Adagio for Strings
Sometimes music defies description. In fact, I think music is one of the hardest things to capture in writing. I'm listening to a piece called "Adagio for Strings" by Barber, and I think it is one of the most unutterably sweet things I've ever listened to. It's haunted me ever since I first heard it -- even now it almost makes me cry. I have no idea why, but something about it...touches me, moves me.
And I was thinking this evening how I would try to capture it in words...the lush sweep of strings...the silken soar of wings...blech. I can't touch it.
So this morning's mission, should you choose to accept it, is describe a favorite piece of music. It's a good way to challenge those creative muscles, and as I'm away for the weekend at a Burns Supper gig, I'm in a musical frame of mind.
