    When Autumn Leaves are Falling…

    Diana Killian Icon

This morning I woke with that nervous Back To School feeling.

There’s something in the air right now, a certain early morning chill — its there in the evenings too. It’s too soon for woodsmoke, but there’s something crisp and earthy and invigorating. It’s fall. The trees are yellowing, leaves gently drifting to the lawn.

The market racks are stuffed with fat magazines proclaiming the Fall Fashions. I have no idea when the new fashions really come into play; for me, fashion and the fall are irrevocably entwined — usually following a summer of wearing nothing but jeans and t-shirts and bare feet.

Now that I’m working at home the summer fashion continues into the fall with the stylish addition of a couple of sweatshirts and some thick socks. It’s a weird feeling this…not going back to school.

I mean, I haven’t gone back to school for many, many years, but somehow the first weeks of fall still enerigzed me, made me look at the day job with new enthusiasm and ambition.

    I say that like it’s a GOOD thing, don’t I?

Anyway, I’m an autumn baby, so that’s probably part of the deal here. It’s the start of a new year for me. Fall means shopping (though not this year), and crackling fires, and falling leaves, and soups and stews, and snuggling up early with a good book or two, and hot chocolate, and college football, and planting bulbs…

What does fall mean to you? Do you have a favorite season?

    1. I can’t wait for fall, too. Though it still seems a long way off! It’s 93* here and rising. And it’s been this way for a looong time. With no relief in sight. Leaves are falling–because they’re dead! Ack. But I know fall will eventually come, and I’ll pull out the sweatshirts and heavy socks—ahhhhh.

    2. I love fall. I think I like the scents the most - the way you feel energized by just breathing in the air. There’s a food connection for me too. The pumpkin breads, the apple pies, and the soups and chili we’ll want to have on colder nights. And I can wear jeans again all the time. Ann Taylor Loft has some great fits at great prices!

    3. Fall is absolutely my favorite season. And not just because the kids go back to school. LOL

There is something in the clean, chilly air that brings me such peace it’s almost indescribable. Dorky, I know. True, nonetheless.

    4. Good heavens, Heather, you may be right. I may be mistaking the dying trees for autumn. The temp was 102 yesterday — and that’s cooler than it’s been. Maybe I’m hallucinating from the heat!

    5. Mmmm. Food and fashion and fall. The three ‘F’s. I’m with you, JB. The scents of autumn are the best: woodsmoke and that earthy damp smell — apples and cinnamon and baking bread. I used to subscribe to a wonderful magazine called Victoria. They always had the most wonderful autumn layouts.

    6. Not dorky at all, Debbie! I feel exactly the same way.

    7. I’ve got 4 kids so Fall means *yay* they’re back in school and I’ve got the computer to myself :)

    8. I always feel like this is the time to make resolutions, Indian Summer fall, when anything is possible even if not probable. January’s too cold and heartless. Fall’s magjcal. Still summer but the hint of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and snow. The good snow you ski and play in, not the bad ugly snow of January that makes walks slippery and roads unbearable. So yeah, I love fall.

    9. Too funny, Wendy! And the kids of course loooonnnnnnng for the summer!

    10. That’s it, Lynn! That’s exactly how the fall feels.

    11. I live in San Diego and our “seasonal” changes are very limited in comparison to many places in the country. But, I do love fall….at least our version of it. I bet I would love it even more someplace closer to what you’ve described. We took a trip back east one fall to Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire. Just thinking about how beautiful it was makes me wonder, why didn’t I plan a trip there this year?

    12. I love fall and especially when it’s time to carve pumpkins and this year I have a feeling Kansas will be rainy, windy and I will love it. I love sipping flavored coffee and curling up watching ‘Arsenic and Old Lace’ or reading a nice cozy mystery.
      Hugs,
      Pamela

    13. I’m like you; Fall is totally energizing — my favorite time of the year. Even though it really only starts in November here (I just planted a vegetable garden three days ago).

How’s working at home working out?

by Karen on September 7th, 2007 at 9:17 pm

    14. Hey, I love Fall, too, but we’re still having marvelous summer temps here in Colorado. Eighties. Next wekk, it drops lower for a few days. Sign of things to come. By the third week of September we should have more days in the seventies.

And then. . . . by the 4th week of Sept at the latest, I’ll step outside early in the morning and smell it. The Scent of Fall. Love it, love it. Trees in the High Country will be turning. Aspens will already be turned.

And then. . . .there’s the Elk Rut. A sure sign of Fall.

    15. And then. . . .there’s the Elk Rut. A sure sign of Fall.

Oh my. A sure sign of SOMETHING.

    16. How’s working at home working out?

It is so unbelievably wonderful. I’m putting in just as long and hard hours, but it makes all the difference in the world when it’s for your own business. Nothing is too much trouble, no nights are too long, no mornings are too early, and despite the pressure of conflicting deadlines…it feels so good!

I’m still working on perfecting my schedule though. It’s a struggle to get in the physical activity because once I get going, I really don’t want to stop!

by Diana on September 12th, 2007 at 10:08 am

    17. Oh, Pamela! You just described the dream life I want for all my readers! That’s how I always picture everyone sitting down with my books. Heck, it’s how I picture ME sitting down with a book. If only….

by Diana on September 12th, 2007 at 10:09 am

    18. Linda, I’m in southern California too, and what I think happens is we develop a keen eye for those tiny changes signaling the end of a season. I’d love to go to Maine or Vermont one year for the autumn — or even the winter. Provided I could stay in a cozy bed and breakfast and not have to shovel snow!
