We’ve been hearing more and more about people taking vacations close to home this summer (Who thinks of those fusion words, anyway? I’m so impressed– and jealous). Anyway, when my kids were little and we had no money to travel anywhere “big”, like Disney World, we always did the so-called Staycations, traveling to fun spots a mere two hours from home. It was amazing how much we were able to do, and some of my kids’ favorite memories are from those trips.
Wisconsin Dells was our all time favorite. We went back many times. Also, Starved Rock State Park in Illinois, Fort Wayne, Indiana (to see a real fort), Indianapolis, to the Children’s Museum, Kings Island, in Ohio, and of course, Chicago, to the museums, waterfront, Sears Tower, etc. So much in just a short distance.
What are your plans this summer? Are you traveling far or, like so many, keeping the gas consumption down and sticking closer to home? Are you cutting down on driving, in general? My daughter now bikes to work, which I think is smart.
Any other ways you’re cutting costs? Anyone doing more gardening? (especially with the tomato concerns).
Tell me how you’re conserving this summer.
Have a great week.
Kate, always curious

We live in a rental so our garden is small but we should have lots of tomatoes. We ate our first green beans last night.
We already had our big vacation, Las Vegas in April, but I hope that we are able to fit a couple of small weekends away. As soon as things stop breaking down and I get my budget back into control! This week, my car decided it needed a $400 part that I’ve never heard of. And with the construction business down, it’s affecting DH hours as well. So I’m trying to make leftovers serve as lunches as well as creative ways to cut costs at the grocery story.

Our Stayvacation begins next Monday. We are fleeing the house to avoid the sounds of a dozen men slapping on our new roof. The roof sapped the vacation fund so we are running for North Carolina and Grandma’s house.

No staycation for me. On Friday, I’m packing up the family and driving south to Gulf Shores. It’s not the cruise that I planned, but it’ll be good to get away from all the turmoil here at Anheuser-Busch.

We took a “stay-cation” the first week in June that our son was off of school, and have another planned for the last 10 days before he heads back. That, along with him spending a week with my sister in IN, has cut three weeks off of our summer care for him. Our first one we worked on the house - something we hadn’t done in years. We painted, shampooed the carpet, fixed leaky faucets and repaired anything that needed it. Each day we took one room and focused the whole day on that room. I feel so good now that it is done.
The house is clean and fresh and I can enjoy my summer outside. In August we will do a short trip, but since we did splurge for a Disney cruise next January, we are keeping it down to a minimum to save for that big trip.

Hmm, I didn’t know those close “vacations” had an uber hip name! I’ve been cool all these years and didn’t even know it! We’ve had a family reunion this last week-end and lots of family handed out invites for us to visit them (and I believe they actually meant it!) so we’ll probably hit a few towns this year. St Louis will be tons of fun, and with only a 6 hour drive, no hotel to have to pay for, and lots of fun stuff already planned that comes with minimal cost, I can’t wait.
We also broke down and bought a backyard pool, just the above ground sort, but it’s plenty big for all of us and then some, so even with the initial expense, we’ve saved tons that way.
The only gardening I do is flowers, but my neighbor and parents keep us stocked in fresh, home-grown veggies all summer long.

ChariDee,
While you’re in town, (St. Louis, that is) Look us up.

Hey, ChariDee,
While you’re in St. Louis, look us up.

We normally travel in the spring and fall. We went to South Carolina in April and were to go to Oregon in the fall, but now I’m not sure that’s going to happen. We have had a lot of unexpected expenses on the house, and air travel seems to be getting more and more expensive and complicated, so we’ll see. We did go to Kansas City last weekend for baseball and whatnot else. It was good to be away for a few days.
Wilfred, I assume you’re in St. Louis too? What do you think, are we going to lose the brewery? I hope not!
ChariDee, you will have a great time in St. Louis-there is so much to do and most of it is…..FREE (or have free days or times)!

Caryn,
About the brewery. Since I’m one of the many that could lose their jobs if the Belgium Company takes over, I sure hope not. I’m trying to remain optimistic, but I’m also keeping my options open. I’m just glad I don’t have to rely on my writing to earn a living.

Well, I stayed home last year and excaped to the mountains several times, which was lovely between business trips. Then I visited daughter Melissa in NYC and we went to Montreal for Labor Day.
This summer I hope to escape to mouontains in July which is hottest month. But in September I will treat myself to a European trip. First, visiting my youngest daughter Maria, who lives and works (military) in Stuttgart, Germany, then take an art tour in Florence, Italy, with a group. I need to refill the well like I did two years ago in Ireland.
