And now for something completely different…

    Diana Killian Icon

Diana Killian IconMy latest obsession is a 1970s British crime series called THE PROFESSIONALS. Fifty-seven digitally re-mastered episodes–that I haven’t stopped watching since I bought them from Amazon.uk a month ago. First I watched them on my laptop. Then I bought a cheap region-free DVD player and now I’m watching them in my office. When I should be writing.

I always write with old movies or DVDs playing in the background, but I find THE PROFESSIONALS way too distracting. I actually watch it. A lot.

    The Professionals - Series 1 To 4

It’s a long time since I’ve enjoyed dumb TV this much — and this show most definitely has its classic DUMB moments. Like the episode I’m watching now: “Wild Justice.” Enough plot holes to throw a motorcycle through, regular characters behaving out-of-character–you name it. But you’ll notice that I am watching it all the same.

It helps that they male leads in this show are … riveting. Good looking, yes, but not in the usual Hollywood way. And what a great chemistry they have.

    Fun, fun, fun.

Do you have entertainment obsessions? Do you fall in love with certain TV shows or CDs or DVDs and find you are … glutting yourself on them? Is it just me? And if it is just me, can you at least admit to loving one dumb TV show with all your heart?

    1. I can’t admit to just one; I have several. The A-Team, Charlie’s Angels, Simon & Simon… I just can’t get enough of them. Thank God for TV on DVD.

    2. I don’t know if I would call Law & Order a dumb TV show, but whenever I am overly stressed or depressed no one can cheer me up like Lenny Briscoe.

by Annette on June 6th, 2007 at 9:44 am

    3. Way too many to list, I fear. And a lot of them are Brit shows. They do come up with some strange-but-compelling programs, don’t they? :)

    4. I think I can admit this here. I was a huge fan of Party of Five when it was on. Thought the acting–across the board–on that show was incredible. Have no idea if it’s on DVD yet, though. If it is, I just may have to invest in those.

    5. Okay, Heather, I admit to loving CHARLIE’S ANGELS. I know this is a shocking admission for a feminist…but I love that show. And who says being beautiful and using sex as a weapon isn’t feminism in action?

    6. Annette, L&O has had it’s dumb episodes, but…yeah, you probably don’t get pink-cheeked when you admit to watching it.

by Diana on June 6th, 2007 at 5:08 pm

    7. Hey, Tori, it’s not all Masterpiece Theatre, eh? And thank goodness for that. I also confess to loving THE NEW AVENGERS. Even more than THE old AVENGERS — which is a sure sign that I have dreadful taste in telly.

by Diana on June 6th, 2007 at 5:09 pm

    8. Hey, Laura, almost everything seems to be on DVD EXCEPT the second season of MACMILLAN AND WIFE. Why the second season has been so slighted, I cannot understand. COME ON, UNIVERSAL!! GET WITH THE PLAN!!

by Diana on June 6th, 2007 at 5:10 pm

    9. I can’t really get into many new shows this season, but The Chiller Channel has me hooked on American Gothic again. Also WE is showing re-runs of Kate and Allie right now. I love that show and am even giving up AFV on WGN to watch it. And I NEVER miss AFV even in re-runs. I also love old re-runs of Dark Shadows and Quantum Leap. And if they would bring back Beyond Belief, I’d be one happy camper. As for silly shows, I can’t believe I’m admitting to this, but I love Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel. I really don’t have a show that I get mad if I miss it since there is always re-runs, but do NOT bother me during the movies “The Sound of Music”, “Eddie and the Cruisers” “Dead Poets Society, “Awakenings” or any Planet of the Apes movies. :)

    10. Ohhhhh, I remember Dark Shadows, Traci! Wow, talk about a blast from the past. Those were the days when Star Trek first premiered and I was ecstatic because I LOVED outer space movies and stories. Little did any of us know how wildly popular that series would become—and how it led to a life outside itself, with movies, and giving birth to several excellent spinoff series. The Next Generation was my favorite. Even though Deep Space Nine had great characters. And, of course, I loved Capt. Janeway as the female starship captain. Don’t get me started on the space stuff.

Has anyone caught Bill Shatner having the time of his life playing an-over-the-top lawyer in Boston Legal? He’s hilarious.

    11. Favorite TV obsessions: GILLIGAN’S ISLAND, GET SMART, THE MUNSTERS, ALIAS SMITH & JONES and WKRP IN CINCINNATI.

by Diana Celesky on June 7th, 2007 at 9:36 am

    12. Oh wow, Traci, lots of good ones there! What the heck is the Thriller Channel, I wonder? I always seem to fall in love with shows that get canceled almost immediately! There was one with Rock Hudson and Jack Scalia, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and a host of others. I guess it’s not a healthy sign for a show’s future if I love it!

by Diana on June 7th, 2007 at 11:18 am

    13. Maggie, I don’t know why I never got into Dark Shadows as a kid. All my friends loved it. I think I was easily spooked. I actually found the old Dracula movies scary.

by Diana on June 7th, 2007 at 11:40 am

    14. Diana, Alias Smith and Jones was one of my all time favorite shows! I loved that–and LANCER. Oh, and HIGH CHAPPARREL. I seem to have had quite a thing for cowboys, now that I think about it.

by Diana on June 7th, 2007 at 11:43 am

    15. BBC’s Pride and Prejudice. I watch it every year and whenever it’s on TV. No one can get my attention like Mr. Darcy!

by JB on June 7th, 2007 at 1:34 pm

    16. Oh, JB, nice one! But Austen cannot qualify as dumb TV. Not even if you eat ice cream and popcorn during it. Okay, maybe if you do your toenails while you’re watching.

by Diana on June 7th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

    17. Diana,

The Chiller Channel is fairly new…if you have Directv, it’s Channel 257. Lots of great stuff on there. Unfortunately, Night Gallery is on it really early in the morning, and I keep forgetting to tape it.

      Maggie,

The best part about watching Dark Shadows (for me anyway) is the bloopers when it was live. They were hysterical!

      Traci

by Traci on June 7th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

    18. I fall in love with shows I obsess over. But now I can no longer watch them with my youngest daughter who turned 21. She moved out. She got me addicted on Desparate Housewives. I on the other hand love Brothers & Sisters (so true). I have always loved Cold Case, Without a Trace but now find myself adding Close to Home and Numbers.
I used to be addicted to Gilimore Girls but cannot get it in my rural area so will have to buy the DVDs to watch it where we left off.
This was something I enjoyed so much with my daughter.

by Jane Squires on June 7th, 2007 at 8:34 pm

    19. Oh! Oh! The BBC version of Pride and Prejudice! Ohhhhhh, that is the BEST version ever! Ever, ever! (Do you detect a note of fantaticism here?) Ohhh, Colin Firth’s Darcy—oh-my-Gawd. Talk about “be still my beating heart.” Okay. . .I’ll stop now.

by Maggie on June 8th, 2007 at 11:20 am

    20. Hey, Traci, you’re right! I do get the Chiller Channel. I’ll have to see what’s playing…

by Diana on June 8th, 2007 at 11:38 am

    21. Jane, I know. I am truly obsessive about the things I love. Last night I was actually dreaming about The Professionals.

That’s so lovely that you’ve shared those cozy TV Times with your daughter. Wonderful memories there for both of you.

by Diana on June 8th, 2007 at 11:41 am

    22. So, Maggie, tell us what you REALLY think about Colin Firth?
