Oh, my friends, it’s that time. I need a new computer. Mine is four years old and has so many bugs that I’m tempted to call the Ortho man instead of the Geek Squad. I no longer have the use of spell check on emails (which is a HUGE drag even if it has improved my spelling). Whenever I open an Adobe document my computer freezes or totally crashes and I can’t load any games onto it anymore (which is good for writing, bad for mental health). The memory space remaining is so small that it can hold a novella, but not a novel.
As we are getting a new roof in two weeks, I certainly hadn’t bugeted for a new computer. In fact, we’re having the roof in lieu of a vacation (can’t afford both) so I’m already feeling a bit sour. Still, the idea of a shiny new iMac is very appealing, but I haven’t owned an Apple since college and am a little nervous.
Sure, I love the commercials. I love the small size of the hard drive. I love the slick screen. But am I smart enough, hip enough, or able to deal with change in the manner that will be required for me to “defect” from the world of Microsoft to the land of juicy apples?
Please lend me your wisdom, oh venerable Mac users out there. I’m going this afternoon to one store or the other. Should I go to the Apple store? Should I? What do you love about your iMac, iPro, iWhatever! I value your comments!

Can’t help, I’ve never been on one. But your summer sounds like mine. We had a big bill to pay this check so what does my car do, die. So now next check will be spent to get the car out of the shop and pay for the rental. So maybe August I’ll be back on budget.
Sigh….

Oh! I switched from a PC to an iBook back in 2001 and I will never go back!!! I love how my Mac doesn’t crash at least once a week (it was usually way more frequently than that). I love how smoothly everything works. I love how plug & play items are actually able to be plugged and played.

Mac.
I also switched back in 2001 after an ‘incident’ with our PC and have never looked back.
I’ve only had my Mac crash once (it was a very specific unusual problem that the Mac people were very helpful with). At most, it freezes a handful of times a year and you simply restart it - then all is good.
I’ve never had problems with software installation. Everything works exactly like it should. If there’s a snag, its fixed by the updates that come automatically to your computer (and sometimes its not a snag, its a new feature that they simply update you with). And iChat is awesome!
I’m eagerly awaiting the new iPhone as well. I could sing the praises of Macs all day, but I’ll stop now.

Mac absolutely.
When I had PCs, they crashed all the time. What a nightmare. And I keep hearing people online in my various groups peep up and say things like you. . . ‘my computer crashed’ or ‘my hard drive crashed’. Why are these always the PCs and not Macs? Hmmm.
I’ve had my iMac for nearly 7 years now. I’ve just bought a new one for myself and gave the kids my old one. They’re banging away on it (and you know how rough young kids can be!) and it’s still going strong. I’ll never go back to PCs.
Make the switch!

I went to the Apple store and was very impressed with how helpful the entire sales staff was. Along with a new laptop, you get one hour a month for one year of free consults. Go for it!

Yippee! The iMac is sitting in this room. I’ll be at one-to-one classes all summer, but I have officially defected. Thanks for giving me the courage, friends!

Wow JB. That’s great! I know nothing about Macs. Please keep us updated on how learning the new mac goes for you.

Jump in, JB. Macs and all things Apple are a joy to use. Our family had both Apple and PC waaaaay long ago when they first started. No Macs then. Apple. But even then, the superiority of the Apple was obvious.
Boy oh boy, was I heartbroken when I had to switch to PCs after divorce and I was starting over and money was a BIG problem. Macs were expensive then. But now—-I’m about ready to “return home” to Apple and Macs. I’m SO sick of these stealth Microsoft messages popping up on my PC wanting me to buy their stuff. Yuck. And all the viruses attack PCs. Enough.

Mac. No question. You won’t regret it, I promise. It’ll take you all of an afternoon to get used to it. It isn’t all that different from what you’re used to, and the important Windows software - like Office - you can get for Mac as well , so you won’t have to relearn all of that. And your Mac doesn’t have to be taught like the Windows ones - when I got a new digital camera, I just plugged it in and the Mac went “Oh, look - a new digital camera” and showed me the pictures without endless software add-ons and new drivers. Same with the new printer. And no anti-viral programs running constantly in the background, slowing you down (no adware adding itself, no spyware…no nothing that you don’t put in yourself.) If you do get a Mac, and I sincerely hope that you do, spring for the little soft plastic keyboard cover - keeps the cat fur out!

Glad you chose a Mac. If you have any questions on the technical side feel free to drop an email.

Mac! Mac! Mac!
I have worked in offices where PC’s are used and wondered if someone holding the purse strings, or counting the beans was getting a kick back for keeping computers around that would insure full time work for the IT department. I’ve never understood why the masses go en masse and not use their heads. As far as getting familiar again, Mac’s are more friendly than a Golden Retriever and more forgiving than, Hosea. We have two computers, an iBook G4 and a Mac Mini. We love them both! If you have been freezing and fuming with your PC, you owe it to yourself to go,
MAC! MAC! MAC!

Hi JB,
How’s the Mac working out for you?

MACs are not accessible, that is why offices choose to buy PC’s. We can’t support the MACs either for that reason. I wish MACs would do more for people with disabilities, but I do love my iPhone! If you are a writer and use Microsoft Word, then I would stay true to Microsoft and buy a PC. Microsoft does alot for accessibility and the Bill Gates foundation gives alot of funding to great research, Apple does not.
