What’s Your Secret Stash?

By Heather

Picture it: Cold, snowy afternoon. 3:30 or so. I’m eyeball deep in my current manuscript, which is due, ahem, Monday (but we won’t go into that). And I feel it happening. The need… for chocolate. This is a rare occurrence as I’m not a big chocolate fan but every once in a while it’s just plain necessary.

We don’t really keep sweets in the house, so chocolate is often scarce… I know this. And I plan for it. Just for occasions such as these.

So I make a beeline for my office, dig through a basket in the corner of a bookcase and voila (angels singing), I pull forth a fun-sized Snickers bar from my secret (I guess it’s not so secret anymore) stash. Okay, full disclosure, I pulled two.

Those little bars really are satisfying—and hit the spot. And thankfully there are more in that little bag, because I have a feeling I’m going to make another trip to that stash later today…

But what I want to know is what you stash away for One of Those Days. Come on, ‘fess up. I can’t be the only one who hides favorites. I hear it’s Girl Scout cookie season—who’s tucking away a box of Thin Mints? (Oh wait, that’s me…)

York Peppermint Patties...top shelf in the door of the freezer side of the fridge, not visible by the kids because of the lip of the shelf. They are too short to see them. The sad thing is, my husband knows, so I have to plant Reese's Peanut Butter Cups there, too. He's more inclined to grab one of those first and leave my stash alone. He thinks I just like cold peanut butter cups, but it's really only just to get him to leave my peppermint patties alone.

Shannon, you made me laugh out loud. Love the image of planting the peanut butter cups so your husband won't steal any of your stash!

I usually have a stash of some kind of chocolate in a drawer in the fridge. After Halloween, I did something similar to Shannon. I bought a bunch of candy corn so J would eat those instead of my Kit Kats, he didn't get the memo and finished them off and didn't understand why I was mad.

I'll have a stash of Girl Scout cookies in about a week when the ones I ordered come in. Unfortunately can't eat them until after Lent. ugh!

I have snack-sized Hershey bars hidden in a deep vase. The kids never found them but the raccoon did! I am calling animal control today!

For me it isn't sweets, but really bad, cheap, frozen pizza. There is always one or two tucked way in the back of the freezer, carefully hiding behind frozen vegetables. Odd yes, but satisfying.

not just you Amy, I hide frozen pizza too. its a guilty pleasure.

I have snack-size Pringles on the top shelf in the back of my kitchen cabinet hidden by other items.

M&M's are hidden in the bottom of my night table behind some old books. If they are in plain sight, The Big Guy aka hubby will scoff them down in a heartbeat.

I have the fun-sized Hershey bars usually in a drawer in the frig. I only buy a small pack at a time not the big bag because when I remember they are, they all seem to disappear with a day or two. Must be the cats.

man! I need lessons from you guys on hiding yummies from the others in the house! I can never keep anything hidden...

I hide my Reese's Peanut Butter eggs in the freezer. My kids are too short to reach them and hubby doesn't have a clue.

I also stash peeps this time of year. Those are hidden in plain site because I'm the only one who'll eat them. But I open the package so they get stale. Weird.

Andes Thin Mints are hidden in my night stand drawer - always handy for that 'chocolate attack'!

I currently have a hidden stash of Cadbury Mini eggs in my dresser drawer under clean socks. I love cold chocolate but can't put it in the refrigerator or freezer as my husband would sniff them out and down the whole darn bag.

Anyone have a good suggestion for stashing Thin Mints? I am going to get some for the family but also a box to hide for myself. Like the candy, the cookies are gone in a heartbeat with my snack loving hubby. :)

I don't have a stash of anything. I've tried to, but it's gone within a couple days. Absolutely zero willpower when it comes to food. I used to buy the Little Debbie swiss cake rolls and stored them in the freezer in case if I needed a chocolate fix (thinking only in case of extreme emergency), I learned that I like them frozen, and I can go through a box in 2 days.lol I just can't trick myself...if chocolate is in the house, I know it, and can't rest until I've eaten it. :-)

Dove dark chocolate or snickers bite size dark chocolate candies...anywhere I can. My sister does a routine search of my room--trying to find new books and whatnot--so I have to move the hiding space quite often of else I'd lose all my candies.

Definitely have a chocolate stash! Mine's tucked in a corner of my closet and usually has 3 Musketeers and M&Ms :-)

I dip into the chocolate stash I get for offering in a dish at my book signings when I get desperate.

I wish I could keep a secret stash, but the problem is, if I know it is there, I'll eat it. No willpower at all....especially when it comes to chocolate. I'm impressed with people being able to stash Reese's Peanut Cups and Thin Mints...oh so yummy, and would not last long in my house.

Chocolate, chocolate, and chocolate. I keep it in one of the plastic storage drawers in the sewing room closet. I also keep the Girl Scout cookies in there (dad and I like the original shortbread), and sometimes I'll throw in some cans of Vienna sausages, just to have something quick when I need it (love those little rascals!)

Hubby irritates me when he eats all his snacks (that I don't like) and then eats mine, too. Mine last a lot longer when he stays out of them. That's the main reason I have to hide them!

The Thin Mints go directly into the freezer, and generally stay there for months and months!

Other than that, no secret stash. It just sits on the table, and when I want it, I can get it. Just having it available is therapeutic -- I don't always eat any, I just need to know it's there if I want it.

My friend & I love the Hershey chocolate Easter Eggs. Luckily they are out for a short time. She was sick last year so I went out and bought her 3 bags. I gave her one out right and then I hid 2 bags in her house. She had her husband and other friend helping her to search the house. She wanted clues and spent quite a bit of time looking. We have had so many chuckles about it over this year. I finally had to give direction clues for her to find them.
She said she was going to pay me back this year....

I put my fun size Snickers in the freezer. It takes longer to eat them that way, and I forget about them. Then when I'm rooting around in the freezer looking for something to fix for dinner, I find them... and, it's like WHOOHOO! One happy camper.

I hide Hostess Ho-Ho's in the freezer behind the frozen peas. Sometimes I forget they are there and when I move the frozen veggies it's like a big surprise. Woo Hoo! In my nightstand I have peanut m&m's for late night chocolate attacks.

I'm with Laurie - If there is chocolate in the house I know where it's at and don't forget it and must eat it. zero willpower. The only way for me to not eat it, is to not have it. So..unless chocolate is given to us around the holidays, I don't buy it any more.

Thanks for the bookmarks ladies, you are all top-notch!!!

And my secret stash is high on top of a bookcase where my grandson can't reach, only now he is learning to move things and stack them for him to climb, may have to find a new place.

The snack I crave the most right now is Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls.

I do the Thin Mints in the freezer trick as well. They last a long time in there, and then I only eat a few at a time with a cup of tea (ok, I dip them in the hot tea so the chocolate melts, ok??) Thank goodness those cookies only come around once a year. I also like the Tagalongs and the Samoas.

Now I'm having some serious cravings. For Peppermint Patties and Swiss Rolls (I love unrolling them), and frozen pizza (mmm, Stouffer's French Bread)...

I think I need to make a run to the store!

Oh, and JB! You're still getting raccoons in the house???? They definitely have to go if they're stealing your chocolate. The scoundrels.

Whoops, sorry I didn't put my name on that last comment...thinking about cookies distracted me I guess!

M&M's and Hershey's Special Dark bars... also either Andes Mints or York Peppermint Patties. Actually, neither of my parents like Dark Chocolate, so I wouldn't really have to hide those. Daddy doesn't like mint, but Mother would eat those if they were out.

I wish I could keep a secret candy stash, but I can't keep my hands off it to keep it very long! :) I do freeze girl scout cookies - it is nice to have those once everyone else is long out of them!

Stash means something different for me. I'm a knitter and I have a knitting room. My last yarn count shows enough to make about 7 sweaters and many pairs of socks, hats and scarves. Se,e it's been snowing a lot this year and the idea of being stuck with no yarn makes me crave...chocolate.

signlady217 said...

You notice where I said my stash is? In the sewing room closet; yes, right next to the fabric, scrapbooking, crossstitch,...it's all "stashed" away for when I need it!

Decorative teapot...husband doesn't even seem to see them...Lindt chocolate squares and Ghiradelli chocolate chips...heaven:)

Jess said...

Did someone say Girl Scout Cookies? Lemon Chalet Creme! Heaven in a yellow box!

I've also been known to just put semi-sweet chocolate and peanut butter chips in a dish and eat those!

I don't descriminate... if it's chocolate, I want it! I have stuff hidden behind my monitor in my office. My 10-yr-old hasn't found that spot yet! LOL

Hubby and I routinely buy the either the heart shaped reeses peanut butter cups and now it's the eggs. I share my stash. I used to stash my favorite kind of chocolate but it's only in the UK. Grr, I want my favorite chocolate. lol The company is Thorton's. Just seeing the name makes me weep.

Hi! I keep the good chocolate in the kitchen cabinet behind my cookbooks. No way the hubby - who loves chocolate snacks (or my son once he is up and about) - would even open that cabinet.
Then I put snacksized kit kats and what nots in the regular snack cabinet as a decoy.
