    Same Wave Length

I got to go up to the High Country again this last weekend.  I drove up to Frisco from Fort Collins Saturday morning for an afternoon booksigning.  I was really looking forward to the trip because I figured the trees would be turning in the mountains since the temps are cooler, especially at night.

I wasn’t disappointed.  It was beautiful, and it’s still early.  Swaths of aspens had turned to gold and streaked through the evergreens.  Bits of shrubbery were starting to turn orange.   I just love Fall and the Fall colors, so the drive was a treat.

The signing went splendidly, and I had the chance to meet lots of regular readers and meet new ones.  But the high point turned out to be the new friendships I made.  The shopowner had imvited me to stay over at her house that evening so I didn’t have to drive home in the dark.  She and I and a charming customer went for dinner and wound up closing the place.  Staff was standing around politely waiting for us to pause our animated conversation long enough to notice the time.

When we did, we were shocked.  Boy, time really does fly when you’re having fun—and when you’ve found lively engaging people who love exploring issues as much as you do.  We were all over the map conversationally.  And once my friend and I reached her home, we sat in her gorgeous living room (designed to highlight the art on the walls) and picked up the conversation where we left off.  And ran with it.  Before we knew it, it was past midnight.

And we picked it up again the next morning over breakfast—ranging far afield and back again.  All over the place.  What fun.  This woman has led a fascinating international life.  In fact, I encouraged her to start making tapes telling “her story.”  She should record all these memories for her family.

So my High Country weekend turned out to be even more fun than usual.  Meeting and making new friends is such a joy.  Especially when they’re on the same wave length as you are.  It’s as if you’ve known each other for years.  I’m fortunate in that I have several great friends on the same wave length (crazy as it is) that I am.

    How about you?

    1. Your trip sounds wonderful!
We just got back from a weekend in Maine and it was great. Looking out over treetops and Camden Harbor from Mt. Battie was breathtaking. I could’ve done with out the climb though!

    2. Debbie—that sounds beautiful. Daughter Melissa who lives/works in Manhattan has started taking long weekends in New England and has gone to Maine twice. She loves it. I can’t wait to visit again. It’s been ages.

    3. Maggie, sounds like a good time was had by all! I love when I can get together with friends and just talk all night long. One of the reasons I love conferences so much!

    4. I know what you mean, Heather. That’s why I’m sorry we won’t be seeing some of you Chicks at the end of October.
