Your First Costume

Halloween is coming and these days, you've got to grab a costume fast or your kids end up with some real duds.

When I was little, there were very few costumes for sale and those all featured plastic Wonder Woman or Hulk masks and didn't stand up to miles of trick or treating.

For us, a costume consisted of things we could find in our parents' closet. We were hobos, scarecrows, ghosts, gypsies, hippies, mummies, devils, and clowns.

This year, my daughter (she's 4) is going as Cinderella. Her costume is so elaborate you'd think I was presenting her at court.

My son (he's 7) thinks zombies are cool. I don't know why, but I suspect I can blame the new Scooby Doo cartoons. He doesn't like masks, but wants me to put make-up on his face so he looks dead (and glows in the dark too).

Because I love Halloween, I'm going with the flow. But I'm wearing a homemade costume (I'm the beanstalk and I sewed a Ken doll climbing up my leg as "Jack.")

What about you? Will you dress up? Do you remember your first costume?

On the day before Halloween, one of my friends is having a "Goth Halloween party" so I'll likely dress up for it. On the actual Halloween, likely not. Just will pass out candy. My first costume that I remember was a white bunny rabbit costume that I was able to wear for a few years....maybe 3 years or so.

LOL, JB! Great minds! I blogged about costumes today at The Naked Hero.

I'm not dressing up this year, and neither are the kids (too old for trick-or-treating and no parties to go to this year). I can't remember my first costume, but I did love my Batwoman costume, circa 1979. :)

The first costume I remember (I was four) was an Indian maiden--very un-PC. I remember that it rained, and I was wearing my pink moccasin slippers with beads.

For my daughter's first Halloween, I made her a Siamese cat costume, with a long tail. I think it's still in the attic...

I'm trying to find a costume suitable for the elementary school library where I work. Even the book character costumes that you find in the stores look more like street walkers. When did Halloween become all about sex? I remember dressing up in my grandmothers ball gown for one Halloween when I was a kid. Wish I still had that dress.

I'm old enough now that when I was little we just wore what we had at home. I went as a hobo at least 2 years and wore a very hot rubber mask with my jeans and flannel shirt.MaryC

I have never liked dressing up, but have sure helped others do it. Last year I made a prim white apron for a daughter in law, she and our son held a party, and dressed as an Amish couple. Yesterday my 18 yr. old granddaughter took me shopping for fabric so she can be a Greek Goddess. All you need is white fabric that drapes well and lots of gold accessories. It will be interesting. Just to prove how sorry my childhood was, my mom told me that trick or treating was against the law one year. Next day I saw all the stuff my cousins had collected. This was in the 50's, so maybe there was a warning out, for reasons of health, polio was big then. But I felt cheated. Happy Halloween.

When my sister and I were kids, we had the Wonder Woman masks and weird nylon costumes. I dressed up as a space woman in a homemade costume when, I am embarrassed to say, I was uh 28. There was a flashlight, black tights and a lot of foil involved.

Oh, gosh I vaguely remember one year my mother made costumes and my sister and I were Mary and her little lamb. My daughter's first costume was Little Red Ridinghood - I sewed a cape on a red hoodie and my husband wore a wolf mask to take her trick or treating- he still has it 20 years later!!

The first costume I remember was a hobo at age 5. My mother made up my face with "washable" makeup and my face was grey (lighter shade of black) for a week. My father wouldn't take me anywhere for a week.

The next year she made me a witch's costume and dyed my waist length blonde hair green with a "washable" dye. My hair was green for a week. My father and I never did go out together much the first week of Novemeber. LOL.

This year I will be wearing a black sparkly cape and a blue and black swirled witch's hat to school on the Friday before. It's safe and I can work in it.

The only costume I can remember (and it wasn't the first, I know) was homemade with tons of make-up. I was a "swami." Don't even know if that is spelled right since that word is never used anymore. No one in my class recognized me. That was fun.

We need to get my son's cosutme soon as well as buy the stuff for my baby's costume. I want him to be a dragon.

my first costume I remember was when I was 10 and I used a dance cosutme to be a fifties' girl. The one I remember cause of a picture was when I was 2 and I was a ghost and a cute one at that. lol

Dressing up has always been my least favorite part about Halloween. The earliest costume I can remember is one of Sleeping Beauty, complete with plastic pink cape and one of those masks you can hardly see out of.

Mare, I have laughed about your comment all day. I am still laughing!

I think costumes are getting more riske. Every teen girl costume I saw in the store filled me with genuine horror. MY daughter will go as a nun from the age of 13-17!

Jack and the Beanstalk? I love it! That is really original.

My first costume was a pro job - an angel, because I had neighbors who were in theatrics, with a large costume wardrobe. My costume was beautifully sparkly and shimmery, with huge white feather wings. All of my friends, though, dressed as hoboes. I felt a little overdressed.

My son has always been the creative one. One year he dressed like a tall headless lumberjack, carrying his own head in his hands. This year he and his friend's 20-month-old girl are dressing up as each other. I can't wait to see that!

I know I dressed as a hobo and I bet before that I was a color ghost made from pillow cases.

Would love to see a picture of yourself with Jack climbing up your leg.

Laineshots,

I would LOVE to see a pic of that!

And I like the 'color ghost' Dru!

The first costume I can remember was Little Red Riding Hood. I don't know if I will do it this year, or not, but I love to dress up as a clown and take pumpkin bread (or some other kind of treat) around to my friends and neighbors.

I believe my first costume was a pumpkin. I wish I could still dress up I love Halloween. We go all out on decorating even though we only receive a handfull of trick or treaters a yr. Our neighborhood just doesn't have many kids, which I like except at Halloween time :(
