This will be an extremely short post as I must spend today standing watch over my young cat. His leg was crushed by something on Thursday afternoon and he dragged himself home and collapsed just inside the cat door. I fought against panic and managed to get him to the vet and on Friday he had emergency orthopedic surgery in order to secure his broken femur together. He was supposed to spend the weekend boarding at the vet’s but I figured he’d recover better in a crate at home and have been hanging out with him much of the day whilst shooing my children away.
It’s interesting to me how people have reacted to my telling them how upsetting this incident has been for me. I actually have had women I’m friendly with ask me why I’d spend the money providing surgery for a cat. (In other words, why didn’t I just put him to sleep!) When I tell them that Leo’s a member of our family, they kind of look at me as though I had a screw loose, but I’m fine with that. I’d never regret giving up some other goodies like a new TV or washing machine to save the life of this sweet, innocent, and giving animal.
Thanks to two incredible vets, Leo is going to be fine (after a month locked indoors, Lord save us!) and I have to take this space to express my gratitude to people everywhere who care for animals. If two such folks hadn’t been willing to rearrange their schedules (along with my babysitter who physically left in the middle of a class in order to watch my daughter so I could speed off with my agonized animal) then our outcome wouldn’t have been so happy.
I bet when you all think about it–someone has gone out of their way to help you this week.
How about telling us who they are and what they did and we’ll host a public thank-you for the people who gift us with a little laughter, hope, healing, and friendship. I’d like to thank Dr. Riley, Dr. Buck, and Sarah (for blowing off her education for an afternoon).

People who believe animals are as precious as humans have a very special gift. Those who can’t understand that seem somehow lacking to me. I guess I’ve become a true Pantheist at heart.

JB, so glad to hear your cat received such good & speedy care after the accident! It must’ve been truly scary and heartwrenching for you when it happened. Our pets really are family members, aren’t they?
Years ago we had a similar incident happen to our fuzzy gray cat, Jeb.(Named, coincidentally, for Jeb Stuart, who you probably know was the famed General in the Confederate Cavalry, who died in battle on the outskirts of Richmond) Our vet asked if he could try some experimental surgery on Jeb’s leg and they kept him for 6 wks. at no extra charge for kenneling. Jeb became the gimpy-legged mascot of the vet’s office and came home to the farm to live out the rest of his days as the commanding little general he always was.
As for being grateful to someone this week, I’d hafta give a big shout-out to our friend James, who came out in the freezing rain to crawl under the house and fix our hot water heater. (DH’s bad back had just flared up again and he was unable to do it himself.) I’m also grateful to Linda Ellerbee for keeping me amused for several nights with her wonderful book Take Big Bites: Adventures Around the World and Across the Table. It’s a great read!
BTW, speaking of veterinarians, I made one a character in my current WIP!

JB, you’re talking to a person who took her hamster to the vet. Twice. So I know where you’re coming from with regard to family pets.
I hope your kitty heals quickly and doesn’t give you too much grief about being cooped up!

JB- Hugs to you and your kitty. I hope everything goes well in his recovery.
And as far as being grateful, I have lots to mention, but first a little background. This was the first anniversary of finding out about the Breast Cancer. So I’ve been a little freaked all week. Not to mention that my sed rate is up (which can be a problem with cancer as well as my arthritis). So Tuesday was my first annual mammogram. And after two tries, I was called into the consulting room by the radiologist. Flashbacks rolled through my mind. But he was there to let me go, there was no sign of the cancer returning.
My graditude goes to my long standing boy friend, SO , fiance, whatever I call him because he rode this entire year out like a champion including shaving his head when my hair fell out due to the chemo. Thanks Jim.
So now I have to go cry in relief that finally, I can say I’m a survivor.

Oh poor kitty.. We have 5 little dogs, three cats, 2 parakeets, and those are just the inside critters. They are members of our family. Then of course there are the outside ones we adopted, all the birds, squirrels, & 2 stray kitties we feed. The opposums, raccoons, groundhogs, and the deer are on their own unless the winter gets too harsh. I had to take my little dog to see a “canine cardiologist”. ( I still can’t say that without smiling.) She has an enlarged heart. We give her a pill three times a day and she is a normal dog. We have had her for an extra 8 1/2 yrs. thanks to our wonderful vet and those pills. Everyday with her is a blessing from God.

Heather,
I am proud of you for taking the hamster. What could you tell your kids if you didn’t?!

Lynn,
You are amazing! I am so glad that your test went so well. I have a good friend who had the same test on Monday. I can’t imagine how terrifying that must have been for you booth. Jim sounds like he’s worthy of praise and he is blessed to have you as well. Stay well, my friend!

Oh, JB…..your poor kitty. I’m so glad you’re taking such good care of him. He’ll heal so much faster that way. Give him a pat for me. And ignore those others.

Bless you for taking such wonderful care of the kitty. There is something very wrong with people who can’t understand how important our pets are to our families.

JB- hope the kitty is faring well. Wishing you and kitty and speedy recovery. I know the looks that you are talking about when you say that you have done something for your pet. We have spent over the past few months thousands of dollars trying to determine what is wrong with our 7 yr old cat Taja. She has troubles with her eyes, and we have no rhyme or reason to say what is causing it. Her inner eyelid just swells shut and gets all red and sort of teary. We are now scheduled to go to a Feline Allergist. They are going to take her for 10 days and see if she is allergic to something. Our girls are indoor girls because when we adopted them from the shelter they were all four paw declawed, so they only outside time they get is on our second floor deck that is kitty proof (since Tara took a flying leap off of it once). You should have seen the look my boss gave me when I said that I was taking a vacation day to take my cat to the allergist. Never even knew there was such a thing as a feline allergist - located at the Feline Health and Wellness Center outside of Chicago, when they do all sorts of things to our feline friends to promote health and wellness.
Best of luck to you and kitty - keep us informed.

Plus the month after I got her she fell out the window…LOL. Seriously, she never goes outside and her favorite napping place in the summer is laying in the bathroom window. I woke up one fine June morning to find the bathroom screen laying in the backyard and Tara gone. Thank God she waited in the back bushes for me to come find her. I figure she saw another animal in the yard and pressed on the screen enough that it let go. Needless to say the screen was super-secured after that!
Guess Taras of the kitty variety are jumpers!

Melissa - how funny. I did name her for Gone With the Wind. She is quite a jumper. She has gotten off of our 2nd story deck more times than I care to count. She just runs around to the front door and waits on the front porch for us. She can jump from the floor to the top of our fridge and she tight-rope walks along our shower doors when we are in the shower peeking down at us, swatting at the water, howling at us. One time she fell in the shower, and she did not like that at all.
Take care!!
