What constitutes a love letter? Does it need to be all lovey-dovey? Poetic? Melodramatic? Or can it be simply a scribbled “I Love You” on the back of a Burger King receipt?
In the early days of my marriage, I’d often find little notes jotted on various scraps of paper throughout the house. It was the usual fare of love and mushy-gushy stuff that would make any newlywed giddy with glee.
Fast forward 17 plus years to last week. I was home alone, getting ready to go out. I opened the medicine cabinet to find a handwritten note taped to one of the shelves. Penciled in on the piece of paper:
THIS CABINET IS NOW FULL. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CRAM ADDITIONAL ITEMS HEREIN. THANK YOU!
To a stranger it might not look very romantic. But I saw the humor in the note, saw the thought he put into making me laugh first thing in the morning. The word FULL, separated from the rest of the note by being written in red marker, was a nice touch, too. It just needed the signature of THE MANAGEMENT to be the cherry on top.
Don’t get me wrong—he really doesn’t want anymore things to be stuffed into the cabinet, but to me the note was just as romantic as those in my newlywed days.
Oh, and in case you’re wondering…I wrote him back, letting him know that I thought his estimation abilities were sadly lacking. See? I can be romantic, too.

Okay. This made me well up. Big time. And if you could see my eyes right now you’d know I’m not being sarcastic.

Aw… Heather, you’re a softie!
I occasionally leave notes in my hubby’s truck. When I remember…..chuckle, chuckle.
Valentine’s Day 2006 I got a cell phone. It was red so in his mind it counted as romantic. We won’t mention that his is exactly the same and because of his plan, mine was free. No, we won’t mention THAT at all.

Okay. This made Theo barf. Big time. And if you could see Theo’s keyboard right now you’d know Theo’s not being sarcastic.

Laura, I think we both have warped senses of romance. But it works for us, right? Hugs.
Deb, LOL on the cell phones. It’s the thought! THE THOUGHT!
Theo, I love when you show your vulnerable side.

Yup, it’s the thought. I do agree. BUT…..the corsage he bought you for the freshman semi formal is prettier than a cell phone.

In deference to Theo, here’s a link to the lyrics of a song the Professor & I joke about often. It’s written & sung by one of my favorite Texas songwriters and musicians, Robert Earl Keen. Enjoy.
