Is This Spring Fever?

by Kate Collins

Why do I suddenly want to throw out my comforter and shams and buy something colorful? Why does my kitchen look drab, dreary, and dull? Why does the cranberry throw on the sofa look like a fugitive from Christmas? Why am I walking around my house going, "I need color, people!"

Could it be spring fever?

"Spring fever is not a definitive diagnostic category," says Michael Terman, director of the Center for Light Treatment and Biological Rhythms at Columbia University Medical Center. "But I would say it begins as a rapid and yet unpredictable fluctuating mood and energy state that contrasts with the relative low [of the] winter months that precede it."

And what wicked winter months they have been!  Is it any wonder that spring fever may hit harder than ever this year? Hasn't this been the winter that wouldn't end?

I crave color. I thirst for the new. Dingy? Out. Bold and beautiful? Welcome, friend.

Are you feeling it, too?

  1. I definitely feel it, too! I look out the kitchen window and see the grayness, the drabness of the backyard. Some nice trees, but they're bare! I definitely need color and sunshine to brighten my mood. Spring can't be far away (or can it...)

    1. It's teasing us here in the midwest. Today it'll be 67, tomorrow low 40s. AACK!

  2. I woke up to snow again today. Will this Winter ever end? I had Spring fever but now I'm just plain depressed. LOL The forecaster on tv is singing "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas" We might get 4 inches as the snow band is moving slowly. Sigh!

  3. This is another of those years when I predict we have only the briefest spring and go directly into summer. The winter that never seems to end still wraps itself around us.

    1. Didn't that happen last year, too? Al Roker said today that this winter is a sign of what's to come because of climate change. Nothing like starting Monday off with good news!

  4. I have huge spring fever especially with the latest snow mess dumb in CT this morning. I really could use some warm weather and flowers. This winter has seemed like the longest one in history!

  5. I couldn't agree more!! Even though I painted last spring, the living room, dining room & kitchen. I want to paint it all over again. And don't get me started on comforters and painting the bedroom. I want to to do that too in the worst way!! Must be spring fever, since I can't get working outside yet (I live in Minnesota, spring is a ways away). Other then that, I've started a few things in the window sill like Sweet Potato Slips and celery from a stalk of celery. Nice to see some green anyways!! :) Hope spring comes soon for you in your neck of the woods!! :)

  6. With all the books I have in all the dry rooms in my house, there is plenty of color everywhere and I just love looking at them. But I love my new floral oldfashioned curtains I bought last year, they still make me smile and go all oooo pretty!
Today it is grey and gloomy here, and I really want to turn on all the lamps. I love bright light as I am so very night blind.

How about some minor changes, buy some new fabrics for the bed/comforter, bright and floral, I love those. A new bright piece of carpet under the living room table. Some new pillows on the couch and dining table chairs.
