    At the Movies

    Maggie Sefton Icon

As you all know (because I’ve said it so many times), I LOVE going to the movies.  It’s a great—and fast—way to refill the well as well as relax.  And I’ve just found a precious gem of a new movie, and I want to share it.

But first—-a few words are probably in order about THE blockbuster of the summer:  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.  It’s wonderful.  The director did a marvelous job (in my opinion) with blending the dark and the light in this movie.  And, it’s such fun watching that cast of characters grow up and mature right before our eyes.  It’s easier to hide it on the page, but not on the screen.  I’m amazed how much their faces have matured.  So—-if you want a magical escape some evening or weekend, indulge yourself and enjoy seeing J.K. Rowling’s latest “visual” installment in the Potter series.  You won’t regret it.

Now—-back to the precious little movie gem I discovered this weekend.  It’s a British film (why are we not surprised?).  “Becoming Jane” with Ann Hathaway and a wonderful British cast, including many stars in this splendid telling of Jane Austen’s own story.  Now, I’m not sure how much artistic license they took, since I’m not a “Regency Historical” writer or researcher, simply a lover of the genre.   I set all of my historicals in different periods.

But the story is beautifully told with wit and humor and poignancy that can only reach the screen through the efforts of excellent actors.  And the camera work is —well—luminous.  The English countryside, even the chickens and pigs.   And fuzzy sheep.  Looking exactly like the sheep I recall seeing in the English countryside.

I know, I know—-I’m waxing elogquent over the filmaker’s shots of pigs and sheep.  Can’t help it.  The movie was such a joy to experience.  But, then again—-I’m a lover of British historical flics.  And especially those set in the 19th Century.   The entire century was so fascinating.  The changes that occurred from 1800 to 1900 were amazing.

But, I digress.  So, I’d better stop now.   What good movies have you folks seen lately?

    1. I went and saw the Bourne Ultimatum and really liked it. It concluded the 2 Bourne movies that came out before it. Not much dialouge, but a lot of good fight/chase scenes!

    2. Linda, I liked the Bourne Ultimatum too. Matt Damon has really blossomed as an action star, hasn’t he?

Okay, Maggie. I admit it. I went to see Superbad and you know what? I laughed and laughed and laughed. At first I thought “Why am I here?” and “will I be the only audience member over 15?” Strangely, the place was packed with adults in my age range and we were all rolling. If you go…prepare for a variety of different terms referring to male genitalia. I heard ‘em all, folks. :)

    3. JB,
That is too funny about Superbad! And yes, Matt Damon is quite the action star. Loved his fight scenes.

    4. Hi Maggie. I just saw Premonition with Sandra Bullock and Charlotte’s Web. I’m not usually one for remakes, but the new Charlotte’s Web was good. I’m still debating whether or not to see the re-make of “Halloween”. It’s my favorite horror movie series, but like I said…I am not one for remakes. Although, this one might be interesting. I’ve seen scenes and it looks like they might go into more detail about the main character. We’ll see. I’ll have to wait till it is on PPV or DVD though.

    5. Linda—-I loved the Bourne Ultimatum. I’ve loved the entire series, and I agree—Matt Damon has done a wonderful job of portraying that characters. And, yes—-those fight scenes are fascinating.

    6. Boy, JB, I’m glad you admitted Superbad. Now, I can admit Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in the Rush Hour sereies. Yep, I went to see the last one and laughed and laughed. But still, the first two were better. But those two pros work so well together, they know how to please the crowd. Plus, I love the movie trailers. Jackie Chan always has a hilarious trailer after each movie showing all the “outtakes.: Too funny.

    7. Traci—-I loved the new Charlotte’s web as muvch as I loved the first one. So, sweet and the animal characters were fantastic. Premonition was interesting to watch but I was disappointed in the ending. Bujt that’s just me.

Ohhhhh, no……..not Freddy Kruger Halloween! Yikes!!! There’s NO way I could see one of those movies. I’d have nightmares for a week.

    8. Okay, I really need to get out more! I haven’t seen a movie in forever, though I think “Balls of Fury” is in my family’s future.

I want to see “Becoming Jane” with my daughter–we just listened to Sense and Sensibility and it would be a great tie-in. Besides, we’re both Anne Hathaway fans.

    9. I’m usually a lurker, but if you haven’t see it yet: I just finally got around to Stranger than Fiction. That movie was incredible, and I am NOT a Will Ferrell fan. It was so amazingly well-written.

by LauraP on August 31st, 2007 at 9:23 am

    10. Laura P, I like Stranger than Fiction too and I’m not a Will Ferrell fan either. I really like the Maggie Gyllenhaal character.

by Linda on August 31st, 2007 at 5:34 pm

    11. Maggi–The only thing I didn’t like about the new Charlotte’s Web was watching Charlotte talk. I just thought it was creepy how her mouth moved. I know, I’m strange. :)

Premonition, yeah…I kept thinking it would end differently….when it got to the end I was really shocked! I think my jaw actually hit the floor. I guess that was the point of having that ending, but I just didn’t care for that at all. Oh, and you’re getting your horror movies a bit mixed up. Michael Meyers is from Halloween. Freddie is Nightmare on Elm Street. Halloween is the only horror movie series I can watch. Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th scare me to death. Halloween does to a point, but not as much as the others. I don’t care what they say….no matter how many times you tell yourself “It’s only a movie.” when you are watching alone, it doesn’t help.

    12. Laura & Linda—I really liked Stranger than Fiction, too. Will Farrell showed a new side. And that Maggie character was great, wasn’t she?

by Maggie on September 1st, 2007 at 6:01 pm

    13. Whoa, Traci—I can’t watch any of those horror movies—Freddie or Halloween or Creepy Things That Crawl from the Sewer or Sky or Whatever. shiver, shiver.

by Maggie on September 1st, 2007 at 6:02 pm

    14. Maggie, I can relate. Horror books and movies never used to bother me, but my brother and I stayed up late one night to watch a movie called “Blackula” when I was a teenager. It’s the only movie my brother, a.k.a. Mr. Macho, will admit scared him to death. Anyway, ever since then, I can’t handle scary stuff like I used to. I still love them, mind you…I just have more trouble watching them.
