Do you suffer from Valentines Day anxiety?
Do all those red heart-shaped candy boxes stacked near the check-out counter in every shop in town make you groan? Do you fantasize about nailing Cupid to the nearest wall using one of his own arrows?
I’m betting that you’re dreading Valentines Day because: a) you don’t have a date or significant other; b) you can’t stand the commercialism of this manufactured holiday; or, c) you can’t get into your favorite restaurant because of the crowds. Well, have I got a fix for you: Have an Anti-Valentine’s Day celebration.
1. Invite other single friends over to make pizza and popcorn and watch a favorite TV show or movie together. Since Valentine’s Day falls on Thursday this year, have a LOST party.
2. Rent a movie that celebrates NOT being in a relationship. “Sleeping with the Enemy,” and “My Best Friend’s Wedding” come to mind.
3. Make yourself an Anti-Valentine Day bouquet of dried flowers/stems/twigs from your backyard.
4. Order an actual bouquet of flowers and have them delivered to yourself. It will look cheerful on your table and your neighbors will be impressed.
5. Buy some cute little Valentine cards, pour yourself a glass of wine, get comfy on the sofa, and write cherry little notes inside, then drop them off at your local nursing home.
6. Sponge paint or stencil a drab wall. You’d be surprised how fun it is. Instructions can be found on the DIY website. Kits are available at hardware stores, too.
7. Write a children’s story. Use your imagination and think back to what you loved to hear as a child. You can even illustrate it. Go ahead and try it. No one has to see it but you. Have fun!
8. Curl up with your favorite mystery and a cup of hot chocolate and read all evening.
9. Pamper yourself with a warm bath and lighted candles.
10. Do something that makes you happy.
Remember, you can be perfectly content by yourself, and you can be terribly lonely in a relationship. The one thing that’s constant is you.
Have any other suggestions on how to hold an anti-holiday celebration? I’d love to hear them.
Enjoy the week,
Kate

I always want more. I guess I’m like the character on Gray’s Anatomy. Pick me, Choose me, Love me. But then run away when it happens. So just like Christmas, I’m the one waiting for Santa Claus.
Best Valentines was from Sociopath Ex Boyfriend who turned out to be hiding from the law by changing his name and not registering as a sex offender. But I got flowers, candy and a dinner out and I bought a red sequined dress off a guy in a gay bar later that night. True story. Unfortunately.
This year, VD is right before a big dart weekend so although I got BF card and candy we probably won’t do anything big. Maybe pizza. But don’t make it in the shape of a heart, please…..

OMG, Lynn. I hope you put that experience into story form.

I’m trying to figure out a way to get it down. I’m looking at the Trues. “My boyfriend used me as a cover for the police?” Or “That dress looked better on him than me.”

Lynn,
The second one, definitely. What a riot! Ha.
-
Lynn, LOL on “That dress looked better on him than me.” One of the Trues would definitely snap that up!
I’ve been lucky–no Valentine disasters here. But I do prefer quiet V-days. No big hoopla, because I’m a firm believer that love is in the little everyday things, not the big spectacular once-a-year events.

D.) Your spouse is in Baghdad and you’ve got an evening with the dog and Comcast cable as your date.

Marissa, yours qualifies for number one. My d-i-l is there, too.
Prayers.

I like 8, but your idea for #5 would really make a difference to some folks. Not a bad idea to suggest to my son’s school…hmmm. Thanks for the great list, Kate!

Thanks for these suggestions, Kate. I’ll be alone on Valentine’s Day, but I bet you already knew that. (Gee, I wonder how?
) Anyway, I’ll probably use one of those…but I’m also thinking of spending the time making up a list of different ways to kill Cupid.

Traci, if you get that list made, post it here. Love to see what your creative mind comes up with. Let’s see, you could pluck his wings…..
-
Kate, you read my mind….Plucking his wings is at the top of my list….feather by feather….then the actual wings get pulled off his tiny body.
Will come up with more later.
