On Holiday

By Heather Webber / Heather Blake

I love the word "holiday" used in reference to vacation. An English term, I think? Anyway, I think I need to insert it permanently into my vocabulary.

Sabbaday Falls in NH
This week the family (me, Mr. W, Baby Girl, and son #2) are away. Relaxing. Having fun in New Hampshire--quite a bit away from home. We've been doing lots and lots--walking, hiking, picnicking, alpine sliding, mini-golfing, horseback riding, shopping, eating (a lot), reading (tons!), and just soaking up the mountain air.

In a few hours I'll be on a raft in the middle of a river, probably clinging to anything (or anyone) I can. And probably screaming like a little girl. It'll be my first time white water rafting, and I really hope I'm not thrown overboard (please!). I'll let you know how it goes.

Anyone else doing something new this summer? Taking any special holidays?

To me a holiday would be doing abosolutly NOTHING Six days a week I run kids here and there take someone to physical therapy or the grocery store or anywhere else they have to go. Then on my one day a week "off" I clean house, cook a decent meal, and attempt to get caught up on things. The only times I have to read are when I am waiting for someone to get done with something or when I am in the tub or late at night when I can hardly keep my eyes open. So having a day to just stay in bed or a nice bubble bath and read, read, read would be my idea of a holiday. Hope you enjoy yours. It sounds nice if I wasn't so tired.

We will be on holiday in August. We are heading to our favorite beach, Destin, FL for some time in the bright clean Gulf sunshine.

By the time we get there Florida and most of the surrounding states will have already headed back to school so we should have a much less crowded town than in years past.

I'm not much for crowds hence my love for the suburbs. ;)

Going to Austin, Texas to take our son to college. That's as exciting as it gets for us, but it IS a special trip!

Sounds like you are having a great time! I hope you love the rafting trip. I love river rafting. And yes, I've been thrown out, during a pretty awesome rapid too, but I survived and it was fun. :) This year our holiday will be a road trip to Yellowstone, Glacier, and then on up into Canada to visit Banff and Jasper National Parks. I can't wait. Lots of hiking, and hopefully lots of wildlife viewing.

My holiday isn't till september, first my collegues with little children are going away. And certainly it won't be as exciting as yours! I just have to relax and read a lot, that is fun enough. O, and eat lots of new and tasty foods!

I'm in Boston as I write this! Sadly, only for a few days...but it's been great to visit my college and see all the new buildings they've built since I graduated...almost 20 years ago!

Love all these holidays--and those not taking one, I hope that you can sneak away sometime soon.

As for my rafting--it was so fun! Loved every wet second of it. Managed not to fall in, but on the last run, we get dumped in. LOL. COLD! I was a big 5'2" goosebump there for a little bit. But best news of all--saw an OTTER!!!!!!!!!!! Still smiling over that. Will prob. post pics on Monday at my blog (www.booksbyheather.net).

The screaming like a little girl is the funnest part!!!

We went up to Steamboat Springs over 4th of July weekend and did some hiking and fishing and such. We'll go rafting next trip. I think we're going to try for every other year up there.

I didn't get as much reading as I'd have liked, but had a great time with Lady K and DH.

We spent a week in LA with our youngest. And I head out to Atalanta for Dragon*Con the end of August. Our "holidays" are usually spent with me driving the RV somewhere and then setting it all up, breaking it down and doing all the cooking in between.

I think it's time for another only me road trip.

We're stuck at home, but Sabbaday Falls and hiking in New Hampshire reminds me of the old days when we were first married. In fact, we spent our wedding night in Conway. I love NH and miss going there frequently.
