On April 1, 1996, Taco Bell announced that it had purchased the Liberty Bell and planned to rename it….the Taco Liberty Bell!
As you can imagine, hundreds of angry American citizens began calling their state representatives and the Historic Park where the Liberty Bell was housed, demanding to know how the fast food company could change the name of a national treasure.
Taco Bell waited until the end of the day until it came clean – telling the nation that it had all been a prank in celebration of April Fool’s Day. I wonder what Ben Franklin would have made of the whole ruckus? Personally, I think he would have laughed his spectacles off.
This morning, I told my kids that Spring Break had been canceled because they’d missed too many school days due to snow. I even kept a straight face.
It was so mean. My son raged all the way to school and it was only when we got in the carpool line that I told him I’d been playing an April Fool’s joke on him.
I think he’s going to be mad at me all day. Good thing I’m bringing his class cupcakes! Of course, when I whip the top of the cupcake holder, the kids will be presented with a selection of carrot and celery sticks in Dixie cups (rabbit food is appropriate for this time of year, right?). I’ll let them carry on for a bit and then I’ll fetch the real treats (Pink Peeps rabbits on green icing surrounded by jelly beans and gummy carrots).
Are you planning any pranks today or have you been the recipient of one?
