I’m stuffed! Okay, I’m way past stuffed and now wonder if I’ll ever want to eat again. Eating during the holidays is like no other time. My gluttony usually starts the first Saturday in December when my mother’s family has their Christmas party. They’re Italian so besides the traditional fare we have salami, lasagna, and tiramisu. And of course we can’t forget the Chianti.
Next up is the business parties. My husband’s company takes us to a fancy restaurant and woos us with lobster and filet, while my RWA chapter has an appetizer and dessert potluck. One of our members does a divine baked brie in puff pastry with raspberry sauce.
Then it’s the homestretch, my father’s family party on Christmas Eve where my aunts vie for the title of best baker. This year there were twenty-two different kinds of cookies, and I’m proud…er…guilty to say that I tried every one. Even the ones I wasn’t crazy about were delicious. Christmas day is brunch at my mom’s—egg casseroles and cinnamon twists.
This year, just to spread things out, my husband’s family had their party on Boxing Day. We had the usual ham, sweet potatoes, etc., but since I was in charge of dessert, I end the season of eating with a bang. I made a four-layer strawberry and lime cake with butter cream frosting and green and red sprinkles. Yum!
Now that the holidays are over, maybe I’ll get back to my healthy, okay, healthier usual eating patterns. But, then again, maybe not. I just discovered that Fannie May has a website and that all its holiday candy is half price. And I have a coupon for free shipping!
