    Sleepless in Cincinnati

    Heather Webber Icon

Before I forget, the page is up for the MS walkathon I told you about last week. To join the walk or to sponsor Team MSketeers (of which I’m a proud member), go here.

Now back to my regularly scheduled blog:

As a write this, it’s Tuesday morning, and I’m foggy and groggy and not happy.

A nasty head cold has been sweeping through our house, picking us off, one by one. I’m the latest casualty.

Last night at bedtime I found myself unable to breathe out of my nose, which inexplicably makes me feel claustrophobic; I decided to take two Sudafed.

I knew I was taking a risk. If (a big if) I could get to sleep before the Sudafed kicked in I’d most likely be able to sleep the whole night through. But if not, I was destined to a night of tossing and turning since Sudafed is a notorious stimulant (aka, a keeper-upper).

Luckily, I did get to sleep before it kicked in. Unluckily, I woke to pounding rain around 11:45 and couldn’t get back to sleep.

I’m sure we’ve all been there at some time or another. The tossing, the turning, the fluffing the pillows, the staring at the clock, the thoughts of sleep, sleep, sleep.

By 1:00 I figured I ought to get up and work. By 1:05 I thought I’d give sleeping another try. By 1:30 I thought I really ought to get up and be productive. By 1:35 I realized how warm and cozy my bed was…and how my office was not.

I tried just about every trick, but nothing worked. Eventually the Sudafed wore off (thank goodness) and around 3:30 I was able to nod off. Only to wake at 5:30 to my alarm.

Hence the groggy and foggy and unhappiness. Oh, and I woke not being able to breathe out of the left side of my nose. Joy. Fortunately, I knew just what I could take that would clear my congestion…and help me stay awake.

Anyone have any tricks to get back to sleep they want to share? Just in case this happens again (no, no, please no!)?

    2. Theo, you’re cranky this week. Not getting enough sleep?

    3. I’m taking notes too, Heather. I’m not a good one for advice on sleep! =:)

    4. When I have a cold….as I do right now…I swear by DayQuil and NyQuil. No tossing and turning when you’re in a comatose state.

My hubby swears by the TV. When he can’t sleep he turns on the tube and before he knows it, it’s morning. At least he goes in the living room so I don’t have to listen to it.

    5. My advice…. meditation CDs played low. Nature sounds, slow piano, whatever you like, as long as it’s not “lively” and you’ve used it to relax in the past. Works every time.

Either that, or Ambien. Watch out for the hallucinations.

    6. Poor you, Heather. (Ignoring the cranky Theo)

I take the generic form of Benadryl for any sinus problems/cold symptoms and that *usually* works to help me breathe and puts me to sleep. If not, as Marissa suggested, I head for the Ambien (10mg), and I’m out like a light in about 20-30 minutes.

Hope you get some rest tonight!

PS- It’s snowing here in East Texas.

    7. LOL, Laura, I know. Sometimes I’m not sure how you function. If I get less than 7 hours, I’m cranky about it.

Deb, since Monday I’ve resisted Sudafed at bedtime and have been taking NyQuil. It helps me to sleep but does nothing to help with congestion since they took the good stuff out of it.

I’m just hoping this cold goes away soon (as I sit here, still can’t breathe out of the left side of my nose, with 2 sudafed in me. grrr). It’s a hanger-on.

by Heather on March 7th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

    8. Marissa, I hadn’t thought about CDs (no CD player in the bedroom), but it would definitely be worth a try if this happens again! I’ve been warned away from Ambien, so I think I’d be too chicken to try that.

Thanks, Texas Lynn. My biggest complaint with this cold is the congestion, and they took the good congestion stuff out of the Benadryl too (darn Meth makers!)! Otherwise I’d definitely be taking it–that stuff knocks me out.

I’ve been sleeping pretty well despite the cold, so I’m considering myself lucky.

    9. By 1:00 I figured I ought to get up and work. By 1:05 I thought I’d give sleeping another try. By 1:30 I thought I really ought to get up and be productive. By 1:35 I realized how warm and cozy my bed was…and how my office was not.

So I’m not the only one who does this back and forth when I can’t sleep. :) When I was getting divorced, I had a problem staying asleep. First I woke up at 5, then 4, by the time I started getting up at 3, my secretary brought a bottle of Melaton in and put it on my desk. I was driving everyone crazy. One week taking that stuff and I was back to 8 hours and my staff was estatic.

I’m fighting off the cold/flu stuff. I don’t feel sick yet, just yucky.

by Lynn on March 8th, 2008 at 8:39 am

    10. Oh, Heather. I feel for you. I have two suggestions, and though the first one isn;t so pleasant, I know it helps me.

First, for congestion, I take Buckley’s cough syrup. Yes, it’s that horrible stuff that tastes & smells like melted Vicks Vap-o-Rub. Used to be hard to find in this country, but lately I’m seeing it in CVS & Rite Aid. Tastes beyond terrible, but boy, it cuts through congestion like nothing else on the planet.

Now, for sleep. I use a trick I picked up from a friend. Go to Bath & Body (oh, the hardship - maybe as a reward for taking some Buckley’s ) - and get some of their sleep mist. it’s a lovely lavender and chamomile blend that you spritz on the pillow before you go to bed. They also sell it as a lotion, etc. It’s a very soothing scent, totally calming and relaxing. I find I fall asleep more easily since I started using it, and sleep deeper. My big hope is that I’ll come to associate the scent with sleep, so when I travel, all I have to do is spritz the hotel pillow, and I’ll have an easier time heading off to dreamland.

      Hope you’re feeling better now!

by kris on March 8th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

    11. Lynn, I hope you fight off the yuckies! I’m going to look up Melaton. My oldest has the worst time with sleep…

LOL on the hardship of Bath & Body, Kris! What a great idea about the hotel, too. I’ll have to try it. Certainly can’t hurt. Buckley’s on the other hand, might. I don’t do well with cough syrup. But if I get really desperate… I’ll give it a try.

Thanks for the tips, everyone! Today is day six of this miserable cold, and I’m doing better. Still can’t breathe quite right, but my throat is much better. Baby steps, right?

by Heather on March 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

    12. All those cold & flu meds do the same thing, I think. The Tylenol ones I’ve been taking for the nasty flu keep waking me up every two hours. Yuck.

by Maggie on March 10th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

    13. Heather, one thing that makes me sleepy is computer games…especially Bookworm Deluxe and Bejeweled 2 Deluxe. I don’t know why, but I want to fall asleep when I play those games. Hope that helps.

by Traci on March 11th, 2008 at 2:22 am

    14. Heather,

While I have no special tricks for going to sleep other than reciting the states and their capitols (a 7th grade test from the fabulous 50’s), it always puts me to sleep.

I do want to congratulate you for mentioning MS Walkathon; we need all the PR we can get, thanks!

by Beverly on March 11th, 2008 at 2:49 pm

    15. Maggie, I hope you’re doing better. Last time I had the flu (about 10 years ago, TG), it lasted two full weeks and ended with a ruptured ear drum. Not fun. Hang in there!

Traci, you know I’m all for playing computer games! The thing is, my computer is a diva. I think if I had to wait for it to load in the middle of the night, that might be the thing to get me back to sleep! LOL.

Beverly, my gosh. I wonder if I’d be able to remember all 50 states and capitals! It’s worth a shot. The sheep were useless! As for the walk–I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a cause that needs so much more attention. Every little bit helps!

by Heather on March 14th, 2008 at 10:58 am

    16. Heather, I DON’T remember all the states and their capitols, that’s the beauty of falling asleep before I can admit it to myself.

As a card-carrying member of the MS Society, we keep on truckin’, and appreciate any help we can get. The MS Walk brings a lot of attention to the cause, thanks again for mentioning it!
