Today is National Pet Day

By Deb Baker/Hannah Reed

Here in the U.S.A., today is National Pet Day. We sure do love our animal friends. Look at me for example, I’m a member of the Humane Society – nationally and locally. It’s our largest animal protection organization. I’ve also been known to make secret contributions to, dare I say it…I’ll whisper…peta! Sure, they are extremists, sometimes going overboard, but they do some hard work in difficult and sad situations.

I’ve also found another cool volunteer group called the Animal Miracle Foundation, which connects animal lovers, shelters, and rescues to find homes for orphans. They jumped in to save lives during Katrina.

If you are thinking of adding a new family member, please consider adoption through a reputable organization. And if you already have a special pet, take a moment to give thanks and to hand out tasty treats.

And treat yourself to a new sticky roller because you deserve it.

I give thanks for all of my pets-Sam (my rescued dog), Seneca, Aleister, Calumet (2 former stray kittens and 1 former barn kitten), Tyskie, Grodziskie, Zywiec, Okocim (my pet rats), and Harley (my Off Track Thoroughbred). I support some local rescues, as well as a few national ones...I only wish I was rich and could do more.

My good cause is "Natuurmonumenten" They take care of nature, and the wild animals and plants in it. Trying to make the "old ones" come back and such.

My animals are 1 parrot and 1 canary. I used to have more, but due to my allergies for everything furry that is no longer an option.

All my kitties are rescues, mostly from the neighborhood. A couple were left behind when their owners moved. I even have a Katrina kitty my vet took in. I took him in trade from my vet when she agreed to put up for adoption 2 kittens I rescued.

I have supported a couple local charities who help ferals, one group who feeds/helps alley animals in Baltimore and one Washington, DC group.

Katreader, I had to grin at your pet rats. Not sure I've ever seen that although I've heard of them as pets.

Aurian, I checked out Natuurmonumenten and think its a fine organization :) I had a cockatiel once but it was so noisy it almost drove me nuts.

Shirley, you are walking the walk!

now the hard part - getting these letters right for my comment
