    Silver Linings

The important thing is that no one was hurt.

I tried to remind myself of that as I dealt with the aftermath of the car accident that happened two days ago. You know—the phone calls, the paperwork, the estimates, having to get into my car from the passenger side, the rental car…you name it.

But no one was hurt. Thank goodness.

And it could have been much worse.

The day started off cold and snowy. Twenty degrees with gusty winds (wind chill: 2º) and light snow blanketing the Cincinnati area. Our family was headed south to Louisville, a two hour drive, so we left an hour early, expecting delays due to the weather.

Little did we know we’d become one of those delays for other travelers.

Lucky for us, traffic was slow, inching along the highway due to a broken down tractor trailer. We driving slowly (about 10 mph) in the right lane, chatting about how brilliant we were to leave early, factoring in enough time to deal with the traffic when…crash!

The Range Rover in the middle lane never saw us as he changed lanes. Whether from a blind spot or negligence, who knows? We were okay. He was okay (and miraculously completely accepted fault). However, his car was barely damaged and my Camry was a wreck. It still ran, thank goodness, but the driver’s side door was smushed in, the mirror gone (leaving behind an attractive dangling mass of wires), chunks of glass gouged from the window. An hour after the accident, the door decided it was traumatized and refused to open.

Out of all this, though, a little of my faith in humanity has been restored. From insurance agents to body shops to rental car agents—everyone has gone above and beyond what I expected in customer service.

$2300 later, my car should be fixed in a couple of weeks. Until then, I’ve been upgraded to a 2007 Accord. Oh, and for those who follow the blog, the auto body shop is trying to track down face plates for my hubcaps, so it will be like getting new hubcaps for the low cost of face plates (which we’ll pay for, not the insurance company). Silver lining!

So, in the midst of the aggravation of having to deal with the accident’s aftermath, I’m tremendously grateful. And we still made it to Louisville in time. :)

    1. Heather,
Glad you and yours are fine. My boss just came back to St. L from Maryland and said the roads in Ohio were the worst in weather for the entire trip. Kind of makes me glad we stayed home for the holidays and didn’t drive the 1600 miles back home to Idaho. I’m thinking next year I’ll fly into Seattle and see my kid in the summer! Can we just move Christmas to July?

    2. Heather,

I’m oh-so-glad you and your family are okay. That’s also very reassuring to hear how easy everyone has been to deal with. Can’t wait to see that spiffy Accord!

    5. I went through the heart stopping moment when I got the email on thursday, but I still didn’t like reading it.

Don’t get too attached to the 07, though.

      Hugs

    6. Lynn, Ohio does tend to get its share of nasty storms and bad weather. I know I despise driving near Cleveland this time of year! I’m not a fan of driving in snow. I’m already longing for summer, too!

Shelley, LOL on the car. It does have an odd smell (not bad, just…funky), so I need to hunt down a Yankee Candle air freshener. Other than that, it’s great.

    7. Deb, it was scary, that’s for sure! But when I think about how fast we’d normally travel on that road–and what would have happened if this same accident had occurred at those speeds… Shudder! We were really lucky.

      Thank you, Julie!

LOL on getting attached, Laura. I don’t think I have to worry (too much). I love my car, including all the 125,000 miles on it. And with new face plates (ooh, I hope the auto body shop can find them), it will be like getting a new car when I get it back.

    8. The driver was probably a Yankees fan.

    10. Glad you and your family are all OK.
It’s also good to hear positive things about insurance agents, body shop and car rental agencies.

    11. How scary! I know that jittery, blood-chilling feeling of being in a car accident. I’m so relieved you’re all well!

    12. Heather—I’m so glad you and your family are all right—-safe and sound. Traffic accidents are the scariest things, I think. They come out of nowhere and can be someone else’s fault, yet they involve you totally. —-shudder—-

    13. Thank goodness you were OK!! This could have been much, much worse…
