To Give or Not to Give…

    Gift cards!

There’s a whole thread here I could focus on. Who to give presents to over the holidays, who not to. How much do you spend, etc. Maybe those are blogs for another day…

Today I want to talk about gift cards, giving and receiving.

Personally, I love them. Love, love, love.

I can hear the naysayers already. Gift cards are impersonal, cold, uncaring, and scream “you don’t care enough about me to get to know what I really want.”

    Not true, I say!

Gift cards can be personal. For example, I have a friend who loves Starbucks. A Starbucks gift card will buy her a lot of coffee—and every time she has a cup she’ll think of me.

Just because the gift is easy to buy doesn’t mean there isn’t some thought behind its purchase.

Does buying gift cards as presents take away some of the joy of shopping? For me, no. I’m not a huge fan of shopping, and I tend to stress over the holidays about what to give people. Is it the right color? Size? Do they have one already? Did I already send Theo this Elvis mug? Will so-and-so actually use this item or will it become a dust collector? Things like that. Plus, I’m always careful to buy gift cards that I know the recipient will use—and like. And I usually send a smaller gift to go along with it—something more personalized (like a mug with the Starbucks card).

And with gift cards, I know for certain the recipient will get what they want. A few years ago I bought a friend a rather expensive gift that I thought was perfect for her. She didn’t like it, but kept it because I gave it to her. In hindsight, I wish I’d have given her a gift card so I wouldn’t feel like I wasted my money.

As for *getting* gift cards, I’m all for it. I’m picky. Too picky, perhaps. With a gift card, I can choose exactly what I want, or pick something I wouldn’t normally buy because of budget restraints. And I feel as though people who give the cards to me choose ones with me in mind (Panera’s, Macy’s, book stores, etc), so there is *some* thought that goes into the present.

I will confess that I won’t buy the Visa/MasterCard cards. I do like to be more personal than that. And I’ve yet to purchase practical cards (grocery, gas) for gifts.

Oh, and another plus: saving on shipping costs! Gotta love that.

I think the important thing here is to remember that gift-giving is about the spirit of the season and not the gift (or what form it comes in).

    4. Gift cards are awesome. I love getting them. And in order to not make my life crazy this holiday season, I will be buying gifts cards for most of the gifts. Good idea to include a little something small with the gift card, but as for going out and trying to guess what people want/need/don’t already have forget it. Life is sometimes very nice when it is very simple.

    5. An Elvis coffee mug? Theo hates Elvis crap, and Theo doesn’t drink coffee. Circle gets the square on that gift idea, Heather.

Gift cards are cold and impersonal. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that Heather is their champion. If you’re gonna give a gift card, you might as well give Theo the cash. Theo would respect your honesty.

    6. Last year, a friend of mine told everyone she knew that all she wanted was a gift card to Coach. It didn’t matter how little the amount because she was going to pool them all together. In the end, between the people in her office and all her friends, she got $350 in Coach gift cards…and a purse she’d NEVER have splurged on for herself. (Nor could any of us have bought it for her on our own!)

    7. I think gift cards are great. I’ve already told one of my daughters that’s the perfect thing she can get for me–a card from a certain store where I can get stuff I need after holidays. I’m with you, Heather. I’m picky. I give my kids gift ideas which they usually buy and then they buy some other little stuff they think I’ll enjoy. I don’t want people wasting lots of money on something I might not like or use.

    8. Hi Heather! I love getting gift cards. I used to hate it when I was a kid, but now I love it. Especially since I have this one relative who no matter what, never gets me the right gift. Honestly, you could tell her exactly what to get me…right down to the color (My mom actually did one year), and she will still get me the wrong thing…not even close to what my mom told her. Two years ago, I was excited because I thought she actually got it right…I even made a big deal about it and told my mom she got it right…but upon closer inspection, I noticed it was still wrong. Close, but wrong. So last year, mom told her to get me a gift card from Bath and Body Works, and she actually did! I was SO happy! My brother always gets them for me too….This year I told him to get me a Barnes and Noble gift card…I keep asking for two books and haven’t gotten them yet, so I’m hoping for a gift card so I can get them myself…and my mom wonders why I don’t tell her what I want anymore? *sigh* I also have relatives who have crawled out of the woodwork a few years ago who started sending me a gift card for a grocery store every year. I’m picky too, so gift cards are perfect for me. But a little tip…make sure you can use them online, too. One year, my brother got me one….it was only for in-store use so my mom had to buy it off of me and then I just bought what I wanted online.

    9. My son gives me a Barnes & Noble Gift every Christmas and it’s really one of the best gifts I get each year. Pamela in Kansas

    10. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who loves gift cards! IMO, they’re one of the best gifts around.

Laura K, love the story of the Coach bag!

I love book store gift cards, too! I’ve got the itch to shop now! And, well, buy for myself! LOL!

Here’s hoping everyone gets what they want!

    11. I like to give gift cards for Target for for my son’s teachers, but I wrap them inside something he made for them. Best of both worlds. I love gettin’ them - especially to book stores!

    12. Heather,

I just had to share this…mom went shopping today…she has to have eye surgery in December, so she is getting all of her Christmas stuff done early. Anyway….she got mostly gift cards for people this year. :)
