the inner you, then that's definitely the color you needed to be surrounded by in your work space. Nice office!

We had a dull white living and dining room once with lots of sunlight coming in. It was blinding. We painted the walls dark blue and our furniture was all light colored so we loved it. Then my husband got transferred to another state and we had to sell our house. The real estate woman nearly had a heart attack when she saw our color and insisted we paint it all white. What a chore!!!

Thanks! Baby Girl is home, so we've been watching a movie marathon. Lots of relaxing. :)

Peg, thanks! I feel like I've been through the rainbow, too. I've gone a lot more neutral as I've gotten older, though.

I got it at Home Depot -- it's a Behr color, "Plum Smoke." Really pretty!

what kind of view do you have outside your window?

I love the color and what you did to your office. Nice job.

Perfect color for your office. It looks calm, soothing and creative. Similar to what I want to do in one of my spare bedrooms. Purple is supposed to be a good creativity color.
