Did Your Favorite Show Get Cancelled?

by Leann

Season finales are all but over (except for The Voice) and the list of shows that didn't make it have been released. Usually, I'm fine with something I have no control over and it's no big deal, but one cancellation bothered me. Body of Proof.

I admit I am a crime show junkie, but this cancellation bothered me because the heroine wasn't all that "likeable." She was a medical examiner and very flawed--but strong and always seeking the truth. Female characters like that just don't seem to do well on network TV. The Closer--another of my favorite programs that is gone--also had a complex female lead and did very well. But that was cable, not ABC. Seems like games shows, bachelors and night time soap opera fare is what does well on that network.

I do know that I am leaning more toward cable for shows that are "must see TV" for me. Royal Pains, Suits, Covert Affairs, Rizzoli and Isles, Perception--cannot wait for those seasons to start. And one of my favorites will be back this Monday--The Glades on A&E. Now that's a charming hero--and not bad to look at, either. :-)

What about you? Are you bothered by a cancellation for this past TV season? Do you feel like the networks only look for programs that appeal to an age demographic you do NOT fit into? (Like moi!!)

I, too, loved Body of Proof! I am really sad to find out it was cancelled. Now we'll never know if her Dad killed himself!!! Geez, it was such a great show with humor and mystery.

I lost a couple of shows - CSI: NY, Vegas and Touch. I was really upset over CSI: NY I love Gary Sinese.

For the summer it's the USA and TNT shows, plus True Blood.

ACK! Wait...CSI: NY is gone? Well, at least I didn't kill it. I haven't really watched since they changed the day it was on, but dang. I'll miss Danny Messer. At least we have re-runs. I never saw Body of Proof--mostly because of my ABC boycott that I'm actually sticking to. But it was one of my mom's favorites. I think the rest of my shows survived the axe this time.

I loved Body of Proof and Vegas. Can't believe they were cancelled while some of the stupidest shows on TV remain.

BUH!! Body of Proof and CSI NY cancelled??!! A few of the shows, that I actually enjoyed.... guess there will be more reading time, as a lo of the never shows just doesn't do it for me

Yes, Yes and Yes. I'm going to miss Body of Proof. I hate when they make decisions based on demographics and numbers.

Except for David Spade, I enjoyed Rules of Engagement and they kept moving that show around and will miss it.

I'm definitely going to miss Burn Notice, since this is their last season.

I'll miss Body of Proof too. I didn't get to watch it often due to it's time. I won't watch reality shows so there is not much on TV that I watch anymore. I like to watch Castle too but find it's 10 pm time slot not the best time for me. I see about 5 minutes and fall asleep! Luckily cable has reruns in a decent time slot and I can watch it there. Wish they would run them in order though. I see a lot more watching of DVD's and reading books in my future if TV keeps going the way it has.

There is one last episode and I think we find out. Just wish it wasn't ONE LAST EPISODE. :-(

I have watched every episode of CSI;NY. It was my favorite of the franchise and Gary Sinese is wonderful.

Leann Sweeney said...

I agree, Nancy!

Burn Notice was a must see for us because it is one of my husband's favorites--and he doesn't watch all that much TV. I hope they don't kill off the characters!!

I didn't know it was cancelled - very upsetting! I love that show! I'm also upset they cancelled "666 Park Avenue." And I still haven't gotten over the cancellation of "The #1 Ladies Detective Agency." It was such a great series!

I watched a movie last night for the first time in a while. I should do that more often. Then I turned to a book and promptly fell asleep! Moving from the Central time zone to Eastern has been quite the adjustment. I used to go to bed at 10 PM every night for many many years. Now, if I go to bed at 10 (which is 9 PM Central), I tend to awaken several times in the night. My body wants me to stay up later!!

I know! And yet "Wipeout" keeps coming back. Dumbest show ever.

They cancelled "Go On" on NBC with Matthew Perry. I watched it every week! So sad. :/

Leann Sweeney said...

I know! I love Matthew Perry and his special brand of humor. It was one of the few comedies I liked! :-(

Leann Sweeney said...

I liked Danny. We'll probably see these actors on other shows but it will be hard to "see" them as different characters.

Leann Sweeney said...

Yes, more reading. But last night I promptly fell asleep as soon as I started. I hate when that happens!!

Leann Sweeney said...

:-( Not a smart move, I think. It actually had pretty decent ratings but maybe not in that 18-49 demographic they want.

When?????

I am upset about CSI NY and Body of Proof too. The finale of Law & Order SVU left us with an exciting cliffhanger, as did Grey's Anatomy. I am glad both of those are coming back.

Kaye said...

Love The Glades - so glad that's coming back. GOt hooked on Longmire last year and happy to see that's on tomorrow (right after Glades). Burn Notice got to be too repetitive so that's not on the schedule this summer but Definitely watching Royal Pains, Covert Affairs, White Collar and Rizzoli and Isles. We liked Body of Proof too.

Leann Sweeney said...

I will miss both of my shows! :-( I think they are moving the original CSI to CSI:NY's spot and I'm betting it's the last season.

Leann Sweeney said...

I got hooked on Longmire, too, and my husband enjoys the sort of modern day Western atmosphere.

Debbie said...

I have a feeling it's partly the fault of the CSI and Law & Order franchises that many people are tired of crime shows. Three of each plus all the reruns on TNT, USA and elsewhere was just overload. I never got into Body of Proof because it was past my bedtime, but I did like Gary Sinese in CSI: NY.

At least Elementary and The Following were renewed and Perception is starting again soon. And Motive has possibilities. There will always be crime shows on television. Maybe just not so many of the same flavor.

Now if the public would just get sick of the not-really-reality shows.

Leann Sweeney said...

How I wish they would get rid of the reality shows. I love The Voice and that's about all.

Sue said...

I, too, am going to miss Body of Proof --- and Vegas. But I'm looking forward to Longmire and Glades---those are two of my favorites and they start tomorrow.
We won't even turn on a reality show---can't stand them.

Leann Sweeney said...

I know! Cannot wait for new scripted shows. No reality junk. I have never seen an episode of Honey Boo Boo and don't even want to come across it should I be changing channels!! :-) But HGTV is a different story--especially while building a house!

Lady Vyvian said...

I totally agree about Body of Proof, I really liked that show. I also agree about the summer shows on cable. Can't wait for Monday night to see The Glades and I also like Longmire that follows it. You mentioned The Closer, Kira Sedgewick felt it was time to end the program. I also like Royal Pains, Rizzoli and Isles, and Perception. There are a couple of new shows coming on I am looking forward to, as well.

Leann Sweeney said...

Sounds like we have the same TV taste! I was very bothered when The Closer ended, but Kira's hubby Kevin Bacon has a now hit show and I heard her do an interview where she said they take turns parenting and do not like to both be working long hours as their kids grow up. So now, it's his turn! I like her more for saying that and it took the sting out of her walking away. She probably knew he was going to have a hit show.

Sandi Lewis said...

Yes, I am bothered that network TV skews toward the demographic that I'm not. And many of these network shows that go on are not funny, or in the case of a drama are very poor. Like you, I look forward to the cable shows, especially in the summer. I would get rid of TV altogether if I didn't have the cable shows to look forward to!
Sandi

I believe the networks will lose more and more viewers if they keep relying on an old formula--especially in this day of the DVR.

Sandi Lewis said...

As well as so many of these reality shows. Yuck!

What bothers me the most is that the major networks are putting on shows that cater to the lowest common denominator. Which is why all the good shows get cancelled. Reality, Bachelors and Batchelorettes are cheap and easy to produce. It's like the slaves vs the lions back in ancient Rome.. the people loved it.

My partner and I have settled on a selection of Public TV stations and CBS (2 nights a week). On CBS we watch CSI, NCIS, NCIS LA, and Sherlock. We skip the mindless comedies on that station and read a good book instead.

Leann Sweeney said...

Totally agree. Lowest common denominator is right. Celebrity Apprentice? Really? PBS Mysteries are coming back with Inspector Lewis next week and I am really looking forward to it.

Lisa DuVal said...

I liked that show, tired of the crappy reality tv.

Leann Sweeney said...

Same here, Lisa!

I am very upset that Body of Proof is being cancelled! Dana Delaney did a great job! I loved her character. Another one of those stupid reality shows will probably take that time slot!

Leann Sweeney said...

She did. There is very little that makes me tune into ABC anymore. And it looks like that will be the norm. Sigh.

I was sorry to see Body of Proof cancelled too. I read that a lot of the questions are to be answered in the last show. I believe it's the age group. The other show I loved that was cancelled too was Harry's Law. I do love the show Rizzoli and Isles and looking forward to watching the new season starting soon.

Leann Sweeney said...

Very much looking forward to see if Megan gets her answers in tomorrow's finale. Rizzoli and Isles comes back soon! YAY!

Brittney said...

Just catching up on your posts after the long weekend but I just have post how upset I am that this is the last season of Burn Notice. I am a devout fan of the USA channel. My husband and I pretty much only watch their shows. I've watched Burn Notice since the beginning and hate that it is being cancelled :( But I will have Covert Affairs, Royal Pains, Suits ect... I do also watch Rizzoli and Isles but my husband hasn't gotten hooked on it.

Leann Sweeney said...

I'll miss it too Brittney. But I don't think it was cancelled. I think they decided it was time to end it. They did blow up a LOT of stuff!! :-)

JackieW said...

I am really upset that they canceled Vegas and just when Dennis Quaid was improving on his acting each week. My favorite show is Suits and would really be in the dumps if they didn't have it again. Seems like when they have a popular show that is going well they shut it off. I really liked Kathy Bates show too and signed petitions to get them to keep it running but to no avail.

Leann Sweeney said...

I agree, Jackie. They need to allow shows that appeal not only to the youngest viewers but give those that appeal to a different audience time to "catch on."

Peter Walravens said...

They cancelled "Zero Hour" after only a few episodes, because it didn't get high enough ratings. Duh!! If you air it at an inconveniant time, when there is an other popular show on an other chanel...

Leann Sweeney said...

I have no idea why they don't give these shows a fighting chance. They bought it, they produced it and then wham, it's gone before people even know the show existed. I could never work in Hollywood! I'd be so frustrated!! :-)
