Mad for Ads

By Heather

I haven’t been watching a lot of TV lately (egads—what’s the world coming to?), but since I still don’t have a DVR (am I the only one who doesn’t?) I have to sit through the ads.

Oddly, I’m okay with that. There have been some funny commercials out there. From the Progressive ads (yes, most are annoying, but the man purse ad is so funny), and the Etrade baby…definitely watchable.

But the ones that make me laugh out loud? The Orkin ads. The ones where the giant bugs are trying to sleaze their way into the house, using different tactics (delivery, car broke down) only to be thwarted by the Orkin man. They’re funny and are actually effective—I kind of want to hire the Orkin man to keep the critters outside this year.

The other ads that crack me up are the Sour Patch kids ads: First they’re sour, then they’re sweet. They feature a mischievous sour patch gummy kid who first does something horrible (cutting a pigtail off a girl’s hairdo) only to then show remorse and look bashful or attempt to make things right. There’s no real “lesson” with these ads, but they make me smile every time, especially the spot featuring the bicycle rider

Do you have a favorite commercial these days? And does anyone have a VHS anymore?

I'm still in the dark ages with my VHS. I don't want to have to give it up, but it looks like it's coming to that. I have a DVD recorder, but haven't figured out how to record fro the satellite yet. And our satellite doesn't have the recorder built in either. I don't watch a lot of TV lately so no ad some to mind. The Orkin ads are funny.

We have a VCR/DVD combo by the treadmill, but we are a total DVR house - I understand it is a luxury, but it is one I sure do love - so convenient!
So I don't watch a lot of commericals, but the two that I willl pause for are the Free Credit ones and the Mac/PC commercials - both funny!

I still have VHS, even have a couple "old" tvs with the VHS/DVD players built in.

My favorite commercials are the animal ones. I especially like the Pedigree dog food commercial that David Duchovny does the voice over, although, I haven't seen it lately.

The E-trade commercials are cute, too.

I still have my trusty VHS but no DVR...if I miss the show I want to watch then I miss it. Gone. Done.

I still love the Folgers coffee commercials. They get me every time.

One of the commercials I like is the Swiffer one with the dirty mop asking to be let back in. It's really the songs they play.

I love my DVR and now that I can select shows to record online, I love it even more.

Have a good Friday.

VHS? What's that? just kidding.

We are all about the DVR here. Love it. How did parents watch their favorite shows before DVR? Did my mom just miss Kate and Allie and Dynasty while having to bathe and put me to bed? Yes, I am a child of the 80s.

I love the Snickers ad from the Super Bowl with Betty White.

I have Tivo and LOVE it because I don't have to watch commercials anymore! And really, how effective are ads anymore?? I don't think I've ever watched an ad and then rushed out to buy that product/service. So I'm much happier not having to watch them :-)

Our favorite ad is the Sears optical one where the woman lets the raccoon into the house. We still have a VCR connected to a TV but rarely use it.

My best friend thought I was just speaking "old time" when I would tell her I taped Lost. No, we really are taping it! You are not alone!

We have a dvd/vcr combo but the vcr in the living room is dead. We do have a DVR but only through our cable box.

As for commercials, I haven' seen any really that make me laugh out loud. The one I love I don't remember who it's for but it's a rich guy in the back of his limo on his cell phone using really big words and then he says "I want a ranch with horsies." That one still cracks me up to this day. I have it on a vhs tape somewhere.

Still VHS here, no DVR - just can't afford it right now. Heck, I've even had to ditch cable, which is really going to kill me come summer, when the only good programming is on USA network.

One of my favorite commercials is actually a more touching one they were showing during the Olympics, the P&G Thank You, Mom one.

We've got the most basic cable (about $10 a month) and very few channels, but as we mostly watch DVDs, that's not a problem. No DVR, but sometimes we actually do watch old VHS tapes (although I'm slowly replacing them with DVDs. Of course, when they become obsolete any minute now, I'll probably have to replace them, too.)

Since I don't watch much network TV, I don't know what the current ads are. I saw the super bowl ones on my computer.

Oh gosh--I had a whole other reply that was eaten by cyber space. Sheesh.

Okay, let's recap:

Some of these are classics! Dru, my kids are always singing, "Baby, come back!"

And the raccoon commercial is really funny, too, and always reminds me of JB!

I haven't seen the limo commercial, but it sounds funny, too.

We tried to play an old movie (VHS) recently and I think it was so old the newer VHS rejected it. LOL. Might be time to switch all those beloved movies to DVD.

I had a VCR/DVD combo until the kids shoved a spoon into it one too many times. I need to buy another VCR because I have too many movies on VHS that I miss watching!

no DVR here. I have a few shows I watch, if I'm not home for it I'll try to watch it online, but if not, no big deal.

My all-time favorite commercial is the Traveller's Insurance commercial with the little dog who is trying to protect his bone and tosses and turns in his bed all night while the song "Troubles" plays in the background.

Love the commercials! They just crack me up!

And the ones for Hallmark cards usually make me cry! And most of the Folger's ones do, too.

There is one Jarrod's commercial that I like, too. It's the one where the girl is doing the crossword puzzle and asks her friend for an 18-letter word for marriage proposal, and when she can't think of one, the first girl shows her the ring. Love that one!

My 2 1/2 year old granddaughter Maddie inherited her parents' VCR-TV combo. She knows all the buttons to push. Her mom got a Micky Mouse cassette at a garage sale and Maddie and Mickey are now in love. I scored an entire bag full of Micky, Elmo, Barney, Winnie etc, from my hairdresser. Five bucks for all! A few of those will be Easter gifts but I'm saving the rest for when the new baby comes in September. Her mom is going to need that little batch of entertainment!

We have a VHS machine, but it's in the closet for now. You are not the only one without DVR, we don't have one yet...maybe for Christmas, DH says.

I love beer commercials and I long to see the return of Louis "I'm classically chiseled" Chameleon in the Budweiser commercials from back in the day.

I love the e-trade commercials, especially when the baby is on the plane with his buddy, who calls out "dad?" when the pilot makes an announcement. Too funny!

I still use a VCR. As I work nites it's the only way.

My favorite add is really moronic. The latest Geico Insurance advert with the gigantic muffin. Only time I can recall laughing out loud at a commercial.

Yup still have the old VCR and we use it a lot. I don't know what we are going to do when that dies a natural death. My favorite all time commercial has to be the Aflac duck in Las Vegas tapping his foot to Wayne Newton. Cracked me up every time.
