There I was, meandering through the crafty aisles at Michael’s, taking in the ghosts, goblins, pumpkins and cobwebs while speculating if it was really early enough in the year to be putting out the Halloween stuff when lo and behold! I came across an aisle housing…houses. Christmas village houses.
Christmas décor in August.
August! Back to school items are still on the shelves. Nary a leaf has turned color nor a NFL football game (regular season) been played.
What in Kris Kringles’ name is going on?
It took a good minute, but as I stood there staring at the colorful little village pieces, I finally decided I needed to let my animosity about this phenomenon go.
The retail world is not going to put their livelihoods on hold just because of a pesky thing like a calendar. Christmas sales are often the only thing keeping smaller stores afloat throughout the rest of the year, so who am I to resent them wanting to make as much money as they can to feed their families, pay their bills, and buy a couple of extra HD converter boxes for their TVs (the change is coming!!!!!!)?
So now I will partake in the ages old philosophy of: If you can’t beat them, join them. No, I won’t be dragging my Christmas decorations up from the basement just yet, but I am going to make a roast chicken, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and butternut squash this week. Oh, and I think I’ll start a Christmas list and perhaps shop for my Christmas cards…
I’m sure I won’t have trouble finding any. Even though it’s only AUGUST.
PS: I even received presents (kind of) this week. I could get used to this.
