It's my favorite

by Lorraine Bartlett / Lorna Barrett / L.L. Bartlett

Mr. L doesn't understand how I can have a favorite part of almost every song I hear.  Ohh!  Did you notice that nifty chord progression?  How about that interesting bit of percussion?

He thinks I'm a nut.

Full fork Therefore, he doesn't understand how I can have a favorite fork, either.

My family has had a summer cottage for almost fourty years.  Like a lot of summer cottages, it has a lot of odds and ends.  Mismatched dishes, sheets that don't match the pillowcases, etc.  And lots of interesting bits and pieces.

Fork bottom Most of the silverware is silver plated, which doesn't like being put in a dishwasher.  (After three years without a dishwasher, we finally have one once again.  YIPPEE! Although I will admit that hand washing dishes keeps your fingernails nice and clean.)  The dishwasher tends to discolor the silverware, but other than that, it seems to be okay.  But these photos are more discolored than the actual piece of "silverware."  Must've been the lighting.

This little fork is my favorite, probably because of its decoration--and among all the other forks in the drawer, it's one of a kind.  It's kinda small, which makes me think it's either a dessert or a salad fork.

Backside fork And not only does it have decoration on the front, but it's decorated on the back, too.  Something you don't see on the silverware of today.

A friend of mine bought a lot of interesting dishes -- all with a floral theme.  She was determined to "build" a set of 12.  I thought how wonderful it would be to eat off of a different pretty plate every night.

Do you have a lot of different favorites, too?

My family finds it strange that I have a favorite glass (and it changes from time to time) that I don't want anyone else to use. And that same is true of coffee cups. It never fails though. One of the boys will invariably use my glass or cup and leave it somewhere with something growing in it. You would think that in a house where there are at least ten glasses or cups per person that they could leave two alone for me.

It might be strange, but I have several book marks i like to use. There is one in particular I like and I tend to use it for each book ,unless I am reading more then one at a time.

Oh my, this is me to a tee. I have a favorite glass, a favorite coffee cup, a favorite tea cup (different than coffee one), favorite silverware, favorite pen, favorite chair, and on and on. Dave thinks I'm actually in a rut - which could be, I guess.

Ha! The answer is yes :) But some favorites depend on my mood too, or what I am using them for...my favorite writing pen is not for use doing bills etc.....I know, weird...can't help it....

I have favorite smells: fresh cut grass or hay, the air after the first rain of summer, my agastaches that has foliage that smells like bubblegum.

I have a favorite pen type, Tul. I searched forever to find the perfect flow of ink and size of point.

My favorite towel for my hair...it's a linen type I found in a hotel in Italy...I absconded with two....sigh....It is thin enough to not weigh my cranium down when I wrap my wet hair in it and it soaks up the moisture like no one's bidness.

My favorite is a spoon from a log gone pharmacy with lunch counter called Read's Drugstore. The spoon has Read's on the handle and it was one of the few things I got after my grandmother passed away. She used to take me "uptown" every year when school was out for Summer for "passing" and we'd have lunch at Read's and see a movie together. I cherish that spoon and no one is allowed to use it but me.

My favorite pj's, with the Boston Red Sox logo's. I have plenty of others but the only time I choose a different pair is when these are in the laundry. One of these days they're going to disintegrate while I'm sleeping and I'll wake up naked. :-)

Ack! Look what I did! The dreaded misplaced apostrophe in "logos". I have brought shame upon myself. It was a typo! Just a typo! Honest!

I have a lot of favorites including my mug that no one can touch, my favorite spoon and my favorite chair that no one can sit in.

I completely understand the favorite fork, Lorraine. My mom always uses the same kind of fork and she has a crystal glass that she uses exclusively (other than the mug she uses exclusively). They're strictly off-limits to everyone else.

I have a fave spoon (it's a soup spoon) and a favorite mug, too. But I'll share with others. :)

Favorite mug for sure..I actually think that is pretty common. I have a kind of glass that is my favorite but we have a set of about 6 so it doesn't have to be a specific one in the set!

If that were my fork, it would be my favorite too! I love the idea of building a set of 12 different plates - or silverware. I think I will!

Yes, I have favorites, things I just prefer to use over all others. There is usually no reason that makes sense to others--they just ARE my favorites, and that's all there is to it: teacup and saucer, bowl (my bowls were all made by a friend, all different), sofa pillow, pen, wooden spoon. But that fork is wonderful!

It's official, Lorna: you're not a nut. Or else Mr. Lorna thinks we're all nuts.
I have these tendencies as well, girls. Favorite fork, cup, spot on the couch, and yes, a favorite book mark. It's my OCD in me, I would guess. I'm just a control freak. But also, my mother makes fun of me for this, I have a certain way of eating everything. There are certain foods that I have to eat a certain way. Like Peeps. I have a certain way of eating them. Sad? Maybe, but I like me the way I am. Nuts of the world unite!!
