Rehab Chick

by Lorraine Bartlett / Lorna Barrett / L.L. Bartlett

My name is Lorraine, and I'm a Rehab Addict. Honest, an HGTV (or DIY Network) Rehab Addict.  I don't have HGTV but discovered it several years back while on vacation. (The truth is, I only watch one network show: CBS Sunday Morning. My basic cable is exactly that:  NBC, CBS, ABC and the Weather Channel.) But my guilty secret is DVR ... my Mom has it and she's my enabler.

My most recent guilty pleasure is Rehab Addict.  Nicole Curtis is a home flipper, but not like you think. She old takes (often condemned) homes and brings them back to their former glory.  That really appeals to me. My Dad was a recycler, and he made useless things into useful things. He made furniture out of old wood pallets (the pallets were poplar). He would find broken stuff and fix it. He truly was a Jack of all trades. Sadly, I didn't inherit that gene. I love to watch Rehab Addict because Nicole does what I would LOVE to do--take things that are broken and ugly and transform them into useful things of beauty.

If you don't have HGTV, you can get your Rehab Addict fix online by watching the entire episodes, or snippets on just the subject you're interested in; like recycling lumber and other scraps, fixing broken original windows, recycling vintage cabinets, refinishing old and scruffy furniture.  Lots of fun.

Were you graced with a DIY gene?

    1. I would dearly LOVE to go to one of her open houses. You should keep checking her FB page so that you can go to the next one -- and then PLEASE report back!!!

  3. HGTV is the only reality TV I watch. I've seen this show and yes, she is compelling. My favorite HGTV is House Hunters International. I like getting to peek inside the real estate market all around the world. Fun! (and much less depressing than the news)

    1. Poor Mr. L. I've told him that I would leave him for Scott McGillvray of Income Property. But I also love the Property Brothers and Love It or List It with Hilary and David or the newer one.

  4. I'm more into 'thrifting' and vintage items: clothes, handbags, housewares, dolls, linens, decor, furniture, Christmas decor, etc..... I love to find a bargain! The THRILL of the hunt!! I'm so happy in the spring and summer with yard sales and garage sales!! I especially love estate sales!!!!! Like a kid in a candy store!

I love HGTV/diy as well: especially 'Cash or Kari', 'Flea Market Flip', 'the Property Bros', 'Holmes on Homes'. Oh, dear Lord, that Mike Holmes is a hottie!! Good Canadian boy, too! So are the Property Brothers, who hail from my town of Maple Ridge, BC! Far too young for me. lol

    1. I hear you, Laurie. Every Saturday from May through October, Mr. L and I got junking. It's usually the highlight of my week.

I must admit, I'm not fond of Cash or Kari because somebody has to die for her to have an estate sale. I love Flip or Flop, Property Brothers, and Income Property. I've warned Mr. L, I would leave him in a heartbeat for Scott McGillivray. (Come on, Scott--just say the word.)

  5. I love the show, too. Lorraine. Wish I had a DIY gene, but sadly it is missing! I remember your post about buying small tiles and using them as coasters--I bought some, added felt to the back, the way you suggested. Great idea!

  6. I don't have cable TV, but I check out a lot of this type of thing online. There are also a lot of sites that share DIY and decorating ideas on Facebook. Some that I follow are: Dusty Old Thing - Bottled Up Designs - Home Tips World - Flea Market Gardening - and Junky, Funky, Rusty and Re-purposed by Sue. There are so many cool ideas. Not all of them are things I would do or even have at my house, but they are so creative. I just need to find time to try some of them.

    1. Thanks for the tips on other FB pages with good stuff. I had already LIKED Dusty Old Thing (too bad FB never puts their posts in my newstream), but now have liked the others, too!

  7. I enjoy watching HGTV, but am not addicted, especially as I see some of the prices being outrageous. Yea a 24 year old first time home buyer with a budget of over $300,000. Please. Anyway I do NOT have the DYI gene when it comes to home repair (cooking and crafts, yes, fixing things around the house, no. Just last week or so I discovered the bathtub faucet was dripping. I figured it was just a washer or something simple, so I attempted to fix it myself. I made it much worse and wound up having to take the day off work so the plumber could come over...and charge me a fortune. Sigh.

    1. I'm always scratching my head when a young couples in Toronto has a MILLION BUCKS to invest in a home in Toronto. Are they drug dealers or something? Where do they get that kind of money??? I can fix small stuff, but not nearly as much as I'd like. Sorry to had to lose a day at work for the plumber. (Luckily we have a good plumber.)
