What's in a name? Quite a lot, actually . . .

by Lorraine Bartlett / Lorna Barrett / L.L. Bartlett

My first book was published under the name L.L. Bartlett.  My (then) agent thought it would be a good idea to try to hide my gender so that men would be more likely to buy my first-person, male POV paranormal suspense/mystery (whatever) book.  It didn't work all that well, and the book didn't do all that well, either.  But then I sold the paperback and audio rights, and things worked out okay.  I CheatedBy_Death.sm mention this because all right wasn't good enough.  I wanted better distribution for the third book.  In between then and now ... I wrote cozy mysteries that have done quite well.  My agent felt that trying for a print publication for this series would be taking a step backward.  I'm not sure I believe that -- but I pay her to give me good advice, and so far she hasn't steered me wrong.

So, I'm self-publishing the third book in the series, and I guess you could say that Cozy Chicks is my first blog tour stop.  (Thanks, guys!)  So, if you use an e reader, I hope you'll give (the first book, Murder on the Mind, and) CHEATED BY DEATH a try.  There are descriptions on both KINDLE and SMASHWORDS.  (It's on sale on Kindle for $1.99 for the month of June.)

A_Crafty_Killing.smI also write cozy mysteries as Lorraine Bartlett (that's my real name, in case you didn't know.  Glad to meet you, too!) I'm really excited to have the Victoria Square Mystery series coming out where I can use my name, not hide behind initials or a pseudonym.  And a couple of days ago, I got my cover.  Isn't it pretty?  Of course A Crafty Killing won't be out until February 3, 2011 -- which seems like a million years from now, but will no doubt pop up before I am ready for it.

And part of the getting ready for it is to find a way to let my readers know that Lorna and Lorraine are the same person.  Okay, most of you guys get it . . . and I'm reaching out to my Lorna readers on Facebook and letting them know, too.  But that doesn't scratch the surface.  I'll just have to cross my fingers and hope the book finds a life on its own.  (Although it won't hurt that the first chapter is contained at the end of Chapter & Hearse -- so please look for it.)

And by the way, I'll be revamping both my L.L. and Lorraine web sites in the next couple of week, which should be lots of fun.  So if you think about it in a couple of weeks, stop on by.  My characters, Jeff and Katie, will be waiting for you.

And so will I.

Lorraine, Lorna, and L.L. -
I will be sure to jump on amazon and get the first two Jeff Resnick books for my Kindle! I am always looking for books during the summer!
Hope all your personas have a great day! :)

Thank you, Andrea. Although the second book, DEAD IN RED, isn't yet available on Kindle. I'm waiting for the rights to revert to me before I make it available as an e-book.

Lorraine, I love your Booktown series and am excited to try your other personas. :-)

It's difficult sometimes to keep all the different author names clear in my head. Guess it doesn't really matter all that much, but still. I know there is a purpose for using one name for one series and another for the next.

Best of luck to you for all of them!

It's interesting that you went by initials ... and why you used them. I wonder if readers are fooled by this, or for that matter if they even care about the gender of the author... Possibly, or even probably, they do... and that's a shame. A good storyteller is a good storyteller, no mater the gender.

Good luck to all of you.:) I self-published a book, but discovered I'm not a good publicist for myself and it was a limited market book anyway. Yours should do very well.

No matter what name--I'll buy it. :)

Of course, now I need an e-reader. Hmmm.

I love that cover. One day I'll have an e-reader. Sigh. I've marked down A Crafty Killing...I'm almost preordering everything now. LOL

Glad you cleared that up, Lorraine - I was confused about your triple identity! I'm impressed with those of you who manage to write from the POV of the other gender. I've tried it, and it is not easy. Lots of unconscious pitfalls there. How do you manage to do it so convincingly?

Lorraine, I will be sure to get on Amazon and get the kindle version of the first Jeff Resnick book. I will be checking out your other series as well.
Good luck with all your books/series.

I have read, Murder on the Mind, Dead in Red and now Cheated By Death and have to say that I haven´t been disappointed by any of them.

The Booktown Series are great and they are all now in my library as well.

My gauge of a good book is if it grips me in the first page it goes in my shopping basket, and all of your books, no matter which name they are written under, do just that. Thanks.

I've read all of your books and I love them all. Cheated by Death is an awesome read!

You don't need an e-reader if you download it from Smashwords...you can read it on your computer.

I read and enjoyed Murder on the Mind, but didn't realize you had another LL Bartlett book available. I'll be sure to look for it.

Laine -- it took me almost 11 years to get Jeff's "voice" right. And as he's a Beta male -- it came a lot easier than if he was Alpha. But still, that was a long learning curve.

Thanks, Babs, for giving Jeff a try. Those readers who've liked Tricia's and Angelica's relationship usually like Jeff's and Richard's. (And everybody seems to love Brenda.)

Penny T: Cheated is the third Jeff Resnick book. Dead in Red is now officially out of print, but I bought up everything that was in the warehouse and am offering it for sale at considerably less than the publisher (postage included). You can find out about it on my LLBartlett.com web site.

Michele and Dru -- I love you guys!

Your real name cozies are my favorites but I like to see other series by favorite authors.

I often check Fantastic Fiction for book series so I can read them in order. They also list other names that the author uses. Be sure to let them know about any additional names that you might use.

Glad you're "out there" Lorraine. :) It's good to let everyone know who you are. We'll all be watching those ebook sales. It's exciting.
