Soap Opera Addict Speaks Up!

Yesterday, I watched my first daytime soap opera since college. Catch what I said? Daytime. I've always been a sucker for nighttime soaps like Dark Shadows (remember that one?), Peyton Place, Dallas (loved JR), Falcon Crest, Dynasty, and the humorous Soap, to name just a few. And the new ones - Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives (don't even try to fool yourself. Those two are soaps!).

But what really tickled me is that so many of the oldie goldies are still out there - As the World Turns, General Hospital, One Life to Live, All My Children, Days of Our Live...... and the one I watched, The Young and the Restless.

What drama! All the family issues, dysfunctional relationships, sexual tension, beautiful actors, murder and mayhem, conniving and plotting. I loved it! I'm calling it research for my next murder mystery, if anyone asks.

Am I hooked after only one episode? Probably. But I'll record the shows so I can watch them when I can. And I have to try The Bold and the Beautiful. Can't wait.

How about you? Are you a soap opera addict?

Sometimes I will eat lunch when one is on and have it on as background noise, but I can eat without the TV on for a week and turn it on the next and the same thing is still happening.

I watched Days in college and a bunch of the guys on our hall would watch too!

Years ago I was hooked on Young and the Restless. Every now and then when channel surfing I will see it and turn it on for a few minutes - I can't really follow the new storylines but it is fun to see the characters! :)

I was a soap opera junkie to the max. At one time I watched at least 10 and to this day I don't know how I did it since we VCRs weren't affordable yet.

Now I don't watch any and sometimes I missed them, sometimes not, especially when I see the same character, older now, doing the same thing when we were both younger.

My favorite was All My Children.

I ran home from school to watch the original Dark Shadows and watched Days of our Lives.

I haven't seen Days of Our Lives in years, but understand that Frances Reid, who played matriarch Alice Horton, passed away recently and the character is also (or has also) passed away. Apparently, they've brought back a lot of old characters for her final illness and passing.

The other I watched are long gone. Another World, The Doctors, etc.

Watched Guiding Light my entire life until it went off the air last fall...that just broke my heart. The characters become family members.

I used to watch the whole ABC lineup. But then Ryan's Hope went off the air. So I picked up Santa Barbara. Gone. Fell in love with Another World. It too, is history. A few of the characters from AW were picked up on As the World Turns. So I followed. Now it will be gone this fall.

The moral of my story? Apparently, I'm the kiss of death to soaps. So for the good of the industry, I'll stay away. ;)

PS - Knot's Landing rocked!

Ryan's Hope! Yes! Loved it and it was MY hope I could watch it without the rug rats interrupting all the time. LOL. I think that show saved my sanity. One of the main characters is now the love interest of Jason Lee's character's mother on the new show Memphis Beat. That show is so good. And the mother is soooooooo southern. Old soap actors never die!

This is one of my super-secret guilty pleasures... I've had a day job since 1988, but read recaps... and NOW? the ABC soaps are online the next day, or I can catch them on YouTube... because I didn't already waste ENOUGH time on line.

I find 'soap twists' can fit very well into cozies... the one I'm writing has an All My Children nod...

I remember when Ryan's Hope first went on the air. It's great to watch a soap from the very beginning. Without the flashbacks and the continuous re-caps, the action is very fast paced. Didn't dare miss a day. But after a while it bogged down to the standard soap snail pace and I got restless and stopped watching. I was quite addicted to Peyton Place way back when but never followed any of the other evening soaps - except Grey's Anatomy. You're right, it should qualify.

I'm still a Dark Shadows Fan! Barnabas looks down on me from a poster above my desk! I ran home to watch Luke& Laura's wedding on GH, with Elizabeth Taylor there!
Ran a GH web site for a decade- before ABC had their own even.
Now, although I rarely watch, I am watching GH this week as I fill in as Scoopster and Blogger at Wubs.Net
What fun I had in the early web site days interviewing actors & actresses! Even made The Hollywood Reporter once!

I saw the very first episode of Ryan's Hope back in the day! Didn't follow it, though. My favorite back in the '70s was All My Children. Then in the '80s I got hooked on Days of Our Lives, and have watched it off and on ever since. It was very sad to find out that Francis Reid (Alice Horton) had passed away. She was cool! If you only miss a day here or there, you can usually keep up with the storylines, but go a couple of months or more, and things "change". :) (BTW, How many guys can Sami Brady fall in love with during our lifetimes?)

And calling it "research" is hilarious! I love it!

I watched them all at one point or another over the years! I still follow GH and OLTL. But my all time favorite was Santa Barbara. Nighttime ones were amazing too. Loved Dallas and Dynasty. Thank God for DVD boxsets--I'm rewatching Season 5 of Dallas right now. :)

My favorite was As the World Turns. I was heartbroken when they announced they are cancelling it after 50 years. How can they do this? My Grandma watched this, my Mom and me. Feels like losing an old freind. :(

Still stuck on "One Life to Live" after 20 years. P.S. Try Soap Net. They re-run the days episodes at night.......
