    January Energy Still At Work

    Maggie Sefton Icon

That January energy gave me another swipe before it left.  This time it had nothing to do with changing directions, new novels, or new course corrections.  Nope.  This time it was something much simpler and easier to achieve.  New Furniture.

I’d been living with the same old living room furniture for several years since my divorce.  It wasn’t new by any means.  It was still good, but. . .it was beginning to show its age.  Frankly, I’d been so busy these last ten years starting a whole new life and re-creating my writing career, I barely noticed.  Well. . .this January, I noticed.  And decided I wanted something new.  In fact, I wanted several new things.

That’s when I discovered another wonderful thing about January:  January furniture sales!  Wow!!  Talk about deals.  They were everywhere.  I had a blast checking out furniture stores.  I found a wonderful cocoa brown sofa that I loved AND a new wood and glass sofa table. . .and. . .while I was at it, I decided to ditch the old sound system and get a new one.  Fantastic.

Now, when I walk down the stairs and glance into the living room, I see a whole new look.   And I love it.  Sometimes, we just have to change things around in our homes and in our lives.   It brings in a new energy.

What about you folks?  What have you changed since the New Year began?

    1. Isn’t it an amazing feeling? When I got divorced, my ex took the bedroom furniture except for a dresser and a night stand so since I couldn’t get the day bed in my room (wouldn’t fit through the door and I didn’t know how to get it apart, I was sleeping on a mattress.

So one day I went and bought a new mattress set, found an old frame at a thrift store and bought the bedding I wanted, not a compromise or what he wanted. I loved my new bed room. It was girly and frilly and just want I needed to feel good again.

Now, changes since the new year? Hummm. I’ve sent out four essays. I put myself up for a promotion at work, now I have to study for the test. And I’m on a diet plan. I was going to say trying, but Yoda say No try, Do. Or was that Mr. Miati?

Congrats on the new room! It sounds perfect for a relaxing evening with a cup of tea.

    2. Are you kidding? I spent January finishing my book to be handed in February 1st. It’s now February 5th and my Christmas tree (artificial) is still standing in my family room, taunting me.

      Oy.

    3. Maggie,

Be careful! Now that you’ve started changing things, it’s very hard to stop. Buy a new sofa and chair and then you have to have things to go with them. Then, of course, the wall color is all wrong. Which leads to new window treatments. Which leads to a huge Visa bill! AAACK.

    4. My Gawd, Lynn—you put the rest of us to shame with your January Energy accomplisments! Four essays out the door, applying for new job promotion w/test, and starting a new diet (or returning to old one like the rest of us). Wow!!! You go, girl! You’re fantastic. You’ve sent out all sorts of good energy into the Universe. Let’s see what happens.

Oh—-it was Yoda who said: “Do, or do not. There is no try.” Savvy little sage, Yoda.

    5. LOL, Lorna. I’d say you have your priorities in the right order, girl. I remember the advice I heard at a writers conference way back in the late ’80s from a successful writer. She said she made a “choice” to be a novelist. And that means finishing novels. And in order to do that, she had to make other choices. One one: she could either have a clean house or a completed novel. She chose the novel. Use the dead tree for firewood starter.

    6. I hear you, Kate. But fortunately, the curtains I bought last year for liv rm windows still go w/this sofa. And I simply rearranged one of my antique tables so it is now a lamp table at one end of sofa. It’s amazing how small changes can still make a huge difference.

    7. The layout of desks in my (fifth grade) classroom. I consulted the children about whom they wanted to work with, and told them I’d try to arrange things so that everyone had at least one or two people in their groups they were happy to work with…so instead of rows they are now sitting in groups. They are happy about it (so OK, there are a few teething problems) and it has led to far more co-operation and happy working together.

    8. Boy, Rudolf, I think you’re on to something there. You’ll have to report back if there’s an increase in brainstorming or creative ideas. What with all that “synergy” going on in the groups, it’s got to happen.

    9. Maggie, I love getting new furniture and the energy that comes with it. Not fond of the bills, though… Congrats on the new decor!

    10. Thanks, Heather. Thanks to the January sales, the bills weren’t bad at all. Let’s hear it for sales!!
