This sounds like the beginning of a food-themed blog, but for once, my mind is on slimming down. Not just losing some pounds from my own frame, but shedding unnecessary weight from every room in my house.
This is one of those weekends where my to-do list is longer than the hours in the day. Do you ever feel like you've just got to clean away some clutter before you can get another thing accomplished? That's how I'm feeling right now.
Part of my longing to pack a bunch of bags for Goodwill is that the holidays are approaching. For us, that means four sets of Christmas visitors and one set of Thanksgiving visitors. As we get closer to Turkey Day, I start seeing the house as others might see it and then my "project list" begins. For the next two weeks, it'll grow and grow and my family will try to hide.
But it's no good. I'm really for the pre-holiday clean out.
All of a sudden, that messy bookcase or not-so-sparkly-clean bathroom tile really catches my eye. The tarnished silver candlesticks look like they belong in a haunted house and there are way too many toys EVERYWHERE and my husband has just too many magazines on his desk and too many stained t-shirts in his drawers.
I've got my own issues. I tend to hang on to clothes too long, because I don't really enjoy clothes shopping. My mom has a rule: If you haven't worn it in a year, donate it. I have a hard time with that. I"ll hold up a perfectly good sweater and think, "This is nice. I might wear this." Then I don't and there it sits. Not after tomorrow! Cleaning out the closet is #1 on the list (I'm lying. Husband's t-shirts are first :) )
What about you? Is there an area in your house you want to improve before the holidays hit?
