The Power of Flowers

by Deb Baker/Hannah Reed

Last weekend I went over to pick up my best friend for a fun trip to the garden center. She opened the door snarly - not directed at me, just one of those mornings when the dogs, kids, husband weren't cooperating and she'd lost patience.

And, she said, "I'm not in the mood to buy flowers. But I'll come." Grudgingly. Cuz I said I would.

Then we walked into the center, one of those enormous outdoor festivals of brilliant color, outbuildings filled with geraniums, the more delicate herbs, annuals like you've never seen before.

Within five minutes, maybe less, my friend had on a smile as brilliant as any rose.

Flowers have incredible power to lift our spirits, make the sun shine, improve our emotional health. With an immediate happy impact.

What about you? Do flowers have power over you?

I wish I could say yes, but umm...no. I do love calla lilies and roses, but honestly, they don't really do anything for my mood. Now, if a guy sent them to me, that would be a whole different story. LOL!

All those bright colours and lovely petals always make me happy. Even on a cloudy or rainy day just looking at a flower makes me smile and rejoice in the miracle that is life.

Yes, I love watching bright colored flowers! My bf and I are going to a garden center tomorrow to pick some new ones for our tiny tiny balconees/gardens.

A garden nursery is one of my favorite places on earth.

I love planting flowers. I love to watch them sprout and grow. The colors do lift my mood.

Yes, Yes, Yes. Flowers alway make me feel better. I am not fond of roses from the florist, but that's a differnt tale. Give me tulips, daisies, dandelions I am a happy girl. My mother always said "digging in the dirt, helped her spirits". For me too.

Going to a local nursery on July 4 has become a tradition for a friend of mine and me. We wander all the row and aisles and sit in their "misting" room if it's a hot one. The affect is miraculous: we're both at ease and at peace and we laugh and linger. We both have somewhat stressful jobs so really look forward to this little event. And we always end of spending money we really don't have because everything is just so darn pretty!

I do about 10 pots every year so I can try different combinations. Plus I get to go to different nurseries. I get so much satisfaction looking at those pots when I come home each.

I can spend hours at a garden center. It's so therapeutic. One day I hope to have my own lush garden that I can relax in.
