Spring is in full swing. The trees have flowered, the daffodils have come and gone, the hyacinth’s blooms are fading. Buds are emerging on the shrubs, the grass is greening…and I’m in no mood to garden.
My yard is, well, let’s use a Sharon Short term: Unfortunate. Last year’s drought really took its toll on the grass, so it’s looking like something out of Caddyshack – but gophers aren’t our issue.
The gardens all need weeding, mulching, and overall TLC. The sheer amount of work is overwhelming, which makes me keep putting it off. The longer I put it off (and I have *every* excuse) the more miserable it looks.
Plus, there are other things I want to do. (Besides write the book due June 1st.)
Why does spring bring out the nester in me? I’d like to find time for spring cleaning, and making over the garage, and finish my attic clean-out, and maybe peel the wallpaper from the front hall, and paint the front door, and do something with the front porch, and maybe lay some tile, and paint the living room, and the master bath, and…the list is never ending.
Time, however, is limited. As is budget. Picking and choosing projects is going to hard at best. I’m thinking about putting them into a hat… It might be the only way to decide which gets done first.
Do you have any spring projects planned?

Writing. Writing. Writing. And maybe getting a little tan, too.
That’s my list.

Sounds good to me, Laura. As long as you tan safely. Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. Nag, nag, nag.

I’m hoping to convince the neighborhood that dead plants are the new trend in gardening.

Burn, burn, burn. We lost alot of trees and limbs this winter. The kids will break out the marshmallows but unfortunately, I have to help gather the sticks. Yeah, me.
Here in Southern MA, things take longer to get growing. It’s just this week been nice enough to WANT to go outside and do yard work. But, I have to be honest, I really DON’T want to go outside and do yard work. I’d rather follow in your footsteps, Heather, and clean out the many things that need cleaning. The linen closet is first….
As for household projects, our list is NEVER ending so I won’t even go there! Can you say new windows?!?!?!

I think the hat idea is a good one. Maybe I’ll make my own list and draw from a hat too. A lady I used to work with once picked the new city she was going to live in from a hat. She had graduated from college and decided she wanted to move someplace new. So, she put the names of like 5 cities into a hat and the one she chose, was where she moved and ended up working for several years. If she can do that with essentially her life, I guess it wouldn’t be a bad option to do that for house projects!

Heather, I thought I’d stop by and say “HEY”. You should have been in St. Louis this morning. You missed the big quake!
Funny thing is, I did a bunch of yard work last evening. I clipped daffodils and put them in a vase on our glass top kitchen table. I woke up at 4:36 this morning to a funny knocking sound. Then the house started to shake. At least a minute after the shaking stopped, the knocking continued. It seems the vase didn’t have a level base and it was still shaking. The water inside continued to ripple.
Now I have to get back to work.

Sheila, I like the way you think!
Ooh, Deb, I love a toasted marshmallow. Roast one for me, okay? And, thanks a lot. I’d forgotten about the linen closet…
Linda, I can’t imagine choosing a place to live from a hat. Wow. Such freedom! Must be nice. Me? I think I’ll stick to projects. The hat idea is looking better and better.

Will, I didn’t miss the quake! We felt it here in Cincinnati, too. I’m pretty sure I would have slept right through it if my alarm clock wasn’t on its second round of snooze by then. I blogged about it over on Bleeding Hearts today. I’m jealous you still have daffodils. Ours are all shriveled.

After my eyes fall out from staring at the computer screen, I plan to ruin my fingernails by mulching, weeding, and planting things that are sure to die in the predicted drought. Can’t be helped. I love a f lower…

Heather, on DIY day, (thanks for choosing my project, btw) I mentioned my love of painting. But more than painting, I’m nuts for gardening.
Problem is I live on the mother-of-all hills. Hillside gardening, you say? Well, that leads me to problem two, how to stay upright. After all, my main goal in life is to live long enough to pay back my children for the grief they’ve caused me. Sweet.
Anyhoo, my slope is seriously steep. So sheer snowboarders on meth would quiver. Not that I’ve seen many snowboarders on meth. Oh wait, I live in the Pacific Northwest, chances are I’ve seen a few.
So dh says, “Why not tie yourself to a tree like a mountain climber?”
Head slap. Why didn’t I think of that? So yesterday, I trekked to REI (How nice of them to have a climbing wall for fun. Pleezzzzeeee.)
I hesitated before buying the gear, listening to the salesperson (who’d climbed Everest btw) explain how easy the stuff was to use. Is he kidding? All those clamps and ropes and harnesses. Put an airplane in the mix and a foot to push me out the door and I’m skydiving.
But I bought the gear anyway. I’m a sucker for a knowledgeable salesperson (did I mention how blue his eyes were?)
Well, this weekend is the main event. Here’s hoping the trees are deep rooted and the clamps like tubby women. Wish me luck.

Theo’s spring plans? World domination.

JB, I hate the way my fingernails look after I garden. Even if I wear gloves, the dirt finds a way in. But, I love flowers too. It’s worth it. Right?
LOLOL, Marianne! Love your storytelling and you’re a brave, brave woman. Let us know how it goes!
Theo, why am I not surprised?

Well, my primary spring project is finishing this book due June 30th. But—I always plant my spring flowers in mid-May. It’s not safe to do it before. So I’ll do my ritual of cruising thru the garden shops and picking plants for all my gardens and pots for front yard and back yard. Then—-I’ll exhaust myself one weekend and get everything planted. Tiring—but worth it.
