    At the Movies–January 2008

    Maggie Sefton Icon

Okay, I just have to share about a couple of movies I’ve seen.  I  didn’t see many flics over the holidays while visiting but I tried to catch up when I returned.  I’ll go from “light” to “heavy.”

For fun and lots of laughs, DAN IN REAL LIFE, delivers.  Lots of laughs, of course, but poignancy too.  Steve Carrell is great.

For even more laughs (and marvelously witty dialogue), go see CHARLIE WILSON’S WAR.  What a hoot.  And, it’s true.  Only in America.  :)  The script is by Aaron Sorkin who wrote the “West Wing” tv series.  His dialogue is so funny and witty and has so many one-liners, you probably need to rent it to reverse back to catch them all. I actually saw it twice w/different folks.

THE WATER HORSE is a totally charming & cute (but not cutesy) family movie.  Sweet story.  And the computer graphics are so good, you’ll swear that’s how “Nessie” got in the Loch.

THE GOLDEN COMPASS has lots more action and adventure than most kid’s flics.  I went w/my granddaughter and daughter over the holidays and we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

Now, for more serious stuff—THERE WILL BE BLOOD has one of the most mesmerizing performances ever.  Of course, I’m a huge fan of Daniel Day Lewis anyway, but he’s really outdone himself this time.  You litterally cannot take your eyes of his character.  You’re afraid you’ll miss someething.  Plus, the director did a masterful job of building and ramping up the suspense.  Even the music was unusual and compelling.

But I must say—-I have to agree with the Golden Globes.  ATONEMENT gets my vote for best picture.  I just saw it last night, and it is magnificent.  Visually, of course, but the acting and the storyline and the way the director handles it all.  Compelling doesn’t do it justice.  The entire movie just sucks you in and holds you until the end.

Anyone else seen any of these flics?  What did you think?  Let’s hear it—-

    1. Hi Maggie,
I love your movie reviews. I have not been to see any movies lately, so maybe this weekend I will get out to see one of them. It is hard to pick, but I’m thinking it might be Charlie Wilson’s War. Love Tom and Julia…how can you go wrong with that combo?

    2. Sweeney Todd was great. Johnny Depp did a great job as the Demon Barber

    3. My husband and I get out to the movies about once every three or four months, so when we go we try to pick something that is going to be worth our time and our money. Over the holidays, we managed to find some time to see “The Bucket List” with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. We wanted to see National Treasure. We are so glad that National Treasure was sold out and we got the chance to see this wonderful movie. The story is moving and covers a wide range of topics and emotions. It is a comedy, drama, romance and even a bit of a musical all wrapped into one. We walked out of the theater and both said that movie was in our top five of best movies ever. It touched us that much. So few movies do that anymore. We highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

    4. Linda—Tom and Julia were great together. So funny. I promise you’ll laugh out loud lots of times.

    5. Marissa—Absolutely. Sweeney Todd is one my list for this weekend. I adore Johnny Depp and have seen just about everything he’s ever done. He is a fantastic actor, and as much fun as the “Pirates” movies are—they don’t do him justice.

If you get a chance, see if you can find two of his very best dramatic performances from a few years ago—DONNY BRASCO (w/Johnny and Al Pacina—excellent). Another, is a movie which didn’t get enough attention but his acting is fantastic—BLOW. Subject is drugs, but I guarantee you, it’s not like anything else you’ve ever seen—due to Johnny’s performance. Outstanding. Powerful. But overlooked.

    6. Cathy—I want to see BUCKET LIST too. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman—hard to go wrong.

Ooooops! Forgot to include NATIONAL TREASURE on my list! I saw it last week. A really fun ride. Funny and action-packed as usual. Totally enjoyable.

    7. I have BLOW, and loved it. I’ve been following his performances since 21 Jump Street. I just watched Secret Window yesterday on cable :-)

    8. Ah, I’ve been wondering about ATONEMENT. Okay, I think that might be the perfect movie for the Valentine’s Day evening out. :-D

    9. Marissa—Isn’t he something? Johnny Depp has such range. I’m gonna see Sweeney Todd this weekend.

    10. Diana—Definitely. What a wonderful Valentine’s Day “date” movie! Enjoy.

    11. Oh, I’d love to go to the movie theater again! I just hinted to my mom last week that Alvin and the Chipmunks was at our theater. This is a movie she has wanted to see, so I thought it might be worth a shot. No dice. So I guess I’ll wait till it’s on PPV. Mom’s boyfriend’s son got The Bucket List off of the internet already….I don’t even want to know any details about how he got it….I’m still trying to find a time to watch it. I had time last week, but she loaned it to my aunt. And I agree…Freeman and Nicholson…can’t go wrong with that combo. I also want to see the sequel to National Treasure. I’m not a Nick Cage fan, but hey, a good movie is a good movie, no matter who is in it. And NT was great. Can’t wait for the sequel.

I’m not a Johnny Depp fan, either but Secret Window was WONDERFUL! I’m so glad my brother told me to watch it.

I did get to see one new movie, though…The re-make of Halloween was finally on PPV. I wasn’t crazy about some of the changes they made, and I will NEVER look at Micky Dolenz the same way again, but over all, not a bad remake. And I’m dying (ok, bad choice of words) to see the movie The Orphanage. I hope it’s out on DVD or PPV soon. Funny, I used to have a fit when something went straight to video. Now I can’t wait for something to come out on video/DVD.

Oh, I know this movie wasn’t in theaters, but if anyone didn’t see it on TV, Hallmark’s The Russell Girl will be out on DVD soon, I believe. It was WONDERFUL! It’s the first time I’ve cried over a Hallmark movie in ages. I swear most of the movies on the Hallmark Channel are not worth of the name Hallmark. But this movie was definitely Hallmark material.
