    LOST and The Riches

    Maggie Sefton Icon

Okay, I’ve finally caught up with my fave series that I taped while I was off on my travels.  I’ll only touch on two today—the two with the most going on.  And, boy, is it ever.

First on LOST:  Finally, scenes with Jack and Kate in the future.  But of course, just when it looks like things are going to be running smoothly—rocks appear on the road.  And that new villain who just landed on the island—boy is he a nasty piece of work.  The mystery keeps on, twisting and turning and taking us with it.

As for The Riches—boy, talk about one surprise after another.  Every time I think the heat can’t get any hotter beneath that fascinating grifter family, the writers turn it up higher.  And, did you see that sexual tension between Minnie Driver and Lou Gossett, Jr. last week?  I wasn’t expecting that.  That series has some of the best plotting I’ve seen since the other new show (also on fX) “Damages” with Glenn Close.  And the actors are marvelous, capturing those characters spot on.  As for plot twists—-you can’t keep track of them all.

Have any of you folks seen the latest episodes?  What do you think will happen on LOST before season close and on The Riches?

    1. I love The Riches! All the actors are extraordinary and memorable, and I am continually impressed by Eddie Izzard’s range (have you seen his stand-up in heels? In French?). And what an interesting concept–the Irish Travelers are a real phenomenon, at least in Ireland, although I haven’t seen much comment on them in this country.

    2. I’ve given up trying to second guess the writers of Lost. I’m always wrong. *g*

    3. Sheila—-Yes, wasn’t that fascinating to learn about the “Travelers” and that they originated in Ireland. Last week, they even had Acting-Nice-but-really-Bad-Ass Quinn refer to them as the descendants of Eamon Valera (famous in Irish history). Veeeeery interesting.

    4. You got it Tori. Those writers on LOST are always jerking us around and involving fascinating twists and turns. And—that’s why I’m still watching! The writing and the characters. Never boring.

You know, that’s why I get bored with so many tv shows and stop watching—the writing is SO predictable. If I can finish the line of dialogue before the character gets it out of his mouth, then I’m outta there. It’s just more “same old, same old.”

    5. Sheila—you’ve GOT to tell me where I can see Eddie Izzard’s stand-up-in-French routine in high heels. He is SO good. Where else have I seen him?

    6. The writers of Lost are one demented group. I’m thinking the new bad guy will set something in motion to destroy everybody on the island, but the season will end as it is being set in motion.

We think we know Claire will die. Funny thing is, in the future, Erin or Arron, Clair’s baby has been with Sun and now with Kate.

    7. I love Lost! It drives me crazy though because they keep me guessing every week. Just when I think I figured it out, more questions come up.

    8. Hi, Maggie! With whom I was on a cozy panel at LLC…two panels, actually, if we count the informal one with Kelli Stanley and…and my mind is blanking. Anyway, I stopped watching Lost mid second season due to time constraints and figure I’ll have some long weekends down the line to rent the DVDs and catch up. I haven’t heard of the Riches - it sounds intriguing!

    9. Wilfred & Yvonne—I agree—the writers of LOST are on another frequency entirely. They are SO clever about finding new twists and turns.

Wilfred—I don’t think that was Aaron w/Sun, it was her own baby because we got to see her being born–and it was a little girl, remember? And Sun named her the name that her husband—his name is escaping me—gave her.

So—I’m betting since we know that Claire is dead (having seen her with Jack’s long-dead dad, that Kate takes Aaron w/her when she and the other 5 get off the island. Which should be coming pretty soon, right?

What kind of thing do you think Nasty Guy will set in motion?

    10. Hey, Zhadi—glad to hear from you. Yes, you definitely have to get or rent the dvd for LOST and catch up! Because I bet they won’t air re-runs this summer bec the writers strike made everything go longer. What do you think?

by Maggie on May 10th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

    11. I’d rather watch the DVDs than try to do re-runs, but I think you’re right. And now it looks like SAG is going on strike too.
