Do You Have a Dream Job?

    Kate Collins Icon

When I was in second grade I wanted to be a teacher more than anything in the world. And I became one. When I was a teacher I wanted to be a mother more than anything in the world. And I became one. Twice. When I was home with my children I wanted to do something creative, so I learned how to sew, crochet, rug hook, do macrame, tole paint, cross stitch and garden, but none of them were what I wanted to do more than anything  in the world.

One day I came across an ad in a magazine for a correspondence course teaching how to write for children and teenagers. I’d always loved making up stories, and as a teacher had enjoyed teaching creative writing, so I thought, what the heck! I took the course and began to sell stories to children’s magazines. It still didn’t qualify as my dream job, however.

Then I moved into writing books, historical romances at the time, and after publishing seven of them, finally into my true love, mysteries. I love the characters of my Flower Shop series. I love making up new adventures for them. I love providing an entertaining escape for my readers. And yet…… Is it my dream job? If it is, then why am I glued to the home decorating shows on TV? Why do I pick up decorating magazines and go to new house construction sites for the open houses? Could it be there’s another dream job waiting for me out there as an interior decorator?

Or not. I’m sure it takes more than a talent for putting together a room to be a decorator. How about working with people who are way too particular? Who have bad taste? Who want all your time but don’t want to pay? Not so dreamy, I suspect. So I think I’ll stay right where I am, thanks.

Perhaps it’s human nature to never be quite satisfied with where we are. Who knows? Maybe Donald Trump has a dream job, too, like being a lumberjack. Maybe Nora Roberts would rather be working in a Hallmark store.

Do you have a dream job? If you had the money for training, limitless time, and no other responsibilities but to pursue that dream, what would you do?

    Have a great week,
    Kate

    1. I’ve always wanted to write. I still have a little book we made in 1st grade (it IS yellowed now) and I said I wanted to be a writer and a mom. We don’t have children, but I’ve finally taken the steps to realize my dream of being a writer by joining a national writers group and 2 local chapters. I attended a local conference yesterday and am pumped up to get the stories and characters out of my head (they are getting noisy in there!) and on paper. I’ve picked up many useful tips and insights into the world of my favorite authors by reading your blogs as well. So my dream is to be able to move to move to Maine (which I fell in love with on vacation last year) and support me and my husband by writing - that way we don’t have to leave the cabin when it snows!

    2. I’d be a full-time eleemosynarian with limitless funds to finance other peoples’ dream businesses. ;) Like organic truck farms and mystery bookstores and custom tailors and jewelers and…. all sorts of very cool and creative jobs.

    3. I had my dream job for almost 20 years: a librarian. But I think being retired is even better. LOL.

    4. Librarian was always my number 2 pick for a dream job. (I might have to put retirement on my list, too.) ;-0
But Dani, I’d never heard the term “eleemosynarian” before, and I think your dream job is the dreamiest yet.

    5. Well, I’m not exactly a librarian, but I am a library assistant. If I have to work outside the home, I guess I could say that working in a library is my dream job. I love working around books and occasionally getting to read them too. I have to say, though, that not having to be chained to a schedule and being able to work on my own at home some way would be a dream job for me. Either that or retirement so that my hubby and I could travel.

    6. I’m in my dream job, Kate. Writing novels fulltime is what I’ve dreamed of doing for years, and now I’m doing it. As my day job. Wow. For a life-time, I’d have to work other jobds and squeeze in time for my writing, being able to write full time IS a dream for me.

    7. I have to say, writing is pretty close to a dream job! Second choice for me: editor. :)

    8. Professional student. :)

    9. I am also a Librarian and spend a lot of time talking to other Librarians which is fun. I think the dream job would be to run a mystery book store attached to a B&B (but my wife would never go for it). I think a series of mystery books focused on an Interior Designer who is involved with a TV show could be fun. It would give you and excuse for watching TV and visiting houses. :)
