I'm with you, Julie. I went to The Christmas Tree Store and not one item in the place was made outside of China. Needless to say, I walked out without buying a thing. (And BTW, I went in the store in March, hoping to find some fairy (white Christmas) lights. There wasn't one Christmas item in the entire store. What gives?)

There I said it. We tend to get a lot of useless knick-knacky things that were "so cute we couldn't pass them up." Please -- pass them up. Most of them are made in China, so even if they're a souvenir from a great place -- they aren't authentic souvenirs.
I have way too much stuff as it is.

As for gifts I *would* like? A new experience, shared with friends and family. Plays, visits, restaurants...

I think all gifts are wonderful but my favorites have always been the weird little items people seem to pick up along the way..a funky vintage handbag or ethnic piece of fabric. Recently someone gave me a lovely little box with cutout flowers on it. So I guess I'd say please don't get me anything from a chain store unless it's a book.
(Do you really still use whiteout? I thought only catchers used whiteout these days.)

LOL, Laura! Yeah, they do tend to taste like boiled leaves. I drink decaf English tea. That stuff leaves you with moss growing on your teeth, but you at least know you've drunk a damn fine brew. (I prefer Typhoo--but my Aunt just gifted me with a box of PG Tips. Yes! I'm looking forward to it.)

LOL I would like to NOT receive those gift boxes of tea - you know the ones that are in a faux-wood box that you open up, and there are 30 dif varieties of fruit-flavored (and usually the useless caffeine-free) teas nicely displayed in individual cubby holes?
