Picking Pet Names

The Cozy Chicks are big animal lovers, and it shows up in our writing. In Plan Bee (which came out yesterday), Story Fischer dates a cop who has a K-9 partner named Ben. I love that dog, and can't imagine 'tales' without him.

I know finding the perfect name for a new pet can be just as difficult as naming a newborn baby. But to make the process easier, here is a list of the most popular dog names in 2011 according to this poll:

  1. Bella
  2. Max
  3. Buddy
  4. Daisy
  5. Bailey
  6. Lucy
  7. Molly
  8. Coco
  9. Charlie
  10. Rocky
 And for cats:
  1. Kitty
  2. Tiger
  3. Bella
  4. Kitten
  5. Smokey
  6. Max
  7. Tigger
  8. Shadow
  9. Chloe
  10. Lucy

So what is the name of your favorite four-legged friend?

Our much loved Lab/Dalmatian mix was named Miss Demeanor (Missy). Lost her last year to cancer. We have a black tortoiseshell tabby named Miss Cleo The Psychic Kitty.

We have two mini schnauzers Pepper (because she's salt & pepper colored) and Hannity (she got that name because we watched a lot of Sean Hannity at the time.) Since then I've progressed in my career as a school librarian and so pets now tend to be named after children's book characters. In addition to the pups, we have a cat named Olivia (for Ian Falconer's adorable pig character - though the cat refuses to acknowledge that is her name), a hedgehog named Ramona and a library beta fish named Percy Jackson. We are not quite a zoo, but we're working on i.

Sampson (Sam) who I featured in Dying To Sell, Carl, in the Kelly Flynn books, also mentioned Border Collie mix Katy. My youngest dog Max, Blue Tick Coon Hound hasn't appeared yet.

Our black cat we saved from a shelter 4 years ago is named Ben/Benjamin. The shelter named him Ben and we actually really liked it. Early in 2011 we got a 2 month old kitten and named him Jerry (Ben and Jerry :) ) Unfortunately he had a unknown heart condition and passed away when he was neutered. Broke our hearts. We just saved another kitten from the same shelter as a Christmas present for our 3 year old. Since she was a holiday surprise we named her Eve (Evie).

Our three dogs are Romeo, Juliet, and Melody!

I love the creativity of these names. Keep them coming. Coco is on the list (#8). Growing up, we had a miniature Dachshund named Coco.

We have five feral cats who semi-live here or in the barn across the road. They are Scaredy Cat (the mother), Molly, Buster, Miss Emily, and Cookie. I used to have two Great Danes named Duke and Duchess, not very original but I didn't name them.

At the moment I have 11 furkids-someof them had names when I adopted them and I liked them so I have Harley (horse), Sam (dog), and Wallace (rat). I've named all the cats-Seneca, Aleister (after Aleister Crowley-he's all black), and Calumet (after the racing stable-she was born in my horse's barn). My other rats are Harrison (after George) and the Polish Beer Boys-Tyskie, Grodziskie, Okocim, and Zywiec. Some of my Rainbow Bridge animals include Barrett (after Syd Barrett), Brioche (her fur was the color of the bread), Kokishin (he was very curious) and Bandit...and many others.

The rescue named our basset Homer and that seemed the perfect name for a country dog.

Our dogs: Sheba & Baily

Our cats: Bandit, Dusti, & Shady

I think Baily is the only name on the list.

I once had a tiny mixed breed dog named "Podunk" & have had cats named "Lady Jane Grey" (silver Persian), "Zonker" (a black & white with a very quirky personality), & "Tinker" (a Morris lookalike). No pets now because of dander allergies, unfortunately. :-(

Our dog, a Corgi, is named Duffy. Our ragdoll cat is Katy. I also have two Quarter horses, Frostie (registered name One Zip in Time) and her son Snoopy (My Flashy Investment). All of my animals, like yours I'm sure, are characters, but Snoopy has his own blog, http://thatsmysnoopy.blogspot.com.

My two 3 year old cats now are Kayla (after Kayla on Days of our Lives which I haven't watched in over 7 years) and Juliet (I just liked the name).

Previous cat is Jensen (who we put to sleep at 18 in October - he was named after the Jenson brothers who won the doubles French Open many years ago.

My favorite cat of all was Olivia named after Olivia Newton John who passed away unexpectedly 3 years ago at age 10.

Before that we had cats named Teddy, Tabitha, Pocahontas, Cinnamon and Snowball.

What happens when you let your husband name your cats - you end up with them named after R&B singers. We have Ike, Tina, Marvin and Smokey.

We also have two boxers named Roxy and Boone. Both were adopted from boxer rescue. Roxy was an owner surrender and we just kept her name. Boone came from the local shelter via the rescue group and we got to name him. It was 2006 and the show Lost had just started. We loved the show and loved the character Boone, so the boxer was honored with the name. And then Boone was killed off the show. oops.

I tend to like people names for my animals. I also have a couple of dogs that were named by someone else when I got them. We have five dogs, here are their names:
1. Savannah, a black standard poodle
2. Junior, a black bull mastiff/lab mix
3. Molly, a black lab mix
4. Koko, a brown and now gray (she's 10) chi-weenie mix.
5. Sam, a small black toy poodle
They keep the house a mess, and life very interesting. I love them all, and think they are worth all of the mess they cause :D

My adorable pooch is Isabella. It is a name that lends itself to a bunch of cute nicknames, too. I have also found through the years that all of my pets have to have a middle name. When they are in trouble I HAVE to be able to use their full name or I am just standing there stuttering.... :)
