When Free Stuff Isn't Free

Dear Cozy Chicks Readers,

We love you!  That's why we have been offering to send free bookmarks to our readers.  But unbeknownst to us, earlier today someone posted this offer on a website called Totally Free Stuff--as well as at least another six "get something for free"sites.  Since then we have been INUNDATED with bookmark requests.  We'd love to be able to honor them all, but the fact is we simply can't afford it.

In addition to the bookmarks, we have to pay for the envelopes, the labels, and the most expensive part, the postage.  One hundred requests alone is $44 in postage--we've had many more than that requested.  Our bookmarks cost between 10-15 cents each (and we send out 7 of them with each request).

So, sadly, we have to rescind our offer to send YOU our faithful readers who support us with your comments, your emails, and most of all by buying our books, until further notice.

If you still want the bookmarks, we'd be glad to send them to you.  Just send us a self-addressed stamped envelope to:
The Cozy Chicks
P.O. Box 230
N. Greece, NY  14515

Thank you for your understanding.

The Cozy Chicks

I completely understand and I appreciate this post. You ladies are so kind to do that. Wow, I am sorry that happened.

Lorna, do you have any idea when/by whom it was posted? I'm in a panic that it was someone in our writers group that I gave bookmarks to last night. If so, I really apologize.

We have no idea who posted it. And the requests are STILL coming in. We're flattered that people want to spread the word about our books, but I'm sure not everyone requesting bookmarks is going to want to read cozy mysteries. We all have limited promotional budgets, and this is really sapping us, because we want to honor all the requests that come in.

I've put out word to the writers group that if anyone was involved in that Free Stuff posting, please do whatever possible to get it pulled off the site. So far, no one has claimed responsibility and I'm really hoping the timing of the post is just a coincidence but again, if it's not, I'm very sorry.

Boy, there seems to be a lot of that going around! Sorry it happened to you. You were so nice to send bookmarks and offer this. I got mine a few months back and was so glad to get them. I totally understand where you are coming from. It is a shame that when people see FREE they go bonkers with it. Thanks again for all you gals do. Love the blog and your books!

Sorry to hear this happen to ya'll. Requesting a self-addressed stamped envelope is not asking too much, especially considering how many bookmarks you send.

That is such a bummer that has happened. I think asking us to send in self-addressed envelopes is a great solution!

I think a SASE is the least we can do ... especially since y'all run so many contests and give so much away.

This upsets me that someone finds it necessary to exploit the freebie bookmarks. I agree with Patti when she said that people go crazy when they see "Free". It doesn't matter what's free, they think they are entitled to whatever it is. I'm so glad I got the bookmarks when I did and I use one with each book I read. I'm so sorry that they did this and I hope it's resolved as soon as possible. Thank you to the Cozy Chicks!

This is wrong I am sorry this is happening. People do go crazy when they see "free". I agree with everyone a SASE is the least a person can do. I am so happy with mine I am using two of the book marks now.

I'm so sorry that happened. I love free stuff, but I always pay it back (or forward?) by supporting writers and buying their books. I keep my bookmarks on my nightstand so they are always handy, and when I see how cute they are I always smile. I agree that a SASE is the right way to go.

I just requested mine before this happened, on July 6th, and would be more than happy to re-request through the mail if you haven't sent mine out yet.

This reminds me of the frenzy at the first building on the left from the main gate at the NY State Fair. So many people rush right in there to snag anything free that once we were caught up in the crowd and couldn't get out of it. I hate that this happened to you; I love my bookmarks.

I'm so sorry this has happened. Like Allsion, when I get free stuff I like to pay it forward buy supporting the authors.

So sorry that has happenned. I feel that asking for a SASE will not be a problem for anyone who truly cares about the books of the Cozy Chicks.

If I really want something that is free and a SASE is requested it would not keep me from requesting.

Hope you are able to get the listing off the free stuff sites.

Thanks, everyone. We did receive one nasty note from someone unhappy about our decision. I don't think that kind of person would read a cozy mystery.

Well, I am glad I have mine! And shame on the person who got that posted on that "freebie" website.
