Such A Slouch

A little over a week ago, as I hunched over my laptop, I decided that I really needed to work on my posture. It’s bad.

So bad.

I pretty much slouch all the time. If I’m vertical, I’m slouching. It’s a natural, comfortable position for me. But since I really don’t want to end up like the Hunchback, it was time to put the effort into pulling my shoulders back and standing up straight.

A few days after I started this little self-improvement project, I woke up unable to turn my head to the left. A day of Advil and heat treatments relieved the pain, but I racked my brain trying to figure out why I had this problem—there had been no injury, no sudden twisting. Nothing. Nada.

Except my new posture project...

Now, I’m not 100 percent sure the two are linked, but I’m suspicious. Very suspicious.

Luckily, the neck problem hasn’t returned. And a week and a half into my project I can’t say that I never slouch any more, but I am getting better at catching myself when I do, and hopefully soon I’ll won’t be doing it at all. My spine, someday, will thank me.

How about you? Do you have good posture? Or are you a sloucher like me?

I like to recline, lying half in my chair or couch. But when at work at the office, I do sit straight.

I am bad at my posture. I am trying to get better and most days it works. It is something I have to constantly work on.

Since I have a sit down job too I have to be very aware of my posture too. I have a tendency to slouch and when I notice and straighten up I notice how much more comfortable I am. But then I get busy and before I know it I am slouching again. Glad your pain is gone. Cannot wait for the new book!

Aurian, I like to recline, too. Especially when I'm writing. Bad habits!

Krista, it's harder than it seems, isn't it?

Lori, I do better when I'm at writing events, but everyday life I'm awful! LOL. But getting better...

I have to sit straight or I get bad neck and shoulder pain. What helps me is, midway through my writing afternoon, I get up and do yoga stretches. All I know is that it works. My posture has improved greatly. If you've never taken a yoga class, a good DVD will work.

I'm a sloucher. I don't really even think about it much, but when I started to read your post today I was slouching! Now I'm sitting up straight. Can't say how long that will last, but I should work on it too.

I honestly never noticed until you brought it to my attention...thanks btw...
Yep, I'm a sloucher. I guess I never really noticed either. But I'm not going to try your experiment. I'm a baby when it comes to pain....

I'm a sloucher - I go through periods of trying to sit and walk with by shoulders back and my head held high, but I get engrossed in something a the next thing I know I'm slouching again. It probably would be good for my back if I could keep the posture straight permanently - I'll have to really work on that

Kate, I keep thinking I should try yoga--maybe this will push me toward it. When I was doing pilates regularly (long ago) my posture was much better.

Linda, we should start a club! Or a support group or something. There are a lot of us here who want to work on this.

LOL, Tonya. We can keep each other in check when we meet.

Kathleen, I'm the same way. If I lose focus for even a second, I'm slouching again.

I'm a sloucher and I always correct myself just as I'm about to get up.
