The Painters Are Here! The Painters Are Here!

by Leann

We have lived in our current home for 21 years. In that time we have replaced many things--expensive things. Like air conditioning units and the roof. But as for the aesthetics? Only the wood floor my husband put down in the dining room was really just to make the indoors prettier. Probably because I am the only one who cares about "prettier." I did get some wallpaper border upstairs and in the utility room when I asked for them as "gifts." But until this week, we had the same old paint and the same old worn-out carpet.

After our visit to South Carolina, my husband finally decided all his friends were retired, so why wasn't he? He came home and went back to work thinking all the time, "I could be fishing right now." He called a painting contractor and now half the house is a beautiful, soothing, eggshell white. The rest will be done next week. They will also paint the bathroom vanity cabinets upstairs and down--something I've wanted to do for years. I went to Lowe's and the carpeting installer is coming Monday to measure. We have needed new carpet for six or seven years now. The thought of draining the water bed, however, has been the deterrent (excuse, maybe?) and I haven't been well enough to do something like that on my own. Saturday, the water bed was drained! (It took a whopping 4 hours. Now how hard was that?)

Will this be one of the best Christmases ever for me? You betcha. But the biggest reason isn't just all this fixing that needed to be done for years. The best reason is my two granddaughters will be here--not to mention my kids. They won't recognize the old place! (YAY!!!!)

How about you? What are some of the best gifts you ever received?

I've been working on ours for a long time. This year, for the first time since my husband's mother was alive, the washer and dryer will be moved out of the kitchen, the plumbing and electrical removed and there will be space!!! I've built a new home for them, the dining room, living room, kitchen and downstairs bathrooms are in an upheaval. It's what I asked for, for Christmas and gotten it. Who says you need to have presents in big bows to make them what you want???

Looks like you're getting closer to the move to South Carolina.

Yes, step by step. Ev, your house sounds like mine! Painters found a leak in the upstairs plumbing and behind the refrigerator. Good thing they came!

Eggshell sounds lovely, Leann! Know you'll enjoy a fabulous holiday with the kids and grands!

Ok, promise not to laugh--I've had many great gifts over the years, but finally getting a tambourine in 1991 from my sweet dh was one of the best! Then, a few years later, he gave me my very own tool box, which is also a small step-ladder. These presents showed me he actually *listened* to me and gave me something I really wanted/needed!

We are doing our kitchen
(except for the cabinets and appliances).
It is a large warm sunny space and the walls are painted buttercream,i.e. pale yellow. The floor is adobe with blue mosaic tile insets. I love it already. It is a gift that it will be done before next friday so well before Christmas.

Oh, sounds WONDERFUL Debra! This eggshell white I chose has a yellow tint to it and it so soothing.

So happy to hear about the updates to your house. Changes like that can actually give you a well needed lift and make you feel so much better about life in general. And adding the grandkids' visit will make it that much sweeter. Congrats and have a wonderful Christmas.

I know how wonderful it is to get some much needed redecorating done. It's thrilling! I felt that way last year when we got our wall-to-wall carpeting removed and had the hardwood floors refinished.

Thanks Lynda. Nancy, my husband put hardwood floor in our dining room about 5 years ago and it's just beautiful. But since we will be moving, we're going to replace the old carpet with new. But the new house will have wood floors throughout. I am done with carpet after this round!

Patience. The best gift of all.

I was never a patient person, but I guess that was an attribute I needed to acquire. The universe is wise. :-)
