    Shows Still Missing in Action

    Maggie Sefton Icon

Okay, the Hollywood Writers’ Strike is over.  And I know it takes time to get new episodes of our favorite tv shows “in the can” as they say.  But, now I’m wondering if some of my favorites will appear at all.

Thankfully, “LOST” on ABC reappeared and started teasing us and answering questions at the same time—in its inimitable fashion.  And now, we have to wait until almost the end of April for the last four shows before the season ends again!  Bummer.

And Fox’s “24″ has yet to make an appearance.  I’m wondering if we may see Jack Bauer (sp?) this season at all.  Maybe we’ll have to wait until summer to see if Jack has found another terrorist threat to threaten mankind—or one portion of the American landscape.

At least some of my favorite “sleeper” hits have returned.  “Men in Trees” is back (ABC again) and just as engaging and realistic re: male/female relationships as before.  Plus, managing to be light-hearted and amusing and witty at the same time.

And–the surprise sleeper, “The Riches” on fX channel has returned.  I just love Minnie Driver and get a hoot out of her portrayal of the husband & wife “grifters” complete with family.  A marvelously dysfunctional, clever, talented, and screwy family of grifters who manage to walk in to another couple’s “life” and take up residence—and become addicted to the luxury.

I guess I’ll have to wait for summer for the next season of last summer’s critically-acclaimed and Emmy-nominated riveting mystery series “Damages” with Glenn Close.  Also on fX channel.  Can’t remember the younger acteress who portrayed the female lead.  BOY—-was that something!  The twists and turns kept coming and you never did figure out who killed whom until the end and then—-watched another twist occur right before your eyes.  The only thing that made it bearable was you KNEW that the fascinating story would continue.  They set it up magnificently.  I was hooked.  Can’t wait.

I have to admit, fX channel has been producing some of the more innovative series and shows.  I still remember the fascinating “Witchblade” a few years ago.  Tres cool.  Ohh, and I almost forgot “The 400.”  Was that the name?

As a writer, I’m definitely in favor of working writers fighting for their rights.  And I guess it’s a good thing to see how important other writers’ work is to millions of television viewers.  I just wish they could write faster.  <g>

What about you?  Which shows are you waiting for or enjoy the most right now?

    1. Hurrah for The Riches! Eddie Izzard has had an interesting career as a comedian, but he handles drama suprisingly well. And I think we as mystery writers can take a page from the series’ book: there is a constant tension built in. Will the ruse be uncovered? Who will point the finger? Keeps you coming back for more, doesn’t it?

    2. Moonlight.
      NCIS.
      Ghost Whisperer.
      Numb3rs.

And I keep hoping Blood Ties gets back on Lifetime too.

    3. I admit it, I’m addicted to TV….and books. I couldn’t bear the thought that I’d be without my TV shows for the duration of the strike, BUT since I’m a writer (aspiring), I was rooting for those on strike. So I turned to more books (hubby didn’t think it was possible) and a couple of new addictions: “Reba” reruns on Lifetime - I have gotten a lot of laughs out of that one; the other is more nostalgic - “Mission Impossible”. Two stations are showing those reruns and they are fun to watch. I certainly didn’t remember that Leonard Nimoy was on that show before he became Mr. Spock! The first time he cracked a smile as Paris on MI took me aback. I had just watched an old “Star Trek” recently where he had no emotions.
Can’t wait for “Ghost Whisperer” to come back, as well as NCIS. At least my Monday shows on CBS are back!

    4. I am not a true television person, also, no cable, so while I felt for the striking writers, I did not miss the television shows. However, I did discover the comedy, “Three and a Half Men” reruns on a local channel. I fell in love with this irreverent, sort of trashy television show.

    5. 24 won’t be back until January 2009. *sigh*

    6. You are dead on, Sheila. Oooooh, and speaking of dead on, how about that dead body in the trunk? Wonder how they’ll dispose of the body?

You are SO right about the constant tension—never lets up. You’re rooting for them and something or someone shows up to constantly throw a wrench into things.

What did you think of the previews for this weeks? Looks like Wayne/Doug is really pushing his natural con man abilities to the limits. And didn’t you love Minnie Driver making everyone in car including kids and her 91 yr old mom sing out loud the old Janis Joplin hit “Me and Bobby McGee.” Love it.

    7. Okay, update me on Moonlight and Blood Ties–blurb style like back of book. They didn’t make it onto my radar. I remember watching NCIS years ago when it first came out then lost interest for whatever reason. Same for Numbers. I gotta fall for the characters right away.

by Maggie on March 25th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

    8. Allison—Oh my gawd! I forgot Leonard Nimoy was on MI. At least 100 years ago, right? I was a COMMITTED Trekkie back then. Didn’t miss an episode and that was hard to do because we didn’t have VHS to tape back then. If your butt wasn’t in the chair in front of the tv on that night, you missed it. Back in those days, I was known to interrupt long-distance phone calls to get to the tv on time—when those familiar strains.

No—I wasn’t obsessive about Star Trek. Not a bit. Really. :)

by Maggie on March 25th, 2008 at 6:34 pm

    9. You know, Vannie, it’s fun to kick back and just laugh at something funny–whether it’s trashy or whatever. I remember when I discovered Larry the Cable Guy late one night while channel surfing. I see the darnedest stuff that way. The later it gets, the weirder. Well, I saw this funny looking guy with this funny high pitched voice and that accent and paused. And then I started laughing. And laughing. I kept saying out loud, I don’t believe I’m laughing at this, because it was SO politically incorrect and outrageous—–still it was funny as hell.

by Maggie on March 25th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

    10. Tori—You are KIDDING me, I hope. No “24″ for nearly another year??? How. . .how will the United States survive? What if a mad bomber strikes? Or a terrorist with lots of psychological baggage? I dunno, folks. . .we may be in a lot of trouble.

      Waiting for Jack. :)

by Maggie on March 25th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

    11. Marissa—that message above was meant for you asking about those shows. Also, Ghost Whisperer. I remember a snippet of previews.

by Maggie on March 25th, 2008 at 6:41 pm

    12. Marissa - Have to say I agree with your line up. Although I also love Medium. I’ve been filling my time with Project Runway and now Top Chef. Bones is suppose to start new this month and Hell’s Kitchen is back.

Blood Ties was surprisingly good. But The Riches, now that was priceless. I got to really like the Unit since Jim watches it. I also loved Journeyman but I’m thinking it won’t be coming back.

by Lynn on March 25th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

    13. Blood Ties and Moonlight are more the ‘paranormal’ than mainstream.

Moonlight centers are Mick St. John, a vampire PI who lives in LA. Yeah, I made puns too. He’s the ‘human’ vampire who likes to save those he used to snack on. (It doesn’t hurt he’s attractive either)

Blood Ties is loosely based off of the Blood Books by Tanya Huff. The PI is Vicki Nelson, one time homicide cop who had to turn in her badge because of a degenrative eye disease (disorder?) that had her loosing her sight at a pretty steady clip. Enter Henry Fitzroy, bastard son of Henry VIII and vampire, as a sometimes partner, sometimes lover, and general smart alack. Add in Mike Celluici (I’m pretty sure I’m misspelling his name here, I can’t spell Italian names to save my life) who was her partner and is her sometimes lover and another smart alack, who doesn’t do well with things he cannot see in the day to day realm, it’s pretty good.

Ghost Whisper is with Jennifer Love Hewitt and she talks to ghosts/spirits and tries to help them cross over. It’s cutesy and usually predictable, but it is entertaining.

All of them are entertaining I think, and a good break of reality.

    14. I’m obsessed with Dexter. I’ve pretty much watched two seasons in four weeks! I also love the Tudors on SHO. These new series are edgy and extremely well acted,

by JB on March 26th, 2008 at 7:17 am

    15. Maggie, this is a day late, but apropos. In speaking about Leonard Nimoy yesterday, I’d forgotten he and I share a birthday - today! There is a 34 year difference in our ages, but I saw some photos of him online recently and he’s still pretty good-looking. And he’s quite the photographer - has a gallery, as well.

What did we do before the days of VCR’s (and now DVD recorders and Tivo)??? Made sure we were home for our shows! :-)

by Allison on March 26th, 2008 at 9:41 am

    16. Lynn—Journeyman—I’m trying to bring back a a brief memory. What’s it about?

by Maggie on March 27th, 2008 at 12:58 am

    17. Okay, Marissa—you’ve really got me interested in the two vampire ones—Blood Ties and Moonlight. When are they on and what channel, do you remember? I don’t know how I could live without my VHS. I hope they don’t stop making the technology. Then I’d have to pay the cable company ever time I wanted to record something. And since that’s ALL THE TIME, because I travel so much. Taping is SO much easier.

by Maggie on March 27th, 2008 at 1:02 am

    18. JB—Well, I’m usually all in when it’s something historical (after all, I wrote historicals for years and years before mysteries), but I don’t get HBO or Showtime, so I’ll miss that one. But the Tudor period was fascinating indeed. Talk about bloody intrigue.

Oooooo, speaking of Tudors—-I saw The Other Boleyn Girl in theatres a couple of weeks ago. Excellent acting.

by Maggie on March 27th, 2008 at 1:05 am

    19. Allison—-Interesting about Nimoy and his photo gallery. have you seen a website or something?

by Maggie on March 27th, 2008 at 1:07 am

    20. Journeyman was the story of a SF newspaper columnest who starts traveling in time and fixing problems. Kind of like Quantum Leap but Dan doesn’t know why he was a traveler. His wife finally believes him but he gets them in all kinds of trouble, like changing his son into a daughter, bringing a killer into his home 20 years later, learning why his dad left the family and meeting up with a fiance who he thought was killed in an airplane crash.

Awesome characters, great plot line, and lots of supporting cast. I’ll miss it.

by Lynn on March 27th, 2008 at 6:51 am

    21. Wow. . .you sold me, Lynn. When’s this series on? Please don’t say HBO.

by Maggie on March 28th, 2008 at 10:14 am

    22. I am not really a big TV gal, but I did get totally addicted to “The Tudors” on Showtime and now I am anxiously awaiting the Season 2 premiere, which should be this Sunday. I do realize that the writers of this series have definitely taken some liberties with history, my husband and I still absolutely love this show.

by Cathy on March 28th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

    23. Maggie,

I’ve been waiting for Desperate Housewives. Heck, even the DH Yahoo Groups I’m on sent a reminder that it was supposed to be back tonight (technically last night now), but it didn’t happen. Won’t be until Mid April now, I think. And dang it, Kyle XY won’t be back until next year. I hate it when ABC Family does that! I’m also looking forward to CSI, Without A Trace, Medium (although I’m not happy with it so far this year), and Ghost Whisperer.

Lynn, I tried to get into Journeyman, really I did…but I just couldn’t. All I could think of when I watched was “If this is what they wanted Qantum Leap to be like if it had continued, no wonder the producer/creator told them to take a hike”. But I do admit I’d like to know how it ends. I hate being left hanging.

by Traci on March 30th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

    24. We can blame all the delays on the writers’ strike—but remember! We’re writers, so as hard as it is as viewers to wait, those writers are paying the mortgage just like we are.

I thought DH was coming on earlier. See. . .I’m getting confused. Also—when is Journeyman on? I’d like to give it a try.

by Maggie on April 1st, 2008 at 2:23 pm

    25. Maggie,

Look for DH on April 13. Not sure if Journeyman is coming back. I’d actually like it to because I want to see how the season ends at least…but like I said..if it’s anything like they wanted Quantum Leap to be if it had continued, I understand why the creator/producer told them to take a hike.
