What is this Duck Dynasty?

by Kate Collins

I feel like Rip Van Winkle: I just woke up after being asleep for 20 years. What the heck is Duck Dynasty? And why is it so popular?

I actually had to look it up so I'd know what it is. Here's what Wikipedia had to say:

Duck Dynasty is a reality television series on A&E. It shows the lives of the Robertson family, who became wealthy from their family-operated business, Duck Commander, operated in West MonroeLouisiana, which makes products for duck hunters, primarily the duck call named Duck Commander. The Robertson men, brothers Phil and Si, and Phil's sons Jase, Willie, and Jep, are known for their long, flowing beards.
The business began in a dilapidated family shed, where Phil Robertson spent 25 years making duck calls from Louisiana cedar trees.[1] His son Willie is now the CEO of the company.

Okay, so now I know what it is. Can someone tell me why it's so popular?

  1. I'm from Louisiana, went to high school for a couple of years in West Monroe, have relatives still living there, graduated from the college across the Ouachita River in Monroe, and STILL have no clue as to why this program is so popular! It does not represent my family ... well, okay, not *all* my family - lol! I simply can't watch it myself. Too embarrassing.

  2. I live in Baton Rouge and REFUSE to watch that show. I'm tired of people like that giving the rest of us a bad name. Plus, I wont support a show or it's cast that makes millions of dollars on devices to help kill animals. It's everything Im against. Gross.

  3. I love Duck Dynasty!!! They have family values and aren't embarrassed to show their faith to the world. Really great family show that your kids can actually watch! Terri Dunn

  5. I never thought I would like the show and I am pretty against reality TV and do not watch it. But I came across a marathon and have to say it really made me laugh! It's one of the few shows that I actually believe this is how the family interacts on and off camera. No glitz and glamor for the TV. And I love that when the station asked them to take praying while on camera they said either take us or leave us!!

  6. I'm still not sure when they work, but I watched it to see what all the talk was about. It is now my go to show when I need a chuckle or don't like what's on. I can see why it would be addictive. Also it's a show the whole family can watch. I love the way they connect with a prayer and family meal at the end of every show.

  7. I used to laugh at people who watched it but son convinced me to try it. I did and now I love it. They have such family unity. It is nice to see a "normal" family who loves one another instead of the fight and argue fests they usually are.

  8. It is about family values. It is about a family who actually like and love one another. It is about a family with a strong faith. Yes, the men have beards, and no I am not a fan of the beards. But, I am a fan of the show. They are truly funny. They are not funny by being hateful, but by being family and friends. I have seen shows about dealing with a teenaged daughter who has become more grownup than her father likes, wanting to look good at a high school reunion, teasing about who is tougher, a better fisherman, etc.

I do not hunt ducks or anything else other than good books. The show is about a family who happens to hunt and fish, and happen to like one another.

  10. I love it. There is one more brother who is a minister who is not shown on the air. The brothers are all college educated and the father played college football and when he decided he's rather hunt, Terry Bradshaw took his place as quarterback. I think they do dumb it down occasionally but they are all very family oriented.

  11. I don't often watch tv or movies. I started watching after my boyfriend insisted I sit and watch. I am hooked. I laugh out loud most of the time. I also read the biography that resently came out. It is a great book too! Duck Dynasty really is all about family, faith, and lots of laughs!

  12. I have not seen the show but they were on Katie. They are a family and seemed interesting. It seems that Country is in when it comes to Reality TV this year at least.

  13. I have been curious about this as well Kate, but it really is not tempting to me.

  14. I don't watch it and am not tempted to start. For those that like it, that's cool and I'm glad you enjoy it, it just doesn't seem to be something I'd enjoy.
