The Great Food Truck Race?

By Kate Collins

Thanks to my niece, I have a new favorite form of mindless entertainment – “The Great Food Truck Race.” She introduced it to me this week, and since then, I’ve watched about four hours of it and can’t wait for more. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the competition. Maybe it’s watching other people deal with deadlines. Maybe it’s salivating over the yummy food they prepare. Maybe it’s because I can write my blog while it’s on and it doesn’t distract me. At any rate, it makes me wonder who thinks up these shows. A food truck race? Really?

My son and daughter have their favorites. One likes “Pickers.” The other likes “Say Yes to the Dress.” My all time favorite is "Dancing With the Stars," and I don't care who the stars are as long as my favorite Pros are on (especially Maxim. Yum). For me, it's about the dance, not the personal lives of the stars.

Right up there with DWTS is HGTV’s “House Hunters International,” because I love to see what kind of living quarters are available all over the world. I’ve been awed by the gorgeous, modern houses in a place like Bali, and horrified by abodes in Italy.

Why do we have such a fascination with these shows? Are we a society of Peeping Toms? Do we like to live vicariously, or, on the other hand, gratefully?

What is your favorite reality show and why? Why do you think they’re so popular?

Happy Labor Day!

I swear each year I'm not going to watch reality shows and every year I watch anyway. I like Big Brother, Survivor, The Great Food Truck Race, and Next Food Network Star. I still don't know why I watch that one, they don't always get a show even when they do win. Maybe it's like when we were kids and thought the grass was greener on the other side or we can imagine ourselves in place of one of the contestants. But I do watch them sadly. This year I'm going to try to watch some different shows.

I love The Amazing Race - it's so fun to see where they travel and I think the camera people do a fantastic job. We also watch the Food Truck Race and emjoy ita long with Dancing With the Stars. I wonder if Maxim will be on this year. Bring back Derek!!

Dancing With The Stars is the only reality show that I watch consistently.

I love a cooking show now and then, am always in awe of what those chefs create. I am not much of a cook myself, but love going to restaurants and try new things.
I don't watch much tv, let alone reality shows, I prefer reading and blogging.

Kaye, your wish has been granted. Derek is coming back! Yay!

I watch way too much reality TV. More of the 'story reality' shows--like 'Real Housewives' of wherever, or 'Millionaire Matchmaker.", than the competition shows.
My weakness has always been cooking shows. My all time favorite being'Good Eats' and 'Iron Chef America', or "The Next Iron Chef'.
Then again...I've got more than a little crush on Alton Brown.
Whom I've met several times.
Ladies, he is a gentleman, and a doll. :)

I absolutely abhor all so-called reality shows, with the exception of HGTV's House Hunters International. I like it because I too like to see how people live in other countries, and like my mother I'm nosy about other peoples houses.

I love House Hunters shows except for the one where they take a family to a vacation spot.
I follow baseball (love that other cute Derek) but confess to flipping over to DIY and HGTV frequently. When we first got cable, I watched House Hunters obsessively. I was so glad when they started to give the house prices. (Did anyone else see the one show where the buyer decided not to buy anything?)
I find the soundtracks on DWTS and many DIY shows to be far too LOUD and flip them off for that reason.
I love Cooking Channel; last summer we visited a seafood restaurant in Maine which had been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.

I'm with Kaye and watch The Amazing Race religiously. I'm a travel bug and love to explore new places, and I keep adding locales to my travel bucket list as a result of watching the show. It's also cool to be able to say "I've been there" sometimes.

I'll have to tune into The Amazing Race. I've never watched it!

Loved The Amazing Race only in its first season.
Have been watching The Great Food Truck Race only because they filmed part of it in Manhattan, KS.
I've also enjoyed watching parts of America's Got Talent.

I don't typically watch 'reality' shows, but I have found a fascination for "Hillbilly Handfishin'". It is so much fun to watch people completely out of their element and wading, swimming, crawling through muddy rivers and lakes and ticklin' for catfish!!! It's on Animal Planet and I found it one night on shift as a sort of revenge to my crew peeps for making me listen to shows on Tru TV channel. And ended up diggin' it as much as my crew peeps did. Go figure.
